Blackburn's medical staff will assess the injury Aaron Mokoena today to discover the extent of the problem. The South African had to be stretchered off the pitch after going down under his own weight during Wednesday night's 2-1 win over Portsmouth. Initial reports suggested it may be a broken leg but Rovers boss Mark Hughes was hopeful the injury was not as serious as first feared. "There was a lot of concern for Aaron," said Hughes. "He went off after treatment and obviously felt well enough to come back on but then collapsed under weight of his own leg. "You obviously don't like to see that, and we can only hope that it doesn't prove to be as serious as it looked initially." With Robbie Savage already sidelined through injury Hughes will be hoping he is not deprived of another midfield hard man, particularly with games against Liverpool and Manchester United coming up |

Redknapp won over by Blackburn duo McCarthy, Santa Cruz
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was impressed by Blackburn's strike-pair Benni McCarthy and Roque Santa Cruz after last night's Carling Cup defeat. He said: "One is very clever with the ball and the other is a strong lad who is always looking to score. They gave us problems and we conceded two bad goals." |

Blackburn boost after Mokoena scan
Blackburn Rovers midfielder Aaron Mokoena has been boosted by the news that he did not suffer a broken leg in the 2-1 Carling Cup victory at Portsmouth. The 26-year-old South African has been earmarked to fill in for the injured Robbie Savage, but feared a lengthy lay-off himself after being stretchered off during the first half at Fratton Park. However, a relieved Rovers boss Mark Hughes told the club's official website: "He's okay thankfully. "He obviously got a bang on his leg, he's has a plate in it from a previous injury and as he went back on to the field of play he felt a pain which probably frightened him more than anything. "So obviously he came off, but I've seen him this morning and he's walking around. "He's a little bit sore, but we'll see how he is tomorrow. However, he's obviously not as bad as we initially thought. "He feels a lot better in himself and hopefully he'll settle down and he may well be an option for us." |

Blackburn's McCarthy: Chelsea interest shook me up
Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy admits he was unsettled over the summer due to speculation regarding a move to Chelsea. He said: "When you are linked with other clubs, knowing it's probably true, all you think about in that moment is wow, maybe you can play in the Champions League. "I think it surprised me that it would mess my head up so much. I was surprised that I could be brought down by it. "I am 29 and not many players at my age get the chance to go to a massive club in the Premier League. That's what probably got me down when it didn't happen for me." McCarthy, who has yet to commit to a new contract and could still leave next summer, was so out of sorts at the start of the season that boss Mark Hughes dropped him after a defeat by Portsmouth at home in September and it was the wake-up call he needed. McCarthy said: "I told myself I had to put in the same performances as I did in the beginning at Rovers, so people would not say my first season was pure luck." |

Blackburn hero Shearer hails Hughes' McCarthy coup
Former Blackburn striker Alan Shearer believes Mark Hughes pulled off "a great coup" when he persuaded Benni McCarthy to join Rovers. McCarthy, 29, has been in a rich vein of form and made it five goals in four games when he scored in the Carling Cup victory against Portsmouth in midweek. McCarthy scored 18 Premier League goals in his debut season and Shearer has watched the former Porto striker's progress with interest. "I am surprised other teams did not have a pop at McCarthy," said the former England skipper. "He has always been a top scorer and it was a great coup for Mark Hughes to get him. "He has been inspirational for them. If you are going to win games you need goalscorers and Blackburn have them." |
