Villa boss O'Neill to bid for Hearts keeper Gordon
tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is considering a move for Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon. O'Neill is aware it will take £8 million to take the Scotland No1 south, but won't flinch as he has the backing of Villa chairman Randy Lerner.
Villa No1 Thomas Sorensen has broke down with a hamstring injury this week, making O'Neill's need to find a new shot-stopper even more acute.

Villa keeper Sorensen: Injury not so bad
tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Aston Villa goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen remains upbeat, despite collecting a hamstring injury this week in Canada. Sorensen said: "The news is a lot better than I thought it would be. When I did the injury, I really thought it might be something serious.
"But we've had a look at it and it's just a slight strain, so I shouldn't be out of action for too long.
"It's too soon to say what the timescale might be yet, but the good news is this is not a serious injury."

Portsmouth boss Redknapp: Liverpool can win title
tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp reckons Liverpool will be genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season. Rafael Benitez's side take on Pompey in the final of the Asia Trophy in Hong Kong Stadium on Friday evening.
And Redknapp is confident that after a summer of heavy investment, the coming campaign will not prove to be another false dawn for Reds supporters.
"I do think they will be contenders this year," he said.
"They're looking very strong. The backbone of the team is still Carragher and Gerrard, two homegrown players, but they've added a lot of quality again and will be a lot closer to Manchester United and Chelsea.
"Tottenham are a team that could push into the top four this year as well if anyone's going to. They've got that bigger squad and have spent a lot of money over the last couple of years so they'll be very strong.
"West Ham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, they'll all improve, but I think everyone will have a go this year.
"We'll try to improve on what we did last season. We finished ninth and missed out on Europe on the last day of the season, but I think with this squad the aim is to get a European place this year and I think it's possible.
He added: "I'm quite happy with the squad.
"Unlike other years where we've been desperate to get players in just to have half a chance, we're strong this year. If I can add a bit extra, I will, but I've got to find the right player."

New West Ham captain Neill determined to silence doubters
tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Lucas Neill is determined to fulfil expectations after being named new West Ham United captain yesterday. Australia international Neill was criticised after his January decision to walk out on Blackburn and turn down the chance of European glory with Liverpool for a reported £70,000-a-week salary with the relegation-strugglers.
To make matters worse the defender was injured in his first match for the Hammers, missed three of the next four games and looked like sliding into the Coca-Cola Championship until their miraculous late escape.
But manager Alan Curbishley, who attacked the 'Baby Bentley', rich-kid culture among top players when he took over at Upton Park just before Christmas, has named Neill as his new captain.
