Napoli bid for Sao Paulo star Josue

Quote:
Napoli have tabled a bid for Sao Paulo midfielder Josue. The Brazil international lifted the Copa America last month and is also attracting interest from Spain's Real Murcia and Russian clubs.
Sao Paulo coach Muricy Ramalho admitted last night they could not compete with Napoli's contract offer to Josue, but was adamant that "he won't leave us until the end of the championship [in December]".

Ferguson: Hargreaves, Anderson set for Man Utd debuts

Quote:
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to let £35million new arrivals Owen Hargreaves and Anderson loose over the next 72 hours as their pre-season campaign steps up a pace. Hargreaves spent the entire Far East tour as a frustrated spectator as he struggled to overcome a minor ankle injury he aggravated in training.
Meanwhile, Anderson only started training at Carrington this week after spending his summer on Copa America duty with Brazil.
But, in the aftermath of Wednesday night's 3-2 friendly defeat to Inter Milan at Old Trafford, Ferguson confirmed both men would play some part in United's next two friendlies; at Doncaster on Friday and Peterborough 24 hours later.
"Owen Hargreaves and Anderson will be involved over the next couple of games," said Ferguson.
Neither player is expected to play any part in Sunday's Community Shield showdown with Chelsea at Wembley but, provided they come through their forthcoming tests unscathed, and a likely appearance at either Dunfermline or Glentoran next Wednesday, both should be in Ferguson's squad when United open the defence of their Premier League title against Reading on August 12.

Arsenal striker Eduardo wins work permit

Quote:

Eduardo da Silva has been cleared to play for Arsenal after the club successfully appeal to the Home Office for a work permit. The Gunners signed the Brazil-born Croatia striker from Dinamo Zagreb following the sale of captain Thierry Henry.
However, because he had not met the criteria of 75% of international appearances over the past two years, his application for a work permit went to an appeal.
With the formalities of the deal - understood to be worth £8million the 24 year old is now free to continue his pre-season preparations with the Gunners.
Arsene Wenger had been "optimistic" of a successful appeal.
"In our first attempt they strictly applied the rule," he said at the weekend, when Arsenal won the Emirates Cup.
"Eduardo has played 50% of national team games for Croatia. I consider it a fantastic achievement at the age of 24 - and he played every single game in the last year."

Allardyce: Cacapa top signing for Newcastle

Allardyce: Cacapa top signing for Newcastle

Quote:
Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce is delighted after Brazilian international defender Claudio Cacapa underwent a medical at St James' Park.
The former Lyon captain has been on Tyneside since last weekend discussing personal terms. Allardyce told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: "He is a top player and we will be delighted if we can pull this off as we regard him as a big capture.
"Our fans should not be put off by the fact they may not have heard of Cacapa because he has certainly been heard of in Brazil and France.
"He has been captain of Lyon for the past five years and for every one of those five years they won the French title, so obviously he has a lot of Champions League experience.
"That's why we are hoping that everything goes okay with his medical and that we can agree a deal with his people because we believe he would be a terrific capture for us."

Sao Paulo star Josue contacted by Man City

Quote:
Manchester City's spending spree is far from over with another Brazilian set to follow Elano Blumer to Eastlands. Sao Paulo midfield star Josue is also a target for City boss Sven Goran Eriksson, with the Brazil international's sponsor, Omar Vasconcellos, confirming to Globoesporte that he had been contacted by an agent representing the big-spending Premiership club.
Josue lifted the Copa America last month with Brazil and along with City, also has Porto, Napoli and Benfica keen to bring him to Europe this summer.

Brazil will play Mexico in soccer exhibition in Foxborough
August 7, 2007

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- South American champion Brazil, the world's top-ranked national soccer team, will play Mexico in an exhibition game at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 12.

The game will be played on an official FIFA international fixture date, meaning Brazilian stars Ronaldinho, Kaka and Robinho are expected to be available. However, many players will have matches with their European clubs the following weekend and may ask to skip the exhibition.

Brazil won its second consecutive South American title on July 15 by stunning Argentina with a 3-0 victory in the final. It was the eighth Copa America championship for the Brazilians and their fourth in five tournaments.

"Brazil and Mexico are arguably the most popular national teams in the world," said Craig Tornberg, general manager of the New England Revolution, which is hosting the match. "What an incredible opportunity for our fans to experience the highest level of international soccer."

Also Tuesday, Brazil coach Dunga asked Ronaldinho and Kaka to join the national team for an exhibition game against Algeria on Aug. 22 in Montpellier, France. The two skipped the Copa America to rest after the European season.

"Our job is to do what is best for the national team," Dunga said. "We need to summon the players who we feel are the best for the team."

Dunga made other four changes from the squad that won the South American tournament in Venezuela, also adding goalkeeper Julio Cesar, defender Lucio, midfielder Lucas and forward Rafael Sobis. Among those not picked were Helton, Alex, Gilberto Silva, Anderson, Afonso and Fred.

Brazil also may also face Canada at a location and a date still to be determined.

Mexico also will play China on Oct. 17 in Los Angeles.

Romário

Quote:
Romário de Souza Faria (born January 29, 1966), better known simply as Romário, is a Brazilian legendary football center forward who helped the Brazil national team win the 1994 FIFA World Cup and has been one of the most prolific strikers in the world since the 1990s, having had successful tenures with European clubs PSV Eindhoven and FC Barcelona, and in Brazil with Vasco da Gama. His professional career has extended past age 40, an age by which most professional footballers have retired.
He is the third highest goalscorer in the history of the Brazilian team, as well as the second highest scorer of all time in the Brazilian League, in which he has finished as the top scorer six times. He was selected the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1994 and is catalogued as one of the greatest stars in the history of the game by FIFA.[4]
Romário was named as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers as part of FIFA's 100th anniversary celebration in March 2004.

Romario: I’ve done it all

Quote:
After a career spanning more than 20 years that has yielded, by his own calcuations, 1,000 goals, Brazilian legend Romario is preparing to hang up his scoring boots. One of the most charismatic players of his generation, the 41-year-old sharpshooter is keen to pursue new challenges, while staying involved with the beautiful game.O Baixinho (Shorty), currently a member of FIFA's Technical and Development Committee, was part of the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) delegation that visited FIFA headquarters on Tuesday to present their official candidature as hosts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. During his stay in Zurich, the Vasco striker spoke to FIFA.com about his footballing career, the current Brazilian national team, what it meant to score his 1,000th goal and his country's plans for 2014.
FIFA.com: Romario, the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014... How does that sound?
Romario:
Interesting. It would mean a great deal to our country, not only from a footballing point of view but from a political, economical and educational perspective too. We all hope that, from the moment FIFA decide the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil, a lot of things will change for the better. It's going to be very important for the Brazilian people as a whole. A World Cup in Brazil is really something.
When the talk turns to which Brazilian stadiums will be used to host the event, the ones that spring to mind are the Mineirao, the Morumbi and of course the Maracana. Even so, the CBF intend to construct four new stadiums in the north east and renovate grounds across the whole country. If these plans were implemented, would Brazil be totally ready to host the 2014 competition?
It's true that we've got a lot of stadiums in Brazil. Besides the Maracana, the Morumbi and the Mineirao, we've got many other football grounds in other regions. But there's still plenty of work and renovations needed, even at those three. In any case, we'd have seven years between now and 2014 to get everything done, and by that time the stadiums would be in perfect order to host the competition.

Fans of the Seleção werecelebrating another title success after July's Copa America. What did you make of the team's performance in Venezuela and which players caught your eye?Whenever Brazil win a competition, for us Brazilians it's always an excuse for a party. We have so many problems back home that it's not going too far to say that the Brazilian national team is one of the few things we can be happy about. The team in Venezuela wasn't our strongest side, because three of four key players weren't there, but it was a good team. I think that the two most outstanding players were Juan and Robinho. In my opinion they were the ones who put in the best performances.
The national team is now in the hands of your USA 1994-winning team-mate Dunga. Did you know back then that he was destined to become a coach and how do you feel his first year in the job has gone?
It's been a surprise, but a very pleasant one, to see Dunga in charge of the Seleção. Besides which it's a source of personal pride for me, because we played together in the national team for many years, as well as for Vasco da Gama. As a person, Dunga is very professional and has a strong personality. He's just starting out as a coach and has won his first official competition. He's a born winner and I think he's going to achieve many great things with the national side.
Brazil's success in Venezuela qualified them for the next FIFA Confederations Cup, which is a competition you made a great impact in back in 1997. While Brazil won the title in Saudi Arabia, the headlines went to the thrilling Ro-Ro attack. What made the partnership between you and Ronaldo so unstoppable during its short existence?
We've always got on well, especially out on the pitch. We had the opportunity and the honour to play alongside some very technically gifted, top-class footballers, and that made our job easier.

Ronaldo is one of several players you have formed memorable double acts with over the years, the others being Roberto Dinamite, Wim Kieft, Hristo Stoichkov, Bebeto, Sávio, Edmundo, Euller and Alex Dias - if you had to single one out as your ideal strike partner who would it be?
(Without hesitation) Bebeto. Together we won the 1994 World Cup, having helped Brazil qualify for that tournament. We won a Copa America and played many games together for Vasco da Gama. He was my finest accomplice out on the pitch because we knew each other so well. We had a near-telepathic understanding. That's why I'd choose Bebeto.
From dream partnerships let us now talk about to dream teams. An incessant topic of debate in your homeland is whether the Brazil side of 1958, 1970 or 1982 was superior. If you had to choose, which would you go for?
The only one I saw first-hand was the 1982 team. I never saw the 58 team play and I was just four at the time of the 70 side. From what I know and have heard from football experts, the 1970 side was the best Brazil team ever. I'll stick with that team and the likes of Pele, Rivelino, Jairzinho...
According to your own calculations, you scored your 1,000th goal in May 2007. It seemed as though the whole world was willing you on: Pele, Diego Maradona, Carlos Alberto Parreira, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Dunga, Edmundo, Thierry Henry, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho all urged you to reach the milestone. How did it feel to finally emulate Pele and accomplish the feat?
It's really quite moving to achieve something like reaching the 1,000-goal mark. Personally, and as a footballer, that was my life's greatest aim. I enjoyed the fact that people were following my attempt, which didn't just mean a lot to me but also to Vasco da Gama, to Brazil and to everybody. I'm the second person to achieve this feat and it's a real honour. I feel very happy. I feel 100-percent fulfilled, speaking as a footballer.
And what does the future hold for Romario, the player? To be honest, I've not got much of a future as a player (smiles). I've got a few games left in me; I'm not sure how many. I'm sure I'll carry on until December this year, when my contract with Vasco da Gama runs out. The thing is I've done it all as a player. I'm happy and now I have to get on with the rest of my life. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do (when I retire) but it will definitely be football-related.
Would you be interested in a move into coaching? No, no... not coaching. But I'm sure I'll carry on working within football.

Pelé

Quote:
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, KBE (born October 23rd 1940 in Três Corações, Brazil), best known by his nickname Pelé, is a former Brazilian football player. In his native Brazil, Pelé is hailed as a national hero for his accomplishments and contribution to the game,[2] in addition to being officially declared the football ambassador of the world by FIFA and a national treasure by the Brazilian government. He is also acknowledged for his vocal support of policies to improve the social conditions of the poor (when he scored his 1,000th goal he dedicated it to the poor children of Brazil). [3] During his career, he became known as "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol) or simply "The King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé). He was given the title of Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee[4] and received a FIFA award for best footballer of the 20th century, after being voted by the members of the football comition of the FIFA in 2000, to choose the best football player of all time. He is also a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Spotted by the renowned football star, Medardo 'Lalo' Olea, Pelé began playing for Santos Futebol Clube at just 15, his national team at 16, and won his first World Cup at 17. Despite numerous offers from European clubs, he stayed loyal to his club, remaining with them for two decades until his semi-retirement in 1975. Pelé played as an inside forward, striker, and what later became known as the playmaker position. Pelé's technique and natural athleticism have been universally praised; he was renowned for his unstoppable dribbling and visionary passing, as well as his pace, powerful shot, and an exceptional heading ability, but above all he was an exceptionally prolific goalscorer.
He is the all-time top scorer in the history of the Brazil national team and is the only footballer to be a part of three World Cup-winning teams (it should be noted that though he was named part of the 1962 squad, he was injured and did not receive a winner's medal).
Since his full retirement in 1977 Pelé has been an ambassador for football and has also undertaken various acting roles and commercial ventures.

judge says: no gays in brasil soccer

In a macho sport, an uproar over gays and soccer in Brazil
By TALES AZZONI, Associated Press Writer
August 14, 2007

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- The director of a prominent soccer team insinuates on national television that a player on a rival team is gay. The player sues for slander and goes on TV to deny it. A judge causes an uproar by saying gays don't belong in Brazilian soccer.

With a narrative like a Latin American soap opera, the flap over the sexual orientation of Sao Paulo midfielder Richarlyson has shaken the hallowed and macho institution of Brazilian soccer.

The commotion started in June when Palmeiras club director Jose Cyrillo Junior was asked on TV whether it was true that a soccer player from his team was negotiating for an exclusive television interview to announce he was gay.

Cyrillo denied the report, but added "Richarlyson 'almost' played for Palmeiras," suggesting the 24-year-old player was gay.

Cyrillo later apologized, but Richarlyson -- whose father played professionally and whose brother played in Portugal and is now with Brazil's Cruzeiro -- filed a criminal complaint for slander.

Judge Manoel Maximiano Junqueira Filho stoked the dispute by dismissing Richarlyson's claim and issuing a ruling that suggested he leave the game if he were gay. If he weren't, the judge said, Richarlyson was obliged to defend himself on the same TV program.

"Not that a homosexual can't play soccer," Filho wrote. "He can, but he must form his own team and federation, setting up matches with those who want to play against him."

The judge concluded it is not "reasonable to accept homosexuals in Brazilian soccer because it would hurt the uniformity present" in team sport. Soccer, the judge said, is a "virile game" but "not homosexual," and allowing gays could lead to affirmative action for the sport requiring quotas of gays.

The ruling prompted the government body that oversees judicial ethics in Brazil to demand an explanation from the judge, who has until Friday to respond.

The judge, who did not respond to repeated requests for interviews, abruptly voided his initial ruling last week, saying a different court has jurisdiction. Then he took a leave of absence beginning Monday with no date for a return.

Gay rights groups were outraged but said the controversy has forced the issue into the open in a country where gays generally are tolerated, but usually not in soccer and often ridiculed.

"It was a fascist statement and (the judge) needs to pay for it," said Marcelo Cerqueira, president of the Grupo Gay da Bahia.

He said there are several gays in Brazil's pro league, but they fear disclosing their sexual orientation over losing their jobs.

"This case is important to uncover the issue about gays in soccer, to create debate," Cerqueira said.

There have been no public declarations of homosexuality by Brazilian league players. Some well-known players have posed nude in gay magazines, but none acknowledged being gay. Among them were World Cup veteran Vampeta, former Sao Paulo goalkeeper Roger and, most recently, Vitoria goalkeeper Rafael Cordova.

Cordova said there are gays in the Brazilian league, and he sympathizes with their situation. But after the announcement that he will appear naked in an upcoming issue of Brazil's "G Magazine," many fans vilified him even though he says he is heterosexual.

"The fans want me fired," Cordova told Veja newsmagazine last week. "We lost three matches in a row and who do you think they are putting the blame on?"

The judge's pronouncement surprised some accustomed to the sport's masculine ethos.

"Soccer is a macho sport anywhere in the world, but we know there are homosexual players, just like there are homosexuals in other professions," columnist and TV commentator Antero Greco said. "But sexual orientation should never be a problem as long as the person is competent at what he or she does."

Richarlyson, who has played for four Brazilian clubs and with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, declined for months to say whether he was gay. Finally, he went on Brazil's most popular weekly news and entertainment program to say he is heterosexual.

"If I was (gay), I wouldn't have any problems admitting it," he said on the Fantastico TV program Sunday night.

Richarlyson Barbosa Felisbino -- like many Brazilian soccer players he goes by one name -- has been a pro player for nine years. He was signed by Sao Paulo in 2005 after failed negotiations with Palmeiras.

The player's lawyer said he believes the public began doubting Richarlyson's sexual orientation after he celebrated a goal against Palmeiras by dancing on the sidelines. Palmeiras fans jeered him since.

Richarlyson doesn't mind that, but he is unwilling to accept insults from a judge.

"This is a disrespect not only to me, it's a disrespect to Brazil," Richarlyson said. "All that matters is if the player can do his job on the field."
