Everton skipper Neville "awestruck" by ref

Phil Neville claimed "awestruck" match officials will continue to ruin big games with mistakes as he wrestled with the injustice of Everton's derby defeat.

Everton's captain has experienced the other side of the coin during his time with Manchester United and believes there are some Premier League referees who are dazzled by the reputation of football's super powers.

Mark Clattenburg's decision not to award Joleon Lescott a penalty in injury time following his tangle with Jamie Carragher was just one of a number of things he botched up on Saturday afternoon but Neville wearily admits it won't be the last time Everton are wronged.

"I have been on the other side of things and you can see that some referees are awestruck when they deal with certain players and certain clubs," Neville told the Liverpool Echo. "But it's never going to change. It's been happening for 20 or 30 years and, unfortunately, we just have to get on with it."

Everton skipper Neville: More players will quit international football

Everton captain Phil Neville believes more players will decide to quit international football.

Paul Scholes, a former Manchester United teammate of Neville's, quit the international stage three years ago but is still at the top of his game domestically. He is one of an increasing number of players choosing to take an early break from the demands of the international game - and the Everton skipper can understand why.

"It wouldn't surprise me if you see other players going down that route. I've thought about it a number of times," Neville told evertonfc.com.

"The demands are such that something has got to give. You're seeing top-class Premiership players retiring from international football when they've still got their best years ahead of them.

"For me, playing for England is still the pinnacle and always will be," he added.

"Sometimes in life something's got to give and for certain players it's international football.

"If you spoke to (England manager) Steve (McClaren), he would probably tell you that the (amount of) football we play in this country hinders his job as well."

Neville backs Everton to shock Chelsea

Everton captain Phil Neville is convinced they can shock Chelsea tomorrow.

Neville said: "Things are coming together nicely which sets us up for a mouth-watering game at Chelsea.

"It is a game where we can really have a go.

"It has been a long time since we have been able to do that down at Stamford Bridge and we are looking forward to it.

"There is a bit of a swagger developing about the team, and that comes with winning games.

"Just look at our striking options for starters. We had four strikers at Manchester United - here we have five!

"It's a terrific mix. We have two exciting young strikers and three proven Premiership footballers. It is a sign of how far the club has come."

Everton's Neville: England players embarrassed

Everton captain Phil Neville admits England's players are "embarrassed" by their Euro2008 prediciment.

"I think we're hurt, I think we're a little bit embarrassed that we've not wrapped it up," Neville told Sky Sports News. "We should be going into this (Croatia) game in a celebratory mode, but we're not and we've got to deal with the situation.

"We probably haven't performed. We didn't perform in the first year of the group stage matches like we did in the second part of the year and that's cost us.

"We've got to accept that now, and just hope. We've not had too much luck recently and we need a bit of luck on Saturday. If we get that I think the Croatia game will look after itself."

Neville: Lescott Everton's best player

Everton captain Phil Neville says teammate Joleon Lescott deserves his England recognition this season.

Lescott, 25, arrived on the scene last month and according to Neville he has grown in stature despite the defeat by Russia which leaves England's qualification destiny out of their hands.

"That game really opened his eyes to the fact that he can play at the top level, " said the Everton captain, who is also in the national squad.

"Hopefully a few of the younger lads will get a chance against Austria and he will be one of them.

"The thing that impresses me most is that Joleon works so hard, keeps his feet on the ground and is dedicated.

"He is at a club now that is allowing him to progress as a centre-half and a left-back."

Everton have made a good start to the Premier League season. Not only that, they have progressed in both the UEFA Cup and Carling Cup.

Neville said: "Joleon has been outstanding and our best player by a country mile.

"He is getting stronger, fitter and better in every game he plays."

Everton's Neville tells players to stop moaning about fans

Everton's Neville tells players to stop moaning about fans

Phil Neville believes footballers need to look at themselves if they are to avoid the "frightening" barracking they receive from supporters.

Earlier this week, Portsmouth centre-back Sol Campbell claimed the abuse "gone too far", in the wake of the reception he was given by Tottenham fans last weekend. Neville fully appreciates Campbell's stance, as he and brother Gary have often been the targets of fearsome abuse in the past.

Yet he concedes footballers "do not help themselves", primarily because of the vitriol they are seen handing out to referees.

However, the 30-year-old Everton captain also feels young players earning fortunes at clubs have it far too easy.

"As footballers, we need to look at ourselves," Neville said on BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

"Eighty to 90% of footballers handle themselves with dignity and in the right way.

"But it's a small minority that are letting us down, and the vast amounts of money we earn means we have a lot of responsibility and are there to be shot at.

"If we are going out for a drink then you have to make sure you are going to the right places and behave in the right way.

"If you don't, let's make sure the punishment is severe enough so you don't do it again.

"But I look at the young kids at clubs now and they don't seem to have the same upbringing in terms of punishment and things like that.

"There's a softness coming through, not helped by the foreign influence.

"I know when I was an apprentice, I not only did my football duties, I went to college one day a week and I also cleaned boots, showers and cars.

"Nowadays, they are not allowed to do that.

"I asked a young apprentice at Everton the other day to fill the fridge up with drinks for the first team and the youth coach said he was not allowed to do that.

"I find it incredible there is that softness because young players are being paid vast amounts of money, and they don't seem to be working for that money.

"Too much is coming too soon to these players. There isn't that toughness I know I had when I was an apprentice."

But when seasoned professionals are viewed by those same young players firing a verbal volley at match officials, Neville knows it is a case of practising what is being preached.

"We don't help ourselves," he added.

"We need to look after ourselves a lot better than we are doing, both on and off the pitch, but it is only a small minority.

"For young kids coming through, it is only right for them to look at us as examples.

"Having a go at referees, and the language used by footballers nowadays, is not acceptable. Maybe that's where we need to improve."

Everton skipper Neville: Premiership kids are soft

Everton captain Phil Neville has branded the young players coming through at Premiership clubs as soft.
