Paul Jewell is an early candidate for Steve Bruce's job at Birmingham City. Bruce is set to move to Wigan Athletic in the coming days and The Sun says Jewell is a candidate for a move to St Andrews. Jewell is being linked with a host of vacant posts, including jobs with Preston and the Republic of Ireland. However, he is quite happy to bide his time, knowing he is in big demand at the moment. And if the Birmingham job does become free, he could find himself top of their wanted list. |

Birmingham board need Yeung permission over new manager
Birmingham City's current board will need approval from Carson Yeung before naming a replacement for Wigan Athletic-bound Steve Bruce. The current board have already been frustrated in seeing Yeung block the new contract they had agreed six months ago with Bruce - a major factor in his deciding to quit with Wigan poised to appoint him as successor to Chris Hutchings next week. Now, legally, co-owner David Sullivan and chairman David Gold have to get the agreement of Yeung to bring in a replacement as he is City's major shareholder with 29.9%. It means if Yeung digs his heels in, City might not be able to appoint a new manager until any takeover goes through. |

Birmingham threaten 'gardening leave' for Black
Birmingham City are determined to stop assistant manager Eric Black following Steve Bruce to Wigan Athletic. The Mirror says Birmingham supremo David Sullivan last night threatened to put Black on gardening leave to stop the Scot walking out on City. Blues have given boss Bruce, 46, in charge at St Andrews since December 2001, permission to speak to their Premier League rivals about becoming their new manager after accepting a huge compensation package. And Bruce is set to be unveiled at the JJB Stadium next week on a bumper four-year deal worth around 2million a year when Latics owner Dave Whelan returns from his Barbados holiday home. But Birmingham's hierarchy, who met at Sullivan's Essex mansion yesterday, are determined to hang on to Black as they want him to be their caretaker boss. Former Coventry manager Black, 44, who is on a 12-month rolling contract, is a vital cog at the club. He is tactically astute and can speak to Birmingham's foreign stars in several languages. And Birmingham know without the highly-rated coach they will find it very difficult to attract a capable replacement while there is so much uncertainty surrounding the club due to Carson Yeung's protracted takeover. |

Birmingham reserves boss Bertschin also wants Wigan move
Birmingham City risk losing reserve-team boss Keith Bertschin to Wigan Athletic, along with manager Steve Bruce and No2 Eric Black. The Mail on Sunday says Birmingham want Black to move into a caretaker role but he is keen on moving to JJB Stadium along with Bertschin. Negotiations are continuing between the two clubs and, if a satisfactory agreement is reached, academy director Terry Westley could be in charge for next Saturday's home Barclays Premier League clash with Portsmouth. |

Wigan chairman Whelan: No Birmingham agreement for Black
Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan admits there's no agreement in-place for Birmingham City assistant manager Eric Black to follow Steve Bruce to the JJB stadium. The St Andrews board are keen to retain the services of Black to ensure some continuity as plans for appointing Bruce's replacement remain in the balance while uncertainty over the proposed takeover by Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung continues. "Eric Black has to be agreed between Steve and the management," explained Whelan. "I understand Birmingham want some continuity. He wants to come with Steve because a team always stays together. "Whether he will come immediately I don't know. "It is a mess when you are looking for a new manager. Everything is stirred up. It is never a happy time and the sooner it is over and Steve joins us I will be a very happy man." |

Gold defends Birmingham board
Birmingham City chairman David Gold has defended his board as they prepare to lose manager Steve Bruce to Wigan Athletic. Blues are stepping up their bid to try to keep hold of Bruce's assistant Eric Black while they look for a replacement for the former Manchester United captain. But it could be a long drawn-out process as prospective new owner Carson Yeung has to approve any potential candidates - and there is increasing doubt that he will be unable to raise the necessary funds to take full control of City. Gold would only say: "It is a confusing situation and these are difficult times. We are doing our best to resolve all of these issues." Academy director Terry Westley is expected to be in charge of team affairs for Saturday's home clash with Portsmouth if Black leaves Birmingham. But a source close to the club told PA Sport: "What manager in his right mind is going to want to come to Birmingham as things currently stand? "He might join on Monday and then be sacked next month if Carson Yeung somehow manages to raise the funds needed to buy Birmingham. "It is a nightmare situation for the club, who only six months ago were euphoric after gaining promotion back to the Premier League. Now it all looks to be falling apart." |

McClaren in frame for Birmingham job
Steve McClaren is being linked with the manager's job at Birmingham City. The Daily Mail says McClaren's sacking won't put off Birmingham's board, which may turn to the former Middlesbrough boss after being rejected by Martin Jol and Harry Redknapp among others. |

Scolari ducks out of Birmingham talks
Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has rejected an approach from Birmingham City. Scolari, 59, was due to fly in for talks with Brum's co-owner David Sullivan about the vacancy created by Steve Bruce's departure. Sullivan - who has already been turned down by Martin Jol and Marcello Lippi - was set to offer Scolari a whopping 4.8million package. But the Brazilian cancelled within hours of Steve McClaren's England sacking. A source in Portugal said: "He doesn't want to leave Portugal now, although he might be interested if England came back." |

Jewell turns down Birmingham, Ireland
Former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell has turned down approaches from both Birmingham City and the Republic of Ireland to fill their vacant managerial roles. The former Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday boss admitted the uncertainty surrounding a potential takeover at St Andrew's had put him off the role with the Premier League club. "Someone called me last week and said would I be interested in the Birmingham job?" he told Sky Sports News. "It's a bit unstable for me in that who owns the club, so I'm not in the running for the Birmingham job, no." Meanwhile, Jewell decided against putting his name fully into the running to replace Steve Staunton as Republic of Ireland manager. "I'm very flattered I have to say but I'm looking for the day-to-day involvement on the training ground with the players," he added. "I'm only 43. Maybe further down the line I might consider it. I've had a great six months out of the game but I'm looking for the day-to-day stuff." |

Bookies convinced McLeish next Birmingham boss
Alex McLeish is a certainty to be the new Birmingham boss according to bookmakers, who have stopped taking bets on the Scotland boss. Speculation is mounting that McLeish is set to return to club management after just failing to help Scotland qualify for Euro 2008, with a number of clubs chasing his services. The former Hibs and Rangers manager has himself indicated that he is keen to get involved in the day-to-day club management again, although the SFA are trying to persuade him to pen a new contract.. |

Birmingham to make McLeish approach - report
Written by: AFP
The Premiership side are seeking a manager after Steve Bruce left them to join fellow top-flight strugglers Wigan. According to Britain's Press Association, Birmingham are well-placed to make former Scotland defender McLeish an attractive offer after receiving three million pounds (six million dollars) compensation from Wigan for Bruce, who left with 19 months of his contract remaining. Ideally City, a point above the relegation zone, would like a new man in charge before this weekend's league match against Tottenham. There has long been speculation that McLeish, who won plaudits for so nearly guiding Scotland, who beat France home and away, to the brink of Euro 2008 qualification before they fell at the final hurdle against Italy, would be tempted 'south of the border' by a Premiership club. His former Aberdeen team-mate Eric Black, previously Bruce's assistant, was in charge for Sunday's 2-0 defeat against Portsmouth but may yet rejoin his old Blues boss at Wigan. Birmingham face an uncertain future off the pitch with the club frustrated by whether Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung, who has repeatedly talked of taking over at St Andrews, has the 35 million pounds needed to buy out chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan. Yeung has until Friday to convince the duo he can meet Sullivan's December 20 takeover deadline. |

McLeish welcomes Aitken, Watson to Birmingham
Birmingham City will benefit from the experience of new coaching appointments Andy Watson and Roy Aitken, says manager Alex McLeish. McLeish stressed: "They are both first-team coaches. There is not an assistant manager and a coach - they are both first-team coaches. "They bring leadership as well and are people persons. I know that they will get close to the players and that the players will like them. "The players will understand that they have boundaries but we will try to and make this a club where players want to come." Aitken, aged 49, a former Celtic stalwart and Scottish international, managed Aberdeen between 1995-97 and assisted at Leeds United, Villa and Scotland. Watson, aged 48, was a former team-mate of McLeish's at Aberdeen and has coached for him at all his clubs as well as Scotland. |

Birmingham boss McLeish: I must get best from young squad
New Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish says he's always been a big fan of the Premiership and kept up-to-speed on the competition while he was in charge of Scotland. He said: "If I wasn't at a game there was nothing like settling down on a Sunday and watching three or four games in a row. "Her indoors is not too happy about it but I have followed the Premiership since its inception. "There is probably no squad that I don't know about and no players that I don't know about." McLeish hopes he can get the Birmingham squad to fulfil their potential after a run of six defeats in seven games left them just a point above the relegation zone. He added: "I know that Birmingham added some young players in the summer as Steve Bruce wanted to take a youthful approach. "It is up to them to show what they can do and to show that they can be Premiership players. "There are a lot of young players here who have to realise their potential. "But myself, Roy Aitken and Andy Watson aim to use our experience to get that out of them." |

Birmingham's Palacios stopped from entering country
Birmingham City midfielder Wilson Palacios has been blocked from re-entering the country due to visa problems. Palacios flew back to Honduras after his younger brother, Edwin Rene, was kidnapped. Birmingham chairman Gold accepts McLeish could move onto bigger things
Birmingham City chairman David Gold admits Alex McLeish could easily be joining a bigger club in the future. Gold explained: "I'd love to think he could be the next Alex Ferguson. "It certainly struck me that he has similar traits. He has an almost identical background. He even looks like him. If he can be as successful, that would be great. "I almost want him to be poached because that means he is doing a good job for Birmingham City. "I see this as a real coup for the club. So what if he's never played Premier League football in England? Jose Mourinho hadn't played or managed here either and he didn't do too badly." McLeish has NO compensation clause in his contract should prospective new owner Carson Yeung come in and decide he wants a different manager. Gold said: "It does take a leap of faith on Alex's behalf. But he has the chance to achieve his dream." |

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish:
"When you have a run of poor results, it does get to the players. We have to rebuild that confidence and get them to believe in themselves. "There is nothing like a good result to do that. Even a good performance can do it. If we get a good showing at Tottenham we can take everything forward from there. "Getting something at White Hart Lane will be fantastic for confidence. We know there is a crucial period coming up but the players should see it as a challenge." |

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish on his style of football:
"It is difficult to have a philosophy when you don't have the millions you would like to have at your disposal. "But I have always encouraged my players to pass the ball. "These lads here must do that. If these guys have got into the Premiership they must be able to pass the ball." |
