O’Neill flies the flag for England’s future

Quote:
O’Neill flies the flag for England’s future

With so many foreign players being exhibited each week in the Premier League, it was refreshing to see Aston Villa, a historic club with strong traditions, field a side containing eight English players this week.

Whilst building the defence around experience of Laursen, Mellberg and Bouma, Villa were able to field a side against West Ham on Saturday with a core of English talent. This is mainly due to the traditions and beliefs of their current manager Martin O’Neill. O’Neill has been touted as a future England manager, and it was widely thought that he would succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson after last year’s disappointing World Cup in Germany.

England’s loss has been Aston Villa’s gain. Thought of as a sleeping giant, the Midlands club have made a steady start to their new association with O’Neill and the signs are looking good for the future. Despite bringing in some experienced journeyman immediately after O’Neill took charge at Villa Park, this was seen as only a temporary fix until he was able to assess the requirements of the club. Players have come and gone in the first year of his tenure and the present squad boasts an array of fine English talent.

“It is refreshing to see a club like Aston Villa invest in some of the best talent that England has to offer”

Although current market forces have made O’Neill arguably pay over the odds for certain individuals - captain Nigel Reo-Coker cost the club £8.5million and Curtis Davies could cost the club £9million if his current loan deal is made permanent next season - the £8million paid for Ashley Young looks like a shrewd piece of business with the exciting youngster starting the season in exceptional form and, as a consequence, he is surely close to a full England cap.

The Aston Villa manager has also been able to blood exciting academy players Luke Moore and Gabriel Agbonlahor into the first team with great success, whilst it has been goals from Craig Gardner that has secured the points for the Villans in their last two league outings.

The question of Aston Villa’s possible challenge to the monopoly of the top four remains in doubt for this season although it is clear that the inspirational Irishman is looking to build a team capable of challenging in the future. O’Neill’s side will undoubtedly have a core of English players for the foreseeable future and it is of no coincidence that Gareth Barry looks like becoming an England regular under his stewardship. On-loan goalkeeper Scott Carson, who performed well in last summer’s under-21 European Championships, may also be seeking a permanent contract at the club if discussions over his future with Liverpool continue to falter come the end of the season. Paul Robinson’s recent misdemeanours for club and country could even open the door for Carson to become England’s number one for next summer’s European Championships, should they qualify.

Much has been made of the dearth of home grown talent coming through the academies at Premier League clubs and graduating into the first team. With international investment at an all time high in the Premier League, clubs are able to attract the best young players from all over the world with extensive, well-paid contracts at the expense of young English players. It is refreshing to see a club like Aston Villa invest in some of the best talent that England has to offer, as well as developing the skills of academy players.

With the American investment of Randy Learner behind him, O’Neill will be determined to prove the doubters of the quality of young English players wrong and move Aston Villa forward. They could be at the start of an exciting chapter in the club’s history.

Ronaldo only makes the bench after his game for Portugal. Nani will start, however and Van Der Saar back in the line-up. Villa unchaged.,

Man United played a great game in the end they won 4-1 and Aston Villa had two players sent off. They keep up the pressure on Arsenal and are looking very strong like last season.

Anderson looks to have settled into the EPL now.

O'Neill: We Should Have Scored A Second

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill admitted that his team paid a heavy price for some silly mistakes, and had only themselves to blame.

Aston Villa took a shock 12th minute lead through Gabriel Agbonlahor, but were unable to hold on to it, as much due to Manchester United's aggressive attitude as their own lack of concentration.

That they could have actually taken a 2-0 lead before the Red Devils equalized made it even worse for Martin O'Neill to accept.

"We got off to a great start and maybe should have scored a second goal," lamented O'Neill.

"But the goals we conceded were really poor from our point of view.

"They were avoidable and suddenly we find ourselves 3-1 down at half-time."

"We tried to get back in it but I thought the sending off of Nigel [Reo-Coker] was a big moment in the game," he continued.

"The first booking was debatable, the second is never a yellow card in a million years. It was really harsh.

"I'm really disappointed because we were really up for this game, ready to go, and we were made to pay for our defending."

Villa chairman to back O'Neill in January market

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has been promised plenty of cash to splash in January.

Villa chairman Randy Lerner said: "We haven't set a budget but Martin needs the ability to be aggressive in the transfer market."

Carson rues opening door to Villa rivals

Scott Carson admits he faces a big task winning back his Aston Villa place as he faces suspension after his red card against Manchester United.

The on-loan Liverpool goalkeeper says Stuart Taylor did well as his replacement and told Villa's website: "He made a couple of good saves. The penalty was a good save, so fair play to him.

"We've got Thomas Sorensen as well. I'm not taking it for granted that I'm number one. I've got to work hard and that is what I've been doing. It is the manager's decision who he picks but I'll just keep working hard and hope I can establish myself."

Villa keeper Carson accepts red card

Aston Villa goalkeeper Scott Carson accepts his red card suffered against Manchester United in Saturday's 4-1 defeat.

Carson told Villa's website: "I think at 3-1 down with only ten men, I think it is a bit harsh but if it was 0-0, then fair enough. I also think Isaiah Osbourne got back as well and was the last man but I'll take it on the chin.

"I thought we were still in the game at 3-1 and had a chance of nicking a couple of goals. We were still causing them a few problems.

"It is my first sending-off - it is not nice walking off. We were chasing the game trying to get two goals and there was no point just sitting back and defending so I'm not going to blame anyone."

Taylor delighted with new Villa chance

Aston Villa goalkeeper Stuart Taylor is hoping for a run of first team games with No1 Scott Carson suspended.

He told Villa's website: "It's obviously down to the manager. We've still got Thomas Sorensen at the club and I don't know what the manager's thinking.

"If I get the nod, I'll go out there and look to do a job. It's the job of a substitute goalie to wait for a chance and take it. You feel sorry for Scott, but if I get the chance, I have to do my best to take it."

Villa have top prospect in Delfouneso

Aston Villa have another hot striker prospect on their hands in the form of England U17 international Nathan Delfouneso.

Following in the footsteps of Luke Moore and Gabby Agbonlahor, Delfouneso signalled his class with a superb hat-trick in yesterday's 6-0 European qualifying victory over Malta.

Salifou enjoys impressive Villa debut

Moustapha Salifou enjoyed an impressive debut for Aston Villa in last night's 6-0 thrashing of Chelsea reserves.

The Togo international midfielder was handed 90 minutes by Villa coach Kevin MacDonald and created two of Villa's six goals, which was dominated by a Marlon Harewood hat-trick.

Villa's Barry so close to Spurs move - mentor

Gareth Barry's former youth coach is convinced the Aston Villa captain would have left for Tottenham if manager Martin O'Neill had not arrived last year.

Lee Rogers, Centre of Excellence coach at Brighton & Hove Albion and the man who first spotted Barry's ability, told the Sunday Mercury: "Playing for England means something to him because he thought his chance had gone.

"This is where Martin O'Neill comes in. What he has done at Villa is make his players believe they can play for England.

"I know Martin has instilled so much confidence back into Gareth.

"He would have left Villa had it not been for their manager. Spurs would have been his preferred choice but Portsmouth was also a possibility.

"But Martin got him to stay, built his squad around him and then got him back into the England squad at the age of 26.

"It's amazing to see what has happened to Gareth."

Villa's Agbonlahor: Age shouldn't prevent England call

Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor insists his young age shouldn't prevent him from breaking into the full England squad.

"Am I good enough to play for England yet? I don't want to say I am and I don't want to say I'm not," Agbonlahor, 21, told the Sunday Mercury. "I'll leave that for other people to judge.

"At the moment I just want to concentrate on my club football and whatever happens with England will happen.

"I wanted to prove I wasn't a one-season wonder and hopefully so far I've done that.

"I'll keep playing the best I can for my club and if I get the call-up then great, but that's not in my head at the moment.

"I've seen people like Micah Richards get in who are younger than me so if you're confident enough it's not about age."

Porto's Bosingwa: No Aston Villa contact

Porto defender Jose Bosingwa insists he hasn't heard from Aston Villa about a January move to the Premiership.

"I have not talked to anyone from England about my possible transfer," said Bosingwa. "It does not interest me because I have a contract with Porto."
