Birmingham boss Bruce unlikely to land Arsenal's Bendtner
Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce doesn't believe he'll manage to re-sign Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner in January. Bruce admits Bendtner would be on his wish list after the Danish international impressed in helping City gain promotion from the Coca-Cola Championship last season. But he believes it is highly unlikely Arsene Wenger would agree to releasing Bendtner when the transfer window opens in January. Bruce said: "If you look at us compared to last season then, for me, in a crucial area of the pitch up front, we are not as good as we were last year in the Championship because we are without Nicklas Bendtner. "Strengthening in that area remains a priority and I've got to try and identify some people, that's for sure. "But I don't think there is any chance of us getting Bendtner back on loan. I really don't think there is any chance of that happening. "I know it is being bandied about in the media. I don't think there is any chance of that at all. "I don't think they would let him out for a start and there has been no conversation with Mr Wenger. It would be on my wish list but it is not going to happen." |

Birmingham boss Bruce admits even Villa friendly "spicy"
Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce has revealed how even a closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa can spill over. The recent practice match was meant as a fitness exercise, but Birmingham manager Bruce revealed it was "kicking off everywhere". Villa boss Martin O'Neill described it as "feisty". It also got both men wondering what the real thing would be like at St Andrew's. Bruce said: "I know they're our fiercest rivals but Martin needed a few players fit, I needed a few fit, so we organised a game between ourselves - and it was a bit spicy, to say the least. "It was incredible. I don't know who the referee was but he played his part - he let everything go. It was just what both of us wanted. It was a proper, no holds- barred game. Expect the same again on Sunday. "Martin and I just stood there enjoying it. We got far more out of it than you could get out on the training pitch. You don't normally get that kind of game, but I've got the hugest respect for Martin - he's a football person." O'Neill was just as enthusiastic about the game, which Villa won 4-3 at their Bodymoor Heath training ground, although Birmingham's fit-again Mikael Forssell gave a warning of the threat he poses with a hat-trick. "It was lively stuff, quite strong really, and I don't think either of us expected it to get as feisty as it did," explained O'Neill. "What it confirmed to me was this is not an ordinary game on Sunday. They're meaty affairs with plenty of atmosphere. It's a big derby, my first, but not the players' first. I just hope we keep a clear head and show some discipline. "I don't want to end up as we did against Manchester United with nine players." |

Birmingham boss Bruce delighted with ex-Villa defender Ridgewell
Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce is delighted with the way former Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell has bedded in as captain this season. Villa boss Martin O'Neill could not guarantee Ridgewell a game so he left in a £2million deal and Bruce believes the centre back has benefited. "He's still got to improve but Martin has made a decision, which you have to accept, and he's brought in Zat Knight and Curtis Davies," said Bruce. "It was his call. Martin's obviously looking to get a team into that European place, that's his remit. It's all about opinions. I think I got a terrific bargain in Liam. He had no qualms about coming across the city. "When you look at his statistics, he's a boy of 23, he's played nearly 100 times for Villa. For us it was a no-brainer." O'Neill admits he is not surprised to see Ridgewell captaining Birmingham, despite letting him go. "He's doing fine, they're pleased with him. He wanted to go and that happens," he said. |

O'Neill confident Villa kids won't freeze
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill hopes his young players won't freeze in tomorrow's derby with Birmingham City. He said: "Is it an advantage having local players? I don't know. I am pleased we've got some local lads playing in the game. It is very encouraging from our viewpoint. Whether that stands them in great stead or not, I don't know. "I am hoping those who have played before, who know what the derby is about, will be able to draw on that experience. "For some of the younger boys, it could be overwhelming but on the other hand they could forget all the pressures and just go out and play their normal game. "If they can play remotely like their normal game, like Agbonlahor generally does, that would be brilliant. It should have some atmosphere. I've watched the games on television before and they are pretty meaty affairs." |

Villa's Mellberg: Sting taken out of derby
Olof Mellberg doesn't believe today's derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham has the tension of past clashes. He said: "It is a different game now. When I played in it for the first time, it was different because they hadn't been in the Premier League for quite a long time and they were really underdogs. "It is different now. We have played them a few times and the atmosphere is a little bit different now but it is always a tough place to go to. "It is always a really good atmosphere in the derby. Maybe it has changed a little bit because we have played quite a few times now. "Birmingham have been a Premier League side for most of the time I've been here so it is not really the same as the first time." |

Knight convinced Villa are Premiership force
Zat Knight is convinced Aston Villa have the Premiership rattled. Defender Knight says he cannot wait to underline Villa's potential today at their fierce rivals when they visit St Andrews in the Second City derby. "The boys are doing really well attacking-wise," said Knight, who won his second and last England cap in May 2005. "There is such a lot of raw talent and the manager is telling the younger players to go out there and do their thing. "I have played against them myself already this season and they are a nightmare to mark, so everyone at the club is talking about Europe. "I think that is realistic if we can keep our players fit and add to the squad in January. "If you look at the players we have brought in I think they are a bit of a steal, with the likes of Ashley Young now in the England squad." |

Notts County land Birmingham youngster Pearce
Notts County have signed defender Krystian Pearce on a month's loan from Birmingham City. The 17-year-old becomes Magpies manager Ian McParland's second acquisition from a Premier League club in the space of a week after Craig Lindfield moved to Meadow Lane from Liverpool. McParland told the club's official website: "(Birmingham manager) Steve Bruce rates Krystian very highly and he feels that he has now reached the stage of his development where he needs to go out and get some league experience. "That is good news for us and although he is only here for a month, if things work out for all concerned he might be here a bit longer." Pearce goes straight into the squad for County's first round FA Cup tie at home to Histon at the weekend |
