DERBY, England (AFP) - Derby County slid closer to a quick return to the Championship after a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday condemned them to a seventh successive Premiership defeat.

Turkish international Tuncay Sanli scored his third goal in as many games as Boro followed up their shock win over Arsenal last weekend with another three points to ease their own relegation fears.

Derby have just six points and are already eight points from safety.

Saturday's game was the first home match at Pride Park in charge for new manager Paul Jewell but he knows he has plenty of work to do if he is to perform the same miracles he has achieved in the past when he kept Wigan and Bradford in the top flight.

Tuncay's 38th-minute volley proved decisive for Boro while Derby had a luckless day seeing Kenny Miller hit the post.

After the break, the Rams had two penalty appeals turned down while George Boateng also hit the post for the visitors before Jeremie Aliadiare had a goal ruled out for handball.
