Why didn't he play in the beginning of the season with Chelsea, not even on the bench? I rather see Belletti in the right back position more than Paolo. It looks like it will be like last season. Play as a super sub and being the 4th option. Why does he stay if there's too much competition? I hope it's not for the money. :PF: team needs a match-fit right back alternative on the bench and if he doesn't play often at Chelsea well...

I thought it was surprising that he didn't play with Chelsea in the Premiership & bam he's in the starting line-up with Portugal against Serbia at Alvalade. Just like Hilario, I think he won't be in the starting line-up too often with Chelsea this season. Belletti & Bridge will be the 1st & 2nd options. I think he might leave Chelsea before the end of the season. I wonder if he goes wherever Jose ends up.

Paulo Ferreira admits Mourinho departure was tough to take

But defender regains confidence under new coach Grant

Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira admits that Jose Mourinho’s departure from the club was a shock, but says that the backing he has received from new manager Avraham Grant has helped his confidence.

Ferreira worked under Mourinho for over five years, having followed his mentor from Porto to Stamford Bridge in 2004. However, the Portuguese boss had relied less on the full-back towards the end of his reign with the Blues, with Ferreira often left out of match squads last season.

New boss Grant, hired immediately after Mourinho left, has given early signs that Ferreira could be set for more appearances this season after using the 28-year-old in both of the team’s recent crunch matches with Manchester United and Valencia.

“Yes it’s true, it’s good for me as well because I wasn’t playing too much and now it’s given me confidence. I need to play and I’m happy for that. I hope to keep playing like this,” Ferreira told Chelseafc.com.

“He (Grant) has spoken to the defenders, we just have to do our jobs, try to not concede goals, it’s more important. I was an attacking defender but that was in Portugal, where the Championship is not so strong.

“I learned that you cannot just go forward; you have to first of all think as a defender. Defend first and then attack when you have to. When I have to go I go, and when you have to stay you stay. You have to feel the game.

“Mourinho’s departure? Nobody expected it. It was difficult for us, for me especially. He brought me to Porto and I came with him from there, so it’s a lot of years with the same manager. It was difficult, but what can I say? Life goes on and you have to keep working and do your best.”

Ferreira just play often at another club

Del Piero-
so what do you think? Is Grant really going to use Ferreira more often?

I think Grant wants to do things his way and disassociate himself from Mourinho as much as he can. I guess he's going to use Belletti more on the right. Ferreira- I think needs to play more often at a club, because in the selecao he's not brilliant.

Blues Rocked By Ferreira Injury
Chelsea were dealt a blow today as news came back that defender Paulo Ferreira will be sidelined for up to six weeks with an ankle injury.

The Portugal international strained ligaments in his ankle during Chelsea's 4-3 win over Leicester City in the Carling Cup, and is not expected back until early December at the least.

Frenchman Florent Malouda quickly replaced the stricken fullback on Wednesday night, but it is not known whether the summer signing will continue there in the long-term.

With John Terry and Ashley Cole also injured, Chelsea's defence is stretched, but manager Avram Grant feels he has enough options at his disposal.

"Ashley and John Terry are improving quicker than we thought," said Grant.

"Ashley may be available next week, JT will take longer, but we need to wait and see how they will cope.

"Paulo Ferreira is not available and will be out for five to six weeks.

"We are short, but we have a big squad and we have good players to replace him, as we have had with John and Ashley.

who's going to be left back for Portugal? Abel from Sporting? Who?

here's what I said when I heard he's injured
Oh my gosh Now who's going to be left back for Portugal? Abel from Sporting? Who? He wasn't that great anyway. Fellaini's goal and other 2 were because he didn't stop them. Should he still be in the starting lineup for SColari? I don't think so. You?

Grant defiant as Carvalho joins Chelsea soccer crocks

Written by: AFP

Avram Grant has insisted that Chelsea´s bid to get back into the title race will not be derailed by an injury list which has been lengthened to include Ricardo Carvalho, seen here,

LONDON (AFP) - Avram Grant has insisted that Chelsea's bid to get back into the title race will not be derailed by an injury list which has been lengthened to include Ricardo Carvalho.

Chelsea, already without goalkeeper Petr Cech, captain John Terry and Paulo Ferreira, lost the Portuguese centre-back during the first half of their 1-1 draw with Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Carvalho was due to have a scan on the back injury, sustained as he challenged Everton forward Ayegbeni Yakubu for a high ball, and, despite his defiant message, Grant knows he can ill afford to be without one half of his first-choice defensive partnership.

The Israeli acknowledged: "We have too many injuries at the moment, and it is not easy to play without key players like Terry and Cech, as well as Paulo Ferreira.

"But this is why we have a big squad. We have players who can come in and replace those who are injured."

Grant's team were denied a fifth consecutive Premier League victory by a superb overhead-kick in the 89th minute by Everton’s Australian midfielder Tim Cahill - a setback that means they now trail champions Manchester United by five points.

Cahill has returned to the Everton team only recently after a foot injury, but he has already scored three times - in the UEFA Cup against Larissa, in the League Cup against Luton, and now in the Premier League to clinch a crucial point for his team.

Didier Drogba had given Chelsea the lead in the 70th minute with a near-post header, and David Moyes, the Everton manager, is well aware of Cahill’s importance to his team.

Cahill signed a new five-year contract with Everton during the summer, and Moyes acknowledged that persuading the Australia star to put pen to paper was one of the finest achievements of his reign at Goodison Park.

Moyes said: "Tim Cahill’s goal showed what he is all about. He is a player who will always score goals.

"It was a fantastic finish, and one which required great athleticism. He has all the qualities needed to be successful when he is near the goal, and he is so crucial for us.

"Persuading Tim to sign a new deal was one of my most important acts as Everton manager - as it was to get midfielder Mikel Arteta and forward Andy Johnson to sign long-term contracts.

"All three of those players will hopefully be with us for years to come. We are building a good group here at Everton."

After taking over from Jose Mourinho in September, Grant vowed to create a Chelsea team that placed more emphasis on attacking flair than that of his predecessor.

They had plenty of chances to score against Everton, but Grant's team found the American goalkeeper Tim Howard in magnificent form, and Drogba - although he scored the goal - was not as ruthless as he usually is.

Grant said: "When a team wants to play attacking football, it is normal that they will try to score the second and third goals after they have scored the first.

"I wasn’t happy with the result against Everton, but I was happy with the football we played."

Drogba's seventh goal of the season was followed by an exuberant celebration from a forward who, only a month ago, had declared his intention to quit the club in search of a new challenge.

Grant revealed that he had yet to hear anything directly from Drogba about his future plans.

"I see Drogba play with a lot of passion, and he scored a good goal today. It is important what he says to me. He didn't say anything to me about leaving."

The upcoming two-week domestic break for internationals gives Chelsea and their Premier League rivals the chance to regroup, and Grant is convinced his team will return in rejuvenated form for their match against bottom side Derby County on November 24.

He said: "I am sure that when we come back, we will quickly start to play the good football that we have managed to play in our recent matches."Grant defiant as Carvalho joins Chelsea soccer crocks

Anyone can tell me what they think of Ferreira's performances?

Anyone can tell me what they think of Ferreira's performances? Now Grant has the same luck that MOurinho had- need a central defender- will Roman buy Grant one?

Carvalho's always injured. He hasn't event played much. I hope he makes it to the 2 qualifying games for la Selecao. They were doing so great when he came back.
