Plymouth Argyle player arrested after car crash

LONDON, June 7 (Reuters) - A player for Championship side (second division) Plymouth Argyle was arrested on Saturday after a fatal car crash in northern England in which two young children were killed and a man seriously injured.

“The club is aware of the incident involving one of our players that occurred on Saturday morning on the M6,” the club said in a statement on its (Home | Plymouth Argyle) Web site.

“As the incident is subject to police inquiries, the club feels it would be inappropriate to make any comment at this stage.”

An emergency service source named the player as Luke McCormick. He is being held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police said.

Emergency services were called to the collision between a Toyota and a Range Rover just before 0500 GMT near Junction 16 on the southbound carriageway of the motorway near Stoke on Trent.

The Toyota left the road and went down an embankment hitting several trees on the way. The player, driving the black Range Rover, was unhurt.

One of the children died at the scene and the other on the way to hospital. They were aged eight and 10. Staffordshire police said the 37-year-old man was seriously injured.

Three other passengers in the car—a man and two boys aged eight and 15—were slightly injured.
