I never liked Yakubu, and now, he is getting better in my books. Great hattrick.

Yakubu treble just the tonic for Everton

Written by: AFP

A hat-trick from Nigerian international Aiyegbeni Yakubu, seen here in action in November 2007, saw in-form Everton to a comfortable 3-0 victory over listless Fulham at Goodison Park on Saturday.

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - A hat-trick from Nigerian international Aiyegbeni Yakubu saw in-form Everton to a comfortable 3-0 victory over listless Fulham at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Yakubu's goals lifted him to the top of the club's scoring charts as 'The Toffees' extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches in all competitions.

For Fulham, defeat meant they are now winless in four Premiership matches and have won just three of 21 Premiership games under manager Lawrie Sanchez.

The London side, whose last Premiership away win came in September last year, managed to hold off Everton in the first-half but Yakubu seized the match by the scruff of the neck in the second-half.

The Nigerian hitman pounced in the 51st minute to tap home after Antti Niemi had saved with his feet from Australian playmaker Tim Cahill.

Worse was to come for Fulham 10 minutes later with Yakubu heading powerfully home from Mikel Arteta's corner with a little help by Phil Jagielka.

South African midfielder Steven Pienaar was on hand to create Yakubu's third goal as his pass was latched onto by the former Portsmouth and Middlesbrough striker, who shot past the helpless Niemi.

Fulham had very little to offer in attack and it was only a shot in the dying seconds by Northern Ireland international David Healy - only on as a substitute in the second-half - that caused the Everton defence a scare, only for it to be deflected for a corner.

Everton manager David Moyes:
"Yakubu does what he does best - scored goals. He is getting better at the other things we want from him, but his strength is scoring goals and he's done it everywhere he has been.

"He scored three in the second half, and I think if we had scored six no-one could have questioned it. Some of our football in the second half was as good as we have played."

Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez:
"It is difficult to cope with good quality players like Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta, and Yakubu made the most of his chances.

"I know it sounds like whingeing again, but I thought the first goal was offside. It was another poor decision that went against us.

"It gave Everton a lift and formed the bedrock of their second-half display.

"We had to go forward from then, and that meant we could be opened up by a good side - and that is what Everton are."

Everton 3-0 Fulham

Ayegbeni Yakubu grabbed a second-half hat-trick as Everton stretched their unbeaten run to 10 games - the best in five-and-a-half years under manager David Moyes. After a quiet start, Everton warmed up nicely for their Carling Cup quarter-final at West Ham United on Wednesday. Yakubu, a 11million signing from Middlesbrough, has now scored nine goals in 16 games, but the better statistic is eight in 10 starts in the Barclays Premier League.
