Barnes hits out at booing of Chelsea's Lampard

Former Liverpool and Newcastle star John Barnes has hit out at England fans booing Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

Barnes, who was booed during his career with the national side, told BBC Radio 5live's Sportsweek: "It is just wrong.

"This is not a healthy situation either for Frank or for the team. It doesn't help him or the other players."

Barnes added: "Frank is an England player and we all want England to do well, the problem is this sort of thing does transmit to the rest of the side.

"As much as the other players will be happy they are not the ones being booed, it is not a positive situation for any of them.

"Having been someone who has been through that situation where you have been singled out by England fans, it's not a good situation to be in."

McClaren can't understand booing for Chelsea's Lampard

England boss Steve McClaren is confident Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will win over fans.

Lampard has become a regular target of abuse for England fans at Wembley and jeers rang round a capacity crowd on Saturday when Lampard was introduced for Michael Owen during the second-half of the 3-0 win over Estonia.

Although the 29-year-old has shown no sign of being affected by the adverse reaction towards him, McClaren is at a loss to understand why it is happening.

"I honestly do not know why the crowd boo Frank Lampard," he said. "I have no answers.

"Two years ago he was voted the fans' player of the year two years in a row and when you look at the three games against Brazil, Estonia away and Germany, he was our best player."

McClaren has been the subject of fan derision plenty of times during his short time in charge, notably in Barcelona last March when England struggled to wear down the part-timers of Andorra.

Having presided over a run of five successive qualifying wins that has taken England to the brink of a place in next summer's European Championship finals, McClaren is understandably keen not to antagonise the supporters he now appears to be winning round.

Instead, he is calling on Lampard to come through his problems and continue to prove his worth to England on the pitch.

"No-one likes being criticised and booed," said McClaren.

"I wouldn't want it at a club and I don't want it at international level either.

"We have talked about it but I don't think it has affected him.

"He just has to get on with it. All I am concerned about are his performances on the field. It is not about who is criticising him or booing him."

McClaren goes with Chelsea's Lampard for England clash

England boss Steve McClaren will go with Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard for Wednesday night's Euro2008 qualifier in Russia.

But left-back Ashley Cole will miss out due to the ankle ligament injury he picked up near the end of Saturday's 3-0 win against Estonia.

Midfielder Lamps is in line to return for the Group E qualifier in Moscow as the Three Lions are likely to switch to a 4-3-3 formation.

That will see Lampard and Steven Gerrard playing either side of Gareth Barry, who will anchor the midfield.

It could prove the best-possible boost for Lamps - who suffered jeers from a large section of the crowd when he came on as a sub at the weekend.

Defender John Terry is determined to play, despite still having a knee problem. A source close to the skipper told The Sun: "John feels fine at the moment. He does not want to miss such an important game."

Venables blasts England booing for Chelsea's Lampard

England assistant boss Terry Venables can't believe fans booing Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

Venables said: "What are people trying to do to Frank? What are these personal feelings all about? The whole country wants us in those finals but booing one of our own players like that is hardly going to help.

"Were they Estonian supporters in disguise? Don't they realise they are upsetting the whole situation? Frank's last three full games for England have been as good as any player yet he's still getting stick.

"It's really ugly and it's got to stop.

"To me, Frank has shown a lot of guts in dealing with it. I don't know if it concerns him but it's made him into a stronger character.

"We had an amazing crowd on Saturday of nearly 87,000 and there's about 1,000 letting everybody down.

"It's absolutely appalling and must not carry on to big nights like we have in Russia on Wednesday.

"It happened to David Bentley and Phil Neville but no one seems to get it quite as much as Frank.

"These so-called fans are making the game easier for all our rivals."

Lamp's is back..

Great performance against Man city, some of the passes he made were top class, one was definately the pass of the season, nice to see him show all the England fans who doubted him, how good he is.

Hopefully he can carry on his form and prove to all the England fans he deserves to be starting for England every game. Tbh i think its time we gave Lampard and Barry a start, as Gerrard hasnt been playing well for England, so I think its time to change our starting line up, whether or not it is a gamble leaving out Gerrard.

Id give Hargreaves a while before starting him for England, but when he's up to scratch at Man u, also give him a try with England.

Has played brilliant his last two matches against Wigan and against Man City.

Though there was no goal for him in the slaughter of Man City, I believe that he made the passes that counted most and really has shown great leadership for Chelsea with no John Terry in the Line-up.

Chelsea's Lampard denies Terry bust-up

Frank Lampard has rubbished rumours of a fall-out with Chelsea team-mate John Terry.

Following Jose Mourinho's departure as Blues manager in September, there were claims of a rift between Lampard and captain Terry.

"I have heard the rumours and sniping about me and JT," Lampard told the News of the World.

"How we have fallen out and don't speak any more. How Mourinho's departure has come between us. But it's just rubbish.

"It's people trying to manufacture a split where there isn't one. As far as me and JT - we have a great working relationship and a great friendship.

"There's been no fall-out and we both agree it's time for everyone to stand up and be counted, to stand together."

Chelsea's Lampard still fears England fans backlash

Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard fears the Wembley crowd could still turn on the hosts during Wednesday's Euro2008 qualifier against Croatia.

Players and management were expecting to be greeted with a hostile reception on Wednesday had England's Euro 2008 dream gone up in smoke on Saturday night.

But sensational victories for Israel and Macedonia over Russia and Croatia, respectively, have transformed the fortunes of Steve McClaren's side to such an extent that the crowd now appear set to get right behind the team.

Chelsea midfielder Lampard, no stranger to the boo boys for both club and country, realises he and his team-mates were a post's width away - literally in the case of Russia - from suffering abuse.

He said in the News of the World: "The fans would have wanted to vent their frustration and we, as players, would have had to accept that.

"But we are professionals. We must always stand tall, hold our heads up, take the flak and walk through it.

"Yes, it would be a massive test of our character but we must face it and come through it. Obviously it will be difficult.

"No-one ever wants to be booed or abused. But we know that in the current climate it's a situation that's impossible to ignore.

"There was a very real prospect we'd be walking out on Wednesday night in front of 90,000 England fans who wanted to vent their anger and disappointment.

"There's still the chance that the mood of the England crowd will change if we don't get the result we want, that we need against Croatia.

"So we must be ready to take it and deal with it."

Lampard added: "I have endured a lot of abuse in my time.

"First when I was at West Ham and now that I am at Chelsea.

"I have developed a thick skin and I can deal with it now. It just doesn't sting me anymore like it did in my early years. But it will hurt me if the Wembley crowd turns against us.

"We have the best fans in the world and if they get behind us they can make a huge difference.

"Having said that, if we don't get through then a lot of people are going to complain, will want to have a go and we must be big and brave enough to accept it."

Lampard ruled out for several weeks with thigh injury

Written by: AFP

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, seen here 23 December 2007, will be out of action for several weeks after scans revealed he has suffered a torn thigh muscle.

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will be out of action for several weeks after scans revealed he has suffered a torn thigh muscle.

Lampard, 29, sustained the injury in the first half of his side's 4-4 draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The England midfielder is likely to be back in late January but his absence is another blow for Chelsea manager Avram Grant, who is already without John Terry, Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda.

"Scans have revealed a tear in Frank Lampard's right thigh," a Chelsea statement confirmed. "The tear is not in the same leg that Frank injured earlier this season.

"He will begin his rehabilitation immediately and we hope to have him back playing within a few weeks."

On top of those injuries, Drogba, Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel and Salomon Kalou are set to miss a month's action on African Nations Cup duty in the New Year.

Grant had already been weighing up potential signings and he admits he will definitely have to move into the transfer market to bolster a severely-depleted squad.

"I was hoping to use the transfer window but now, because of the suspensions and injuries, as well as the African Cup, I must think about using it more," Grant said.
