"Please refrain from making any noise during the practice,'' the Toyota Park public-address announcer said, citing a request from the Selecao, as Brazil's team is known. Quiet? In soccer? Brazil, usually serenaded by samba drums from its festive fans, figures to make plenty of noise Sunday, when it plays the United States in an exhibition game at Solider Field. With Ronaldinho, Kaka and Robinho, the five-time World Cup champions are the planet's top-ranked team, famed for joga bonito - beautiful play. One year after the Americans flopped out of the World Cup in the first round, the Brazilians figure to be a top test for the U.S. team to measure itself nine months before the first U.S. qualifier for the 2010 tournament in South Africa. "Ronaldinho and Kaka are maybe the two best players in the world. But it doesn't matter,'' said U.S. forward Landon Donovan, transitioning from phenom into a team leader. "When we're on the field, it's time to play, and it can be anybody. You have to assume that everybody takes it as if they're playing Joe Schmoe from whatever team they're playing in their league.'' Ronaldinho, his long hair pulled up in a bob, drew the biggest cheers during practice - which cost $20 to attend (cheap compared to game tickets, which sell for $40-$250). FIFA's player of the year in 2004 and 2005, Ronaldinho stars for Barcelona in Spain. Kaka, a favorite to win the FIFA award for the first time this year, was the leading scorer for AC Milan en route to this year's European Champions League title. It's not just another friendly. "I've played against Kaka like six times, Ronaldinho a couple of times,'' American midfielder DaMarcus Beasley said. "It will be good for our younger players to see how a team like this will be. We have a lot of guys on our team that don't have much experience. There definitely will be experience in this game.'' Beasley faced Kaka in the Champions League, and the two have become friends. Kaka thinks the 17th-ranked U.S. team is getting better. "I saw a lot of American players, especially the ones that are playing in Europe. They grew a lot,'' he said. "I rank them good players.'' Ronaldinho went a little further. "They are on the right path and I believe in the future it's a country that's going to have a soccer with a very high level,'' he said. The United States has beaten Brazil only once in 11 tries - 1-0 in 1998 Gold Cup match in Los Angeles. With many of its players flying in from European clubs, the Brazilians had just the Saturday practice - then again, Brazil is a nomadic nation between World Cups. It is in the midst of a streak of 28 consecutive road international games that began after its last World Cup qualifier in October 2005 and won't end until Oct. 20, its first home qualifier for the 2010 tournament. One of Brazil's top young players is Vagner Love, a 23-year-old who plays for CSKA Moscow. His real name is Vagner Silva de Souza, but he got his nickname - nearly all Brazilian players go by nicknames - because of a romantic evening that broke team rules. "There was a little problem I had in Sao Paulo when I played for the Palmeiras team the night before a match. I went out with a woman, and they found out, and that's how I got this nickname,'' he said. "In the beginning, I didn't like it, but then I got used to it and now it doesn't bother me any more. Now, I think it's OK and everybody likes my name, `Love.''' Ronaldinho, a diamond glittering from his left ear lobe, remains the undisputed star, expected to carry Brazil to its sixth World Cup title in 2010 after the nation's embarrassing quarterfinal loss to France in Germany last year. "He has a lot of pressure and he has to learn to perform under this pressure,'' Brazil coach Dunga said. "It's like Michael Jordan . Who would go to a game to watch Michael Jordan do nothing?'' |
