Frank Lampard has given Jose Mourinho and Steve McClaren a major injury headache after tearing his left thigh in training.

The Chelsea midfielder suffered the injury at the end of Friday's training session and was sent to hospital where a scan revealed the full extent of the problem.

The 29-year-old is certain to miss Sunday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa and a major question mark hangs over whether he will be fit for England's crucial Euro 2008 double-header.

McClaren's men are up against Israel at Wembley on 8th September before taking on Russia four days later.

Doubt

David Beckham has already been ruled out of McClaren's plans with a knee injury while Steven Gerrard is still troubled by a fractured toe, although he is in the 26-man squad.

And with Lampard now a doubt, that could leave the England boss without three of his four first-choice midfielders for the two vital qualifiers.

A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Chelsea can confirm that Frank Lampard was injured in training and a scan has revealed that he has a tear in his left thigh.

"It is too early to say how long the injury will keep him from playing."

Avram Grant hopes Chelsea trio Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho will be back within a fortnight.

Lampard has not played for The Blues since scoring the only goal against Portsmouth late last month due to a thigh injury, while Carvalho has been out since mid-August with an ankle problem.
Star striker Drogba has been struggling with a knee injury, with reports suggesting the Ivory Coast international is reluctant to play until he is 100 per cent fit.

All three players are now back in training and new Chelsea boss Grant hopes the troika will soon be involved his plans.
"Didier started training yesterday, one week before we expected," said Grant on Sky Sports News. "Ricardo Carvalho was training today and also a few days before Frank Lampard.

Good news

"They are doing very well and I expect to see them very soon in the team and I can only say good things about their attitude.
"They want to play as soon as possible, and we want them too, we need them.
"We will wait a few days to see how they train, but I think in one or two weeks we can expect all of them to be back on the pitch. It's good news."
Grant also insists there have been no issues with any members of the Chelsea squad since he replaced Jose Mourinho as manager last week.

Proud

The Israeli added: "I have to say I'm very, very happy from the attitude, even from the injured players. They all want to play.
"I can only judge the players by actions, or by the way they speak to me. What they speak to me is through their actions on Sunday and off the pitch in training.
"I think Chelsea can be proud. They are very professional, have a good attitude and I don't see even one problem until now."

Drogba: Back

Chelsea manager Avram Grant has given a positive update on striker Didier Drogba's fitness.
Drogba has been struggling with a knee injury this season and has not played since the defeat at Aston Villa at the start of September.
But Chelsea are expected to be boosted by the Ivory Coast international's return to action against Fulham on Saturday.
"We will check the players this afternoon and tomorrow to make sure that everything is okay but probably Didier will be back," Grant said on Sky Sports News.
"As a manager I want all the players to be available for the game and I'm very happy that Didier is the first one to come back."

Close

Midfielder Frank Lampard and defender Ricardo Carvalho have also been sidelined this month with thigh and ankle injuries respectively.
Grant has confirmed both players are ahead of schedule and are very close to making their comebacks.
"Frank not yet, but he is almost. (Ricardo) A few more days and he will be okay," Grant continued.

Winning ways

Chelsea are without a Premier League win all month having lost twice and drawn at home against Blackburn in the league.
The Blues host local rivals Fulham this weekend, and Grant said: "We need to get back to winning, for us it's been a long time.
"The fans are all behind the team and I hope to give them reasons to continue."
Chelsea play their first home game since Jose Mourinho's exit and Grant's appointment on Saturday.
Mourinho had an almost flawless record at Stamford Bride and the former Israel coach hopes to continue the Portuguese tactician's miraculous run.
"The record at home is a good one. It's a pressure that I like, it's pressure that pushes you to be at your best. It's a good record, I respect it and I want to continue it," he added.

If Drogba is back or not, doesn't make any difference.

As Predrag Mijatovic said "Drogba is too old, we are looking for yoinger players"

Henk ten Cate[Assistant Coach]

Ajax have announced they have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the release of Henk ten Cate.

The Ajax coach has been consistently linked with a role on Chelsea manager Avram Grant's coaching staff.

Ten Cate confirmed on Sunday that Ajax were in talks with Chelsea and an agreement has now been reached.

Chelsea have been keen to bolster their coaching staff since Grant took the Stamford Bridge reins following the departure of former boss Jose Mourinho.

Contract

Ajax are now expected to release Ten Cate from his contract at the Amsterdam Arena in order to allow him to join Chelsea.

A statement on Ajax's official website said: "Following talks with Chelsea, Ajax have agreed the direct transfer of Henk ten Cate to Chelsea.

"Last week, Ten Cate informed the club he wanted us to negotiate with Chelsea after he had been approached personally.

"Ajax discussed it internally and it's now up to Chelsea and Henk ten Cate to finalise the deal together. Ajax do not expect this to take much time."

Chelsea agree deal for Ajax coach Ten Cate

Chelsea have agreed terms with former Ajax coach Henk ten Cate.

BBC Sport says Chelsea have reached agreement with Ajax for the release of Ten Cate and expect to appoint him as new boss Avram Grant's assistant on Friday.

Ajax had already given Chelsea permission to open talks with the 52-year-old Dutchman.

He was formerly assistant to Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard and helped the Catalan club win the Champions League and Spanish title in 2006.

Coach Steve Clarke is also in talks to sign a new contract at Chelsea.

An Ajax statement said earlier this week: "Ajax have reached agreement with the English club about the immediate transfer of Henk ten Cate to Chelsea.

"After being approached by Chelsea, Henk ten Cate asked the Ajax management last week for permission to start negotiations with the Premier League side.

"After internal deliberations, Ajax granted permission."

Chelsea's Mancienne on way back at QPR

Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne hopes to be back in action in the near future following a six-week injury lay-off.

On-loan at QPR, the youngster has been sidelined with back and hamstring problems, but Rangers are hopeful he will be able to resume training next week.

"He's doing really well. He's working hard with the fitness coach and, all being well, he'll resume training with the rest of the first-team squad early next week," said physio Paul Hunter.

"We have worked very closely with the medical staff at Chelsea and Michael has spent some time over at Cobham (Chelsea's training ground), which has been a big help."

GARETH BARRY has been given the nod ahead of Frank Lampard for Saturday’s tie with Estonia.

England boss Steve McClaren is set to give Barry the chance to continue his excellent form in midfield — despite Lamps being back to fitness.

McClaren oversaw a training session yesterday where Aston Villa skipper Barry played alongside his close pal Steven Gerrard in the middle.

Chelsea star Lamps, 29, has played just 90 minutes against Bolton in the last six weeks.

Barry, 26, stole the show after stepping in for the crocked Stamford Bridge man during last month’s 3-0 defeats of Israel and Russia.

And he said: “I’m happy the manager is thinking about me alongside some great players.

“I know I can do the same job as in the last two games — and the manager knows it, too.

“Last month’s qualifiers at Wembley were the biggest games of my career.

“Playing in Moscow would be even bigger, considering what’s at stake, so I want to play.”

Barry admitted his life has been turned on its head since he proved he is the perfect midfield partner for Gerrard.

The Villa star said: “There was a time when I’d virtually given up hope of playing for England again.

“I made my debut with Steven in 2000 but then there were two or three years when I didn’t make the squad.

“No one ever told me what I was doing wrong, or what I needed to improve.

“But when your name’s not even being mentioned for so long you do sort of give up hope. But the change of England manager last year made me believe my chance might come again.”

And Barry believes the turning point in his career came when Martin O’Neill took charge at Villa in August 2006 and moved him to central midfield in April.

He added: “Martin said to me ‘If you stay with me you’ll improve as a player and get your England recall’. And he’s been proved right, which shows what a clever manager he is.

“Around that time I was wondering whether it might be better for my career to move on.

“When I heard Martin was coming it got me thinking it would be better to stick around.

“My aim at the start of the season was to get back into the England squad.

“But I want to make more of my England career and I’m confident I can do that.”

SOL CAMPBELL will be pitched into action against Estonia on Saturday.

The Portsmouth defender, 33, wins his 70th cap because John Terry is rested — as we exclusively revealed last weekend.

It will be Campbell’s first England appearance since the 2006 World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Portugal.

Terry is just one booking away from a ban ruling him out of Wednesday’s trip to Russia.

It also gives the Chelsea star a chance to recover from his fractured cheekbone — which has forced him to play two games for the Blues wearing a protective mask.

Reading’s Nicky Shorey is another likely starter as left-back Ashley Cole would also miss the trip to Moscow if he is booked.

Estonia have a doubt over keeper Mart Poom.

The Watford stopper, 35, has injured back muscles — but is desperate to play at Wembley.

Estonia coach Viggo Jensen said: “Poom has a problem but he wants to play at the new Wembley.

“We will not take a decision until the very last minute.”

Chelsea ~ General Chat & Latest News

Frank Rijkaard has dismissed speculation that he could leave Barcelona to team up with his former assistant Henk ten Cate at Chelsea.

The Dutchman was linked with a move to the Blues after his compatriot joined the coaching staff at Stamford Bridge this week, but he has refuted all the rumours.
Following the exit of Jose Mourinho, rumours have continued to circulate as to who his long-term successor will be and Rijkaard's name has been claimed to be on the top of the list.
Avram Grant is currently in charge, but is not expected to keep the post once the Blues identify a world class coach to take over.
The style of play that Rijkaard has produced at Barca is what Roman Abramovich is said to want at Chelsea and he has brought in Ten Cate to unlock some of the secrets.
One certainty though, according to the Blaugrana boss, is that he will not be leaving the Catalan giants any time soon.

Going nowhere

"I have nothing to do with Ten Cate signing for Chelsea," Rijkaard told Marca. "I have nothing to do with this news.
"I am the coach of Barcelona and I am thinking about nothing else."

Paulo Ferreira admits Mourinho departure was tough to take

But defender regains confidence under new coach Grant

Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira admits that Jose Mourinho’s departure from the club was a shock, but says that the backing he has received from new manager Avraham Grant has helped his confidence.

Ferreira worked under Mourinho for over five years, having followed his mentor from Porto to Stamford Bridge in 2004. However, the Portuguese boss had relied less on the full-back towards the end of his reign with the Blues, with Ferreira often left out of match squads last season.

New boss Grant, hired immediately after Mourinho left, has given early signs that Ferreira could be set for more appearances this season after using the 28-year-old in both of the team’s recent crunch matches with Manchester United and Valencia.

“Yes it’s true, it’s good for me as well because I wasn’t playing too much and now it’s given me confidence. I need to play and I’m happy for that. I hope to keep playing like this,” Ferreira told Chelseafc.com.

“He (Grant) has spoken to the defenders, we just have to do our jobs, try to not concede goals, it’s more important. I was an attacking defender but that was in Portugal, where the Championship is not so strong.

“I learned that you cannot just go forward; you have to first of all think as a defender. Defend first and then attack when you have to. When I have to go I go, and when you have to stay you stay. You have to feel the game.

“Mourinho’s departure? Nobody expected it. It was difficult for us, for me especially. He brought me to Porto and I came with him from there, so it’s a lot of years with the same manager. It was difficult, but what can I say? Life goes on and you have to keep working and do your best.”
