Roque Santa Cruz will not play in Paraguay's World Cup qualifiers after picking up an injury at the weekend. The Blackburn striker suffered tendonitis in Rovers' win over Birmingham at Ewood Park on Sunday. National team doctors have ruled Santa Cruz out of Saturday's game in Peru and the fixture against Uruguay four days later.

Blackburn's Savage admits fitness struggle

Blackburn's Robbie Savage has revealed he is concerned about his fitness as he is having problems with his recovery from a broken leg.

The tenacious Rovers midfielder broke his leg last January against Watford which forced him out of action for six months.

Savage has made a successful return to action this season, but the injury is still niggling him.

The former Leicester man has been forced to limp out of three games this season after taking a knock the same leg - and Savage concedes it is a worry for him.

"I had to go off last weekend because I got another whack on the shin. It's happening a lot," Savage told the Sunday Mirror.

Blackburn's Santa Cruz confident of comeback

Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz hopes to be back in action in time for the Premier League games with Liverpool and Manchester United in November.

An MRI scan has shown the Paraguay frontman has tendinitis, and as a result he has pulled out of his country's World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay.

The 26-year-old has a history of knee problems but he believes proper rest and recuperation will enable him to return to the Rovers team next month.

"I've been forcing the injury in the last few weeks, playing with injections," said Santa Cruz in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

"I've reached a point where I had to decide if I should continue but run the risk of having to stop for two or three months, or if I should stop now and see if the injury gets better.

"I'm sad not to be there (with the national team).

"I don't like having to make a decision like this, but in the long term it means that I should be ready for games in November."

Blackburn, Wigan tracking Barnsley keeper Muller

Blackburn and Wigan are both keeping tabs on Barnsley goalkeeper Heinz Muller after a series of top displays in the Championship.

The 29-year-old former Hanover keeper has been an ever-present for the Tykes this season, since taking over in the second match of the season.

BEUTY from Tugay. 3-0, looks to me like Reading has serious defensive problems. Tugay scored it heard it was a cracker.

Hughes delighted with "inventive" Blackburn

Three first half goals set Blackburn on their way to a 4-2 home win over struggling Reading.

Benni McCarthy scored his first of the afternoon on 16 minutes and provider Roque Santa Cruz added the second five minutes later.

Rovers seemed set for a comfortable victory when Tugay hit a glorious third from all of 30 yards as Reading looked a side who had lost four of their last six games.

In the second half Blackburn lost their way as Reading poured forward in trying to save the game. They gave themselves a glimmer of hope when substitute Kevin Doyle headed a late goal but within a minute Rovers restored their three goal advantage with a McCarthy penalty.

Doyle got his second in injury time but it was Blackburn who held on for their sixth win in seven home games.

"I thought we where excellent the first half, enthused the Blackburn boss, Mark Hughes.

"We where really inventive in the final third with our interplay and speed of movement. It was difficult for them (Reading) to cope at times.

"Three goals before half time is something of a rarity for me but I quite enjoyed it. Second half the intensity of our play dropped which is somewhat understandable but we never lost our grip on the game.

"Disappointed with conceding from set pieces but apart from that I thought we were good value today."
