Wenger close to signing new deal

Wenger close to signing new deal

Wenger has been linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid

Arsenal are confident manager Arsene Wenger will commit himself to the Premier League club by early September.
Wenger is out of contract at the end of the season and reports suggest he has delayed signing a new deal following the exit of vice-chairman David Dein.
But the Gunners remain optimistic the Frenchman, 57, will stay at the club.
"It should happen within the next two to three weeks," said BBC sports editor Mihir Bose. "Wenger has the option of signing a two- or three-year deal."
Wenger, who has been with the London club for 11 years, hinted earlier this month that his protracted negotiations would soon reach a favourable conclusion.

"We're talking and usually when we talk, there's always a positive outcome," he said.
"I'm highly committed to the club. I have shown that many, many times in my life and I don't think anybody can question that."
Wenger's future has been the subject of much speculation following the departure of Dein in April.
The former Monaco boss enjoyed a close working relationship with Dein, who was responsible for bringing him to England.
When Dein left after falling out with the rest of the board of directors over a possible takeover of the club, Wenger was immediately linked with other clubs, notably Real Madrid.
But it appears as though Wenger will remain with the club he has led to three Premiership titles and four FA Cup trophies.

Wenger banks on Arsenal potential

Wenger banks on Arsenal potential

Arsène Wenger has vowed to turn Arsenal’s potential into silverware after agreeing a new three-year deal to remain in charge at the Emirates Stadium.
The deal will keep Wenger at the club until 2011 and he is understood to be earning about £4 million a season. However, for the Frenchman, the issues have never been about money, either for himself or team building.
“I have been entrusted with complete freedom to implement and execute my plans on what will make the team successful,” Wenger, who has won three league titles, four FA Cups and reached the final of the Champions League last year, said.
“I have a responsibility to the fans to deliver silverware and also a responsibility to the players to help turn our potential into prizes. I want to achieve the maximum with this team and it is young and very ambitious, and I feel I share that ambition with my team.
“That is one of the reasons that I wanted to get a taste of how hungry this team is first before I definitely go for it. I love the job I have at Arsenal. I love to win and I feel I can win with Arsenal. My heart is tied to this football club. Arsenal is the club of my life.
“I feel I share the ambition with everybody to make Arsenal the best club in the world and that everybody works to be successful in that.
“The first season was difficult at the Emirates, but from January onwards we felt really at home. Now you can see that there is no adaptation problem any more. I feel that we can push this club even higher now.”
Wenger has faith that his latest crop of players can eclipse the achievements of the past 11 seasons. “Yes, they have the ability,” he said. “Don’t forget this squad has been in the Champions League final without losing a game.
“The first signs this season are that the team has really matured. There is a completely different attitude towards the competition. They are more responsible, more disciplined, and that can bring success.”

Wenger ready to see out career at Arsenal

Wenger ready to see out career at Arsenal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he could finish his managerial career at the Emirates stadium.
Wenger's commitment to Arsenal's cause remains unquestionable after he signed a contract extension worth £4.5million a year that will keep him at the club until 2011.
The deal puts him on the same pay scale as Sir Alex Ferguson and there were suggestions yesterday that he will outstay the Manchester United manager.
"I'm at a stage of my career now where I don't want to be associated with anyone else," said Wenger.
"It's like a marriage. I met this club at the right moment of my life and although I had difficult times at the start, the club was always behind me.
"The first time I realised the level of support for the club was when we were at Wembley in the Champions League in the Nineties and it was a sell-out.
"I realised then that the club was bigger than Highbury."

Wenger Wedded To Arsenal
The best news Arsenal fans, players and board could possibly have had heading into Saturday's North London derby against Spurs was the announcement that manager Arsene Wenger had committed himself to the club for three more years after the end of this season. And Le Boss has made it clear Arsenal is not just his life - it's almost like his wife...

Sore loser Wenger driven to put Arsenal back on top

Written by: AFP

Arsene Wenger, seen here in August 2007, has revealed his desire to avoid the bitter taste of defeat is driving him to restore Arsenal to the peak of English football.

LONDON (AFP) - Arsene Wenger has revealed his desire to avoid the bitter taste of defeat is driving him to restore Arsenal to the peak of English football.

Arsenal have gone two years without a trophy but Wenger signed a new three-year contract with the Premier League club last week because he believes his young side is close to fulfilling their potential.

The Gunners' barren spell has been especially hard for the French coach to stomach because his calm exterior hides a burning passion for success.

"Somebody said 'every victory slides over you, and every defeat stays overnight with you'," Wenger said. "You find it is easy to live with what you have won, but much more difficult to live with what you have lost and not won.

"I read somewhere that I take defeat in a difficult way, but how else can you take it?

"I am never in good health after losing a game. Your emotions are linked with your health, of course.

"You should not be in this job unless it really hurts you to lose a match. If it does not hurt you then you will not survive in this job - and the players are the same."

Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season has ensured the long-lasting ache that accompanies each defeat for Wenger has been subdued for now.

In contrast, Tottenham manager Martin Jol has suffered a miserable campaign and Saturday's visit to White Hart Lane offers Arsenal a chance to inflict more misery on their struggling local rivals.

Victory at Spurs would add further strength to Wenger's belief that Arsenal will be serious contenders for the title.

He is convinced the Premier League is so competitive that no team will run away with it, giving Arsenal the chance to make their move.

"We were not in the race for the last two years so it is already more interesting now," Wenger said.

"When teams like Aston Villa can beat Chelsea or Reading can go and draw at Man United, that shows how exciting it can be.

"It does look to me that Liverpool will be there and I think Arsenal will also be there, but Chelsea and Manchester United will come back and it will be an interesting race."

Arsenal boss Wenger: We need football director appointed

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger intends to name a new football director next May.

"At the moment, Ken Friar is doing the job David Dein did with me before," said Wenger.

"But we still need somebody. We have developed so many academies and need somebody to supervise them. Currently we are not able to do it well."

Wenger: Arsenal players benefitting from Henry sale

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Thierry Henry's sale to Barcelona has brought the best out of his young players.

"Thierry has a great goalscoring record - he could turn up on his day and destroy someone like Inter Milan," said the Arsenal manager.

"That is the challenge we have in front of us."

Wenger continued: "Thierry was a star and the focus was more on him, now things are shared out more evenly.

"We have a lot of players who can change the game.

"This team is blossoming. I am not saying we will not miss a world-class player like Thierry - but we are trying to find a way to get round that and still be efficient."

Wenger: Owners not a concern

Wenger: Focused on the team

Arsene Wenger has promised to keep Arsenal's owners happy, regardless of whom they are.

The reaction comes after Red and White Holdings Limited, an investment vehicle co-owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, increased their stake in the club to 23 per cent.

Usmanov's holding is now just 7 per cent short of reaching a figure where he would be required to make an offer for the remaining shares.
However, Wenger is only concerning himself with matters on the pitch.

The Gunners are currently riding high at the top of the Premier League and the Arsenal boss is looking to keep whoever owns the club happy with their investment.
"Whatever happens at that level doesn't concern us all," Wenger said on Sky Sports News.
"We have a big responsibility to keep people who own the club happy, no matter who it is."

New Invicibles?

Wenger sets his sights on emulating Arsenal's invincibles

BUCHAREST (AFP) - Arsene Wenger has challenged in-form Arsenal to emulate the club's historic 'invincibles' by going on an epic unbeaten run.

Wenger knows what it takes to achieve perfection in football after building the famous team that went 49 league matches without losing.

The French coach believes his side's hard-fought 1-0 win at Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League on Tuesday is proof that the Gunners' current crop have what it takes to follow in the footsteps of the 2003-04 vintage.

Arsenal are unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions and Robin van Persie's late goal in Romania clinched a ninth consecutive victory.

Wenger has been adamant that the Premier League leaders can roll their sleeves up and grind out a win just as easily as they produce the eye-catching moves that makes them the most attractive side in Europe.

And the way they emerged unscathed from an exacting Group H examination against Steaua underlined that point.

Now Wenger is convinced something special is taking shape at the Emirates Stadium.

"It says something about the focus of the team," he said. "Even though it was not the most glamorous of games, we had good focus and good team display. Overall the team is hungry.

"That is now our challenge, how long can we extend this run?

How can we try to be inspired by that kind of consistency, but it is too early to compare a run like we did before.

"In 49 and nine, there is 40 games difference. Let's go step by step and try to win the next game, which is Sunderland at home."

After so many dazzling exhibitions of the beautiful game from Arsenal in the first weeks of the campaign, this was an example of winning ugly.

Steaua proved a tougher nut to crack than expected, but Wenger's team refused to give in and got their rewards eventually.

Arsenal have often gone missing in action when they travel to Eastern Europe, with Wenger admitting his team sometimes find it hard to get motivated for these less glamorous assignments.

That looked to be the case again in the early stages.

When Romeo Surdu whipped in a cross from the left, Valentin Badea should have done better than nod tamely over from bar. Then, in the seventh minute, Surdu had the ball in Manuel Almunia's net, only to see his header ruled out for offside.

Steaua, who had never lost at home to English opposition, nearly fell behind when goalkeeper Robinson Zapata almost carried Gael Clichy's deflected cross over his own goal-line.

It took an alert clearance from Arsenal's Kolo Toure to deny Nicolae Dica after his lob looped over Manuel Almunia midway through the second half.

Steaua should have taken the lead in the 71st minute. Victoras Iacob beat Arsenal's hesitent offside trap and bore down on Almunia, only to drag his shot woefully wide.

That miss proved decisive. Wenger's side finally pieced together an incisive attack in the 76th minute and made it count in ruthless style.

Adebayor's cross from left side of the penalty area cut out four Steaua defenders and reached van Persie, who drove a perfect shot high past Zapata.

It was van the Dutch forward's second winner in four days after his strike sealed the points at West Ham on Saturday.

The patient way Arsenal tried to wear down the Romanians pleased Wenger almost as much as the result.

Where they would often become frustrated if the game didn't go their way a year ago, now there is a new maturity to the likes of van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor.

"Patience is linked with maturity and we were conscious of that at half-time," Wenger said.

"We felt superior and we were but as long as you do not score you must not become too nervous or impatient, and therefore open to the counter attack.

"We kept going, were intelligent and in the end scored the goal which gave us a deserved win."

Wenger sets his sights on emulating Arsenal's invincibles - Yahoo! News

so can we do it again or not...............I think we can still do it again.....but I'm not going to get carried away with this run.......I think it's best to focus on winning the next game

Our next one is against Bolton at home, which we should win.

Then there's Liverpool away and Manure. If we get away without a defeat in these two games, I will be very confident about our title challenge.

Arsenal boss Wenger proud of his France internationals

Arsenal's William Gallas, Lassana Diarra, Bacary Sagna, Mathieu Flamini and Abou Diaby have all be called up for the France's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

And manager Arsene Wenger has spoken of his pride at the number of Arsenal players that are getting the nod to represent their country.

"I am proud to provide Les Bleus with so many players," he added.

"There are five at Clairefontaine (France's training camp) and it could have been six if Gael Clichy didn't have two players like Eric Abidal and Patrice Evra in his position."

Arsenal boss Wenger ends Domenech feud

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger appears to have calmed his feud with France coach Raymond Domenech.

The Gunners manager has openly admitted his frustration with Domenech's decision making.

Wenger's annoyance centralises around his belief that in the past some of his players were not fit enough to play the full 90 minutes in some internationals, specifically in friendly games.

"I repeat, I am absolutely not an opponent of the French team," he told L'Equipe.

"My reactions have always been linked to the misunderstandings during friendlies, where we could give some rest to the internationals who play most often for their clubs.

"To prove my commitment to Les Bleus I am keen to accept for a decisive qualification match an Arsenal player, who is slightly injured, can play.

"My relationship with the French boss so far? There is no need to make a great fuss about it anymore.

"Everyone will benefit if things are going smoothly between Arsenal and the French national team."

Wenger insists English rules at Arsenal

Wenger insists English rules at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has refuted allegations that English is not the common language in the Arsenal dressing room.

Ashley Cole's wife Cheryl Tweedy said her husband left Arsenal as English was no longer the native tongue in the dressing room, claiming he felt like 'an outsider'.

Wenger has just two Englishmen, Theo Walcott and Justin Hoyte, in his first-team squad - but he has refuted suggestions that English is not the common language.

"The common language is English but you cannot stop six or seven players speaking French if they are French - sometimes detrimentally to a player who is English," said Wenger.

"But I cannot stop that as I have not found any player who can express themselves better in any language but English if it is not their own. It is difficult to fight against that.

"We pay the teachers (when players arrive at the club). If I speak to the group it is in English."

And Wenger says he has sympathy for players who struggle to speak the language within a dressing room, having experienced a similar problem when in Japan with Grampus Eight.

"Don't forget I was in Japan where I understood nothing," said Wenger. "You sit there, and I know what it is not to understand what people speak about. It is good not to be paranoid!"

Arsenal boss Wenger "addicted to statistics"

Arsene Wenger has revealed to the Timesthat he is "addicted to statistics" and uses technical data to back up his instincts when signing players.

Wenger was speaking in his role as an ambassador for Castrol, a sponsor for Euro 2008, which is developing the Castrol Performance Index, a system for analysing team and player performance, based on real-time data from the new Uefa Tracking System.

"The game is played by 11 players and you have only two eyes to observe everything on the pitch," Wenger said. "The more concrete data you can have, the happier you are in terms of making the right judgment. Sometimes you are guided too much by the result and can misjudge performances. Data like this helps rate players who maybe you have neglected too much and helps everyone take a more objective view."

That will include fans, who will be able to view the real-time statistics online at castrolindex.com while watching matches next summer, as well as managers looking for potential signings.

"I'm addicted to these kind of statistics," Wenger said. "You can assess strengths and weaknesses - how many passes a player makes, how many sprints, how many interceptions, assists. I'm conscious that if I am wrong when bringing in a player, no matter how good my work is afterwards, I will stay wrong. If a train starts on the wrong track, it cannot get to the right station."

Arsenal boss Wenger explains Lehmann axe

Arsenal's Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been left out of their squad to face Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has decided to stick with Spaniard Manuel Almunia as his number one and has not even named the German as his substitute goalkeeper.

"Almunia will play and I have decided to stick with the same team and keep the continuity going," Wenger said at his pre-match news conference on Friday.

"In my opinion we have three world class keepers and only one of them can play. I have got 25 players in the squad and they all expect to play."

"The player (Lehmann) is disappointed but there is a lot of competition for places. He is an intelligent guy and knows what he has to do," added Wenger.

"Jens is a world class keeper but I had to make the choice for the continuity of the side."

Lehmann was expected to return after recovering from Achilles and elbow injuries, having played for Germany against Ireland in a Euro 2008 qualifier last week.

Togo’s Woe Is Wenger’s Relief

Quote:
Togo’s Woe Is Wenger’s Relief

Arsene Wenger admitted he was caught between differing emotions when news filtered through that Togo had failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.

The Gunners boss had been preparing the likes of Nicolas Bendtner as cover for Emmanuel Adebayor’s expected six weeks of absence to represent his country in the Cup.

However, with Togo’s defeat to Mali in their final qualifying game, Wenger will now have the uninterrupted services of his main striker at his disposal during January, a fact that the Frenchman revealed bought both sympathy and relief,

"It's an exaggeration [to say I celebrated when Togo lost] but I didn't cry as well," said the Arsenal manager.

"You are a little bit caught in two, you know it will be a disappointment for the player but as well you don't cry because you know at least you have your main striker.

"But you never know, Adebayor may be injured during all of that period. But if you ask, of course the preference is that he stays at home."

Wenger will still be without Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue after the Ivory Coast booked their place in the Finals. As far as Arsenal's title rivals are concerned, some will be affected more than others.

"When you look at who is going to be out, Chelsea are going to lose four to five players but Manchester United aren't going to lose anyone," said Wenger.

The African Cup of Nations will take place from January 20 to February 10. Toure and Eboue could miss as many as 10 Arsenal fixtures, depending on how early they join up with their national squad, how far Ivory Coast advance in Ghana and how well the Gunners fare in domestic cup competitions.

Lehmann warns Arsenal boss Wenger

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has warned coach Arsene Wenger not to "humiliate" him by continuing to omit him from the Gunners line-up.

The 37-year-old has not played for the north London outfit since making a mistake against Blackburn on August 19, and vented his anger in an interview with German pay-tv station Premiere, which will be aired during Tuesday night's Champions League programme.

"It could be that at some point I feel like commenting on the whole issue," he said.

"But right at the moment I just accept everything as part of the humiliation. You have to let it happen.

"But I think - and this is directed towards my dear coach - that you should not humiliate players for too long. I am an Arsenal player and I will not just fade away quietly. "I am convinced I will soon be playing again. (Manuel) Almunia hasn't shown that he can win us matches just yet. I have been through this situation once and know how the other keeper is situated mentally. I can't imagine he will handle this.

"Wenger has spoken of three world-class goalies. I guess I must be one of them. The others have proven their class by winning titles? I'm just thinking about it, and I can't recall any. But yet today they are considered world class."

Wenger: I've never considered leaving Arsenal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he's never considered his future at the club, despite interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past.

Wenger said: "I've never thought seriously about leaving though I don't know if the board ever thought to dismiss me. I do my job as best I can.

"I am still here because I have built a new team and I want to see what I can achieve with them. I have had opportunities to leave but I've decided to stay because I think I have the best job."

Wenger has an enforced break from his usual routine when most of his players go on international duty after playing at Reading on Monday, but he said: "I'm always busy doing the work I cannot do when we play, like paperwork and contracts. I'll be watching games every night. There is always football.

"I am quite lost on holiday but the holiday period is the transfer period. I can sit on the beach with my phone. I have met players at the beach before."

Arsenal boss Wenger: My holidays are dominated by transfer talks

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits even on holiday he's busy working on transfer deals.

Wenger, 58, said: "I'm a marathon runner - I don't need a rest.

"Whenever I go on holiday I'm quite lost but luckily there is always some work for me to do.

"Even on the beach I'll be on my phone arranging transfers, chatting to contacts or making plans for the coming season.

"It's the way I am, so even though my team does not play next week, I'll be working every day."

The pencil-thin Wenger keeps himself in physical shape with daily gym visits and regular runs around Arsenal's Colney training ground.

But he admits staying in peak mental condition is more of a problem.

He said: "You try to regulate the constant stress but I've no idea how much damage it's doing to me."

Arsenal boss Wenger: Lehmann staying

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has no plans of allowing goalkeeper Jens Lehmann to leave in January.

"He is working very hard, he is super-professional and we have no intention to split with him," Wenger said.

"He is working very hard to get his place back."
