Australia, Japan on verge of making Olympics

Australia, Japan on verge of making Olympics

Written by: AFP

Australian team celebrate their victory in the Olympic qualifying football match against Iraq, in Gosford, north of Sydney, on 17 November. Australia won 2-0.
SINGAPORE (AFP) - Australia and Japan are on the verge of qualifying for next year's Beijing Olympics alongside hosts China, with South Korea and Bahrain set to battle it out for the final berth.

Australia beat Iraq 2-0 in Gosford on Saturday after goals by Adrian Leijer and Mark Milligan, leaving them needing only a point from their final clash with North Korea in Pyongyang on Wednesday to confirm their place.

Australia's men have never missed an Olympics since football was opened to professionals in 1988, but this will be the first time they have qualified through Asia.

Iraq could still qualify if Australia lose and they beat Lebanon.

Japan also took a giant stride towards Beijing with a 4-0 hammering of Vietnam in Hanoi, courtesy of a brace by Tadanari Lee, a Keisuke Honda penalty and Hajime Hosogai's second-half header.

It leaves them on 10 points in Group C, followed by Saudi Arabia on eight and Qatar on seven.

The Saudis beat Qatar 2-1 on Saturday to hand them a lifeline but it will be a tough task winning their crunch match against the Japanese at the National Stadium in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Group B is a tighter affair after South Korea only scratched out a goalless draw with Uzbekistan in Tashkent. But their cause was helped by Bahrain also playing out a scoreless draw at home to Syria.

It leaves the Koreans on 11 points to Bahrain's 10, with the decider between the two teams at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Wednesday.

That was a pretty good game there, I saw it! Australia played great, Iraq played dirty-ish!
