Hong Kong's South China impressed Fulham boss Sanchez
tribalfooball.com - July 29, 2007

Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez was full of praise for South China's efforts during the Asia Trophy tournament in Hong Kong. The Cottagers clinched third place on Friday after comfortably seeing off Hong Kong FA Cup holders South China 4-1 but Sanchez hailed their resilient opponents.
Flavio Barros Souza followed up skipper Li Haiqiang's sparkling free-kick in the 3-1 loss to Liverpool with a fine volley.
"I thought they scored two excellent goals," said Sanchez.
"They scored the two best goals in the tournament and although we were asleep for their goal, it was a fantastic delivery and a very good finish.
"Obviously the one against Liverpool on Tuesday night was excellent as well so they may have come fourth but they have scored the two best goals."

Aussie defender Ryan McGowan saw the final ten minutes of action for Hearts in yesterday's friendly defeat to Barcelona. McGowan, an Adelaide native, was rewarded for outstanding preseason form with a second-half cameo for the Jambos in front of almost 58,000 fans.
"It was just fantastic to be involved," the youngster told tribalfootball.com. "The coaching staff here have been pleased with the way I've been going and to get a chance tonight was incredible.
"It's a fantastic buzz to make a senior debut at home for Hearts ... and against Barcelona!"

Asian Cup 2011 to be held mid-European season
tribalfooball.com - July 29, 2007

The Asian Football Confederation have announced that the 2011 Asian Cup will be held in Qatar. AFC president Mohamed Bin Hammam confirmed the event would be played in the Gulf state following the organisation's executive committee meeting in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, the venue for this year's Asian Cup final.
Qatar were the sole bidders for the event following the withdrawal of India's bid and the Iran Football Federation's failure to submit the official documents.
"Because of the high standards and criteria we are applying for any tournament, it is not possible for every country to host the AFC Asian Cup," said Hammam.
"From tournament to tournament, the standards will continue to get higher and higher and it is up to the host country to ensure that all measures are in place to host a successful event.
"We need to organise our tournaments in the best environment and we have to ensure that the teams have the best facilities available and that there is good access for fans to come and watch the games.
"These are the sorts of things that a host country must provide."
With the tournament going to Qatar, the AFC president also admitted that Australia had been interested in applying to host the 2011 event.
"Australia were very interested in submitting a bid but, due to the rotation of the event, it was decided that the candidates for the 2011 competition would be restricted to the South, Central and West Asian regions," he said.
After announcing the decision, Hammam revealed that the tournament is likely to take place in January due to concerns about the weather in the Middle East during the summer months.
As a Qatari himself, Hammam was naturally delighted with the decision.
"Qatar is my home and maybe this will give me a reason to spend more of my time there," he said.
"Hopefully it will be a successful tournament."

The Dutchman has been in the post for a year and announced his decision after his team’s victory over Japan in the third/fourth play-off final in Indonesia.

"I have decided to resign," Verbeek told reporters. "I have asked the KFA before today's match to terminate my contract which was for 2008 and they agreed with that."

"It's time for a new challenge," he added.

Korea’s Asian Cup preparations were hit by injuries to key players and the team has struggled in front of goal, finding the back of the net just three times in six games.

"Before the tournament we had a target to win the Asian Cup title but we were very disappointed to lose our best players due to injury and the situation was really bad for us.

"But I have to be fair; we didn't score enough goals in the tournament despite that we had a good defence. However in such big tournaments you have to score goals in order to win.

"In general, we had great moments here in the Asian Cup and I will not forget this tournament," he said. "It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it."

There is speculation that Iraqi coach Jorvan Vieira could be Korea's next choice.
I hope Hong Myung Bo becomes our coach.

Yeah I know why. Kim Nam Il, Park Ji Sung and Lee Young Pyo, all injured. Ahn Jung Hwan is well into his thirties so Verbeek chose Dong Guk over him.

al ahly lost against a l taragy in the 4th round of the champions league

ya im saddened to say that al ahly lost but from a really lucky ball they dominated the 1st half without doin any danger on the goalie

untill al taragy scored a goal from a long ball from way behind

i dont noe how the defenders left the guy do that its really unfair to all ahly fans but yet if al hilal tie or lose its goin to be abig chance for alahly to qualify

I know Chinese football has only really "been around" for 10 or so years now, well most of the big clubs, and with a giant population there, I would think there is a worrying lack of decent Chinese players? Zheng Zhi and Dong Fangzhou would seem to be the only two "big" names along with others like Sun Jihai (Spelling error probably) and the fact that very few Chinese players play in the big money leagues, is surprising considering there population and money.

Anyone else think this, and like me, do you think it will just take time and investment?

Asian Cup champions Iraq eye Olsen as coach
BANGKOK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Asian Cup champions Iraq are considering Norwegian Egil Olsen as national team coach but have not given up hope former boss Jorvan Vieira will return to the post, the country's soccer chief said on Monday.

Iraqi Football Federation President Hussein Saeed told Reuters that former Norway coach Olsen previously turned down the job but had recently expressed interest in leading Iraq to the 2010 World Cup finals.
However, Hussein said he was hopeful that Brazilian Vieira, who quit after steering the unfancied Iraqis to a fairytale Asian Cup victory in July, would reconsider his decision to quit.

"Right now, we have made no decision," he said by telephone from Amman.
"Mr Olsen has said he is interested in the position but we intend to speak to Jorvan Vieira again also."

Vieira has been linked with a number of national and club positions but has yet to find a job since he quit Iraq, complaining of chronic disorganisation in the war-ravaged country's soccer federation.
Despite pleas to reconsider from fans and even Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the 54-year-old has repeatedly ruled out a return.
Olsen led Norway to the World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998, taking them to number two in the FIFA rankings at one point.

The 65-year-old had an unsuccessful stint in England as boss of Wimbledon in 1999 but was sacked before the club were relegated.
Vieira has coached 26 clubs and five national teams and was assistant coach of Morocco when they finished top of their group ahead of England, Portugal and Poland in the 1986 World Cup.
Iraq are keen to have a new coach installed ahead of their opening World Cup qualifier, away to Pakistan on Oct 8.

John Duerden reports from Seoul - Seongnam Stutter Then Slump As Suwon Soar

Things change quickly in football and the K-League is no exception. August 8 saw the first day of action after the mid-summer break. It also witnessed champions Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma defeat Jeju United 2-0 to stretch their unbeaten league run to 22 games.

On the same evening, closest challengers Suwon Samsung Bluewings crashed to a surprise home defeat at the hands of Asian Champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to leave Seongnam a massive nine points clear at the top.

If it wasn't for the fact that the top six teams qualify for the end-of-season championship play-offs, the season would have been written off there and then. The defending champions were far ahead of the others in terms of points, quality and form. Even with the injustice of having to negotiate a six-way play-off, few would have betted against Seongnam doing just that, just as they did last year.

Then it all started to go wrong. Suwon Samsung Bluewings were the ones who threw the spanner into the depths of the yellow winning machine. August 15 is Independence Day in the Land of the Morning Calm and in the evening, 30,000 Suwon fans went wild as they celebrated a 2-1 win over Seongnam at the 'Big Bird' Stadium.

Coach Kim-Hak-beom wasn't overly concerned and gently reminded reporters that his team was still six points ahead and that Suwon was always a tough place to come. The wily Kim pointed out that Suwon that had been the last team to take three points from Seongnam the previous October and who, he asked, had triumphed when the two met in the championship final?

It wasn't looking that simple. After a smooth season without injuries or problems, the fixture list was being a little unkind to the champions. The following game saw third-place Ulsan Hyundai Horang-I visit the Tancheon Stadium on a sticky Sunday evening. The Tigers snatched a win with five minutes remaining as Brazilian striker Leandro Machado suddenly unearthed shooting boots that had been buried for almost two years.

Not far away on the same night, over 40,000 fans saw Suwon defeat rivals FC Seoul 2-1 and suddenly the gap was down to four. It was a blip, they said just south of the capital, and no time to panic.

Bells started ringing however after another defeat, this time a 2-1 reverse at Pohang Steelers. At the same time, in the same south-eastern region of the country, Suwon defeated Daegu FC 1-0. From nine to one in the space of three games, Suwon was on a roll while the champs' mid-season blip was taking on slump proportions.

It got worse. On Tuesday August 28, Suwon won their fifth consecutive game, a 1-0 turgid triumph at home to Chunnam Dragons courtesy of young striker Ha Tae-gyun, to go top of the table by a clear two points. 24 hours later, Seongnam lost again, a third defeat in four games.

A loss at home to Gyeongnam FC is no disgrace but it a surprise. Two points could be overturned this weekend when Seongnam take on Daejeon and in any event the team is already virtually guaranteed a top six play-off place. Worrying for Kim Hak-beom ahead of a quarter-final against Al Karama of Syria in the Asian Champions League next month, the start of a crucial phase of the season, Seongnam's veneer of invincibility has well and truly gone – ripped off and trampled on by a stubborn Suwon side.

Olyroos beat North Korea 1-0

Olyroos beat North Korea 1-0

Olyroos captain Mark Milligan scored the only goal of the match in which Australia created most of the attacking opportunities.

Australia sustained pressure and went close tos scoring early in the second half before breaking through in the 50th minute when Milligan nodded home a delightful Kristan Sarkies corner at the back post.

The goal seemed to spark the visitors and Australia wase then forced to repel numerous attacking raids from a side that lifted in urgency and began showing the attacking spark that had been lacking earlier in the contest.

To qualify for the Games in China, the Olyroos must top a tough group that includes Lebanon and Australia's new footballing nemesis, 2004 Olympic semi-finalist Iraq.

Graham Arnold's side dominated possession in the first half, creating numerous chances but failing to land a killer blow.

Danish-based striker David Williams had two powerful volleys go close and Perth Glory midfield player Billy Celeski had two good chances also, forcing a tough save.

North Korea looked dangerous on the counter-attack at times but created virtually no meaningful chances in an unimaginative and defensive first-half display.

The visitors were warned for time-wasting and eventually North Korea's keeper Myong Guk Ri was booked in the final minute of the first half.

When Milligan's goal broke the nil-all deadlock, the game opened up to an extent, with the North Koreans being far more positive, pushing players forward in an attempt to even the score.

There were some nervous moments for the Australian side in the 60th minute when a corner fell for striker Chol Man Choe, whose shot from inside the box smashed off the underside of the bar and then shortly afterwards when Chol Hyok An broke free but shot low and wide right.

Sydney defender Ruben Zadcovich blew two golden opportunities to seal the match for the Olyroos.

It was a game Australia dominated but could have easily ended up an embarrassing draw.

Although Arnold was happy with four points from the opening two matches of the campaign, he bemoaned the Olyroos' wasteful finishing.

"I was happy but I'm not happy with the final third," Arnold said.

"The boys carried out the game-plan great, defensively from the front to the back we were very good.

"But in international football when you have, on three or four occasions, three-against-one and you blow them every time then you'll end up getting punished.

"They've just got to relax a bit more. They get a rush of blood and get excited in front of goal and (think) what do I do now?

"That's why I got angry at the end because that could've been a one-all draw when we should've been much more clinical with our opportunities."
