2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONCACAF)

The CONCACAF qualifying stage for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification in South Africa will see 35 nations competing for 3.5 berths in the qualification. The fourth place finisher will play a two game playoff with the CONMEBOL fifth place finisher.

The proposed CONCACAF qualification process is identical to that for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.[2], except that as Puerto Rico will be competing this time (they were the only CONCACAF member not to enter 2006 qualification), there will be 11 matches instead of 10 in the first preliminary round, and thus 13 teams instead of 14 will receive a bye to the second preliminary round. The two preliminary rounds (likely to occur in the first half of 2008) will reduce the 35 entrants to 24 and then 12 teams, followed by 3 semifinal groups of 4 (likely to occur in the second half of 2008). The top two in each semifinal group will advance to a final 6-team group (timeframe of all of 2009). The top 3 teams from the final group will qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The 4th place team will compete in a home-and-home playoff against the fifth-place team from CONMEBOL.

The teams ranked 14th–24th in the CONCACAF region by the FIFA World Ranking of May 2007 will be drawn against the teams ranked 25th–35th in the 1st preliminary round.

The draw will take place on November 25, 2007 in Durban, South Africa.

In the 2nd round, the 13 top-ranked CONCACAF teams from the May 2007 FIFA World Ranking will join 11 winners from the 1st Round.

Hahha. Most of the teams in here are not too good except Mexico and the US.

Honduras is good (and for me to say that hurts becuase they are our biggest rivals next to Mexico) . They have players like Ivan Guerrero, Amado Guevara and the star of that team (he plays for Inter Milan in Italy) David Suazo. But yeah most of the teams in this area aren't too good....Hope we can make the WC lol...

US announces World Cup semifinal home sites

CHICAGO (AP)—The United States plans to play its home games in the semifinals of World Cup qualifying in Washington and suburban Chicago and Denver.

The Americans, who had a first-round bye, meet Barbados in the second round, playing the total-goals series in Carson, Calif., on June 15 and at the Caribbean nation seven days later.

If the United States advances, it would open the semifinals Aug. 20 at Guatemala or St. Lucia, then play at Cuba or Antigua and Barbuda on Sept. 6. The Americans’ first home match would be Sept. 10 at Bridgeview, Ill., against Trinidad and Tobago or Bermuda.

The U.S. team would host the Cuba-Antigua and Barbuda winner Oct. 11 at Washington, then play at the T&T-Bermuda winner on Oct. 15. The home game against the Guatemala-St. Lucia winner would be Nov. 19 at Commerce City, Colo.


The top two teams in the group advance to the six-nation finals of the North and Central American and Caribbean region. Three teams from the finals qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and the No. 4 team goes to a playoff against the No. 5 team from South America.

To prepare for the start of qualifying, the U.S. team has exhibition games at England (May 28), at Spain (June 4) and against Argentina at East Rutherford, N.J. (June 8).
