Everton's players will face even more competition for a place in the coming weeks.

The Blues are hoping to welcome Tim Cahill and James Vaughan back from long-term injury when the forthcoming international break is over.

Neither Vaughan (shoulder) nor Cahill (foot) have featured since pre-season. Thomas Gravesen also looks likely to be back in the fray soon.

"We are going to have some more selection dilemmas in the coming weeks because we are going to have Tim Cahill and James Vaughan back in the coming weeks - maybe just after the international break," said manager David Moyes.

"Thomas Gravesen will come into that category as well and we will need them."

The current form of James McFadden and Joleon Lescott, two of the goalscorers in Kharkiv in the week, is also impressing Moyes - as well as giving him a further headache.

"Joleon is having quite some season, but we have said all along I don't think there is a better left-back in the country when he plays there. He is a centre-half but we decided on Thursday to alter things a little bit and he has shown his versatility.

"If he keeps coming up with the goals then it is great for us. Not only was it a good goal but great adjustment to finish it off.

"I have to say, he galloped on at left-back, he was a force and he is also a very good defender.

"James McFadden's form is such that we nearly expect him to score when he plays because we are confident in him and he is confident in himself.

"He missed the early part of pre-season but he is now starting to regain his fitness along with his confidence."

Australian Cahill set to begin Everton training

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill could finally be about to get the green light to resume training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Australian has been dogged by a foot injury since March and is now due a scan this week that could signal his return to full training - and that could mean a dramatic comeback in the Merseyside derby with Liverpool on October 20.

Everton boss Moyes confident Cahill fit for derby

Everton boss Dave Moyes is confident Tim Cahill will be fit for tomorrow's derby against Liverpool.

"Tim started training on Monday and we are pleased to have him back," Moyes told evertonfc.com. "There is no doubt we have missed him since he's been out."

Cahill scored in the memorable 3-0 victory in last season's corresponding fixture and the boss is delighted to have him back in the fray.

"He is a goalscoring central midfielder with drive and when you look at the goals he has scored for Everton in the past three years, he has been a big part of our success.

"This a big period for us. We gave the players a few days off last week after a difficult period and gave them a chance to relax. From Saturday, we have a lot of big games and need them fresh."

Everton's Cahill happy to be over worst

Tim Cahill has made a major impact for Everton since his return from injury and he told the official web site that the club and his family have been instrumental in helping his recovery.

"Mentally and physically it's been challenging but I have got a great family and kids that keep me focussed and good staff at Everton so the best thing I can do is to work hard and look forward to the future. It's been hard watching from the stands but I've helped my self learn more about my body and the game and it's starting to pay off."

Irvine: Cahill transforms Everton options

Everton assistant boss Alan Irvine has revealed Aussie Tim Cahill allows them to tinker with their formation unlike anyother player.

"We try and choose the system that fits the opposition we are playing, either to combat their system or to cause them problems," Irvine told evertonfc.com. "We will use that system at times and we will use other systems at times.

"With Tim's ability it gives us the opportunity to pick and choose our system more than we have been able to."

Everton's current squad, bolstered over the summer, now has players able to fulfil a wide range of roles in order to service the team.

"It means we can play with one striker with Tim playing behind but there will be plenty of times when we will play with two strikers," said Irvine. "We have the luxury of having a lot of players to choose from and the luxury of being able to switch formations."

Cahill late show puts the brakes on Chelsea revival

Written by: AFP

Everton´s Tim Cahill(L) fights for the ball with Chelsea´s Shaun Wright-Phillips during their Premiership football match at Stamford Bridge in London. Cahill´s brilliant overhead-kick one minute from full-time earned Everton a barely-deserved point at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and put the brakes on Chelsea´s march up the Premier League table.

LONDON (AFP) - Tim Cahill's brilliant overhead-kick one minute from full-time earned Everton a barely-deserved point at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and put the brakes on Chelsea's march up the Premier League table.

Chelsea appeared on course for their fifth consecutive league win thanks to Didier Drogba's close-range header 20 minutes from the end.

But Australian midfielder Cahill's stunning late intervention saw Avram Grants team drop two points.

That Everton drew the match owed much to a fine display from goalkeeper Tim Howard, while Chelsea's disappointment was compounded by the injury suffered by defender Ricardo Carvalho in the first half.

Chelsea started the game in confident fashion, but it was Everton who had the first clear chance of the game in the 15th minute, when Leon Osman headed Ayegbeni Yakubu's left-wing cross into the path of Steven Pienaar.

With the goal at his mercy, the South African failed to connect with the bouncing ball, and Chelsea were able to clear.

After that escape, Chelsea quickly found their stride, and the rest of the first half was virtually one-way traffic.

In the 21st minute, Chelsea - already without goalkeeper Petr Cech and captain John Terry due to injury - suffered a further blow when Ricardo Carvalho landed awkwardly on his back after challenging Yakubu for a high ball.

The Portugal international was replaced seven minutes later by Tal Ben Haim, and Grant will hope that the problem is not sufficiently serious to keep Carvalho out for a long time.

Just before the half-hour mark, Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard made a fine save from Shaun Wright-Phillips after Lampard had turned Drogba's cross back to his England team-mate.

Seconds later, Howard made an even better stop, somehow keeping out Lampard's rising shot from 10 yards with his left hand, even though the goalkeeper's momentum was taking him in the other direction.

Everton were let off the hook again one minute into first-half stoppage time, when Wayne Bridge sent Wright-Phillips clear on the left.

The low cross seemed perfect for Drogba, but the ball took a bad bounce just as the Ivorian was about to strike it from six yards, and his shot flew well wide.

Everton manager David Moyes made two changes for the second half, sending on Victor Anichebe and James McFadden for Phil Neville and Yakubu.

Anichebe looked far sharper than Yakubu in attack, but again it was Chelsea who went close to scoring when Cahill almost headed Lampard's free-kick past his own goalkeeper.

After introducing McFadden and Anichebe, Moyes had switched from a 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-4-1-1 system, and his team appeared far more solid as they sought to repel Chelsea's attacks.

In the 63rd minute, Everton created a rare opportunity when Tony Hibbert crossed from the right, but Cahill and McFadden ran into each other as they tried to reach the ball.

Hibbert then kept his team level when he cleared off the line from Alex's volley after Howard's weak punch from Lampard's corner had fallen to the Brazilian defender.

Everton finally cracked in the 70th minute when Drogba escaped the marking of Lee Carsley and Joleon Lescott to head in a near-post corner from Salomon Kalou, who had come on as a substitute for Wright-Phillips.

Ten minutes from full-time, Drogba burst past three opponents but could only produce a weak 20-yard shot which Howard saved easily.

Chelsea were stunned when, with a minute left, McFadden's cross-shot from the right bounced off Juliano Belletti, falling perfectly for Cahill to send his overhead-kick past Carlo Cudicini from seven yards.

Everton hero Cahill: My best ever goal

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill says his spectacular overhead strike at Chelsea on Sunday was his best ever goal in the Premiership.

"I am really happy to be playing and to get the goal was a bonus," Cahill told evertonTV. "It was probably up there with my best.

"It is one of those things; when you come to a place like Chelsea you know you are going to be under the cosh but the gaffer asked me to push up in the last five minutes and then try and get on the end of something."

Cahill will now link up with Australia but is unsure of his fitness after playing six games in rapid succession.

He said: "There's a couple of weeks off now and I have got a couple of knocks so I'll have to see if I am fit to play for Australia which at the moment is doubtful.

"I am just going to rest and then on Wednesday I will go into camp and see how I get on."

Cahill withdrawal baffles Baan

Written by: AFP

Australia´s caretaker coach Rob Baan admits he was surprised by Tim Cahill, seen here in July 2007, withdrawing from the Socceroos squad to face Nigeria in London.

LONDON (AFP) - Australia's caretaker coach Rob Baan admits he was surprised by Tim Cahill's late withdrawal from the Socceroos squad to face Nigeria in London on Saturday.

Everton only informed the Australia Football Federation on Wednesday that Cahill was not fit to join up with the rest of his team-mates, forcing Baan to change his plans for the friendly at Fulham's Craven Cottage.

Cahill has played six matches for Everton since returning from a broken foot that had sidelined him since March.

The midfielder scored a superb equaliser at Chelsea on Sunday, but his Premier League club insist a couple of unspecified niggling injuries make it too risky for him to play this weekend.

Baan would have prefered to hear from Cahill or Everton sooner and he said: "I was a little bit surprised that Cahill didn't inform us in time.

"It was only at the time that all the players came into the camp that we heard he was injured."

With Cahill joining Mark Viduka, Jason Culina, Mark Bresciano, Michael Petkovic and Vincenzo Grella on the injury list, Baan will use Australia's first match since September to give his young stars a chance to shine.

Celtic's in-form striker Scott McDonald will win his fifth cap, while Genclerbirligi's Nicky Carle makes his first start as Cahill's replacement.

Baan revealed Nurnberg forward Josh Kennedy and Grosseto's Carl Valeri are also likely to feature as Harry Kewell and Scott Chipperfield are not fit enough to complete 90 minutes.

There is plenty of reason for Baan's team to want to impress as they could be watched by prospective new coach Dick Advocaat, who is in line to take charge by the new year.

"It is a significant game for some players," Baan said. "Nicky Carle will get a chance, (Scott) McDonald has shown good form and he can start. It gives a chance for some other players to show their capabilities.

"I might start with McDonald and Kewell but I want to see the Kennedy and McDonald partnership as well.

"Carle and Valeri are the players who now can show they can play on this level.

"Hopefully the new coach will then have an idea how many more chances he has."

Baan, who works as Australian football's technical director, is in the unusual position of knowing this is almost certain to be his only match in charge after he replaced Graham Arnold.

Advocaat is expected to arrive from Zenit St Peterburg by the time Australia's World Cup qualifiers begin in February.

Baan said: "I don't think it's difficult. It's just something unexpected. With Graham Arnold with our Olympic team for the qualification rounds there was no choice.

"With a new coach coming in hopefully in January the only other possibility was to appoint Graham's assistant but he had already signed for Sydney.

"I knew the players from the Asian Cup, so that is an advantage for me and makes it easier to do the match."

Everton's Cahill pulls out of Australia friendly

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill will not be involved in Australia's friendly against Nigeria on Saturday at Craven Cottage after the Merseysiders insisted he rests during the international break.

Cahill is expected to attend the match in London, but the Australians have accepted a request for the 27-year-old to sit out the game.

Everton have taken a tough stance with the Australians following Cahill's involvement in the Asian Cup when he was not fully recovered from a metatarsal injury.

Cahill then suffered a recurrence in pre-season and missed the first 13 games of the season.

Osman, Hibbert set to open Everton contract talks

Leon Osman and Tony Hibbert are poised to become the latest Everton players to commit their long term futures to Everton.

Having wrapped up deals with Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta and Andrew Johnson in the last six months and given lengthy contracts to the players they have signed recently, the Blues are keen to sort out business with those whose deals are close to running out, says the Liverpool Echo.

Since making the breakthrough from Everton's Academy, Osman and Hibbert have become important members of the squad and between them have clocked up more than 350 appearances, the majority of which have come during David Moyes' reign.

Cahill helps Everton get back on track

Written by: AFP

Tim Cahill, seen here 05 December 2007, showed his eye for goal as the Australia midfielder put the seal on Everton´s 2-0 win over Bolton on Wednesday.

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - Tim Cahill showed his eye for goal as the Australia midfielder put the seal on Everton's 2-0 win over Bolton on Wednesday.

Cahill struck in the second half at Goodison Park after Phil Neville had broken the deadlock with his first goal for almost a year.

It was the perfect response from David Moyes's side after an unlucky defeat at Manchester United on Sunday ended their 13-match unbeaten run.

Bolton remain in danger of being dragged into the relegation battle after their ninth away league match without a win this season.

Moyes welcomed back Mikel Arteta after the Spanish midfielder missed Sunday's defeat through illness.

After a quiet start, Bolton had the first sight of goal in the 15th minute when Ricardo Gardner tried his luck from distance, but the full-back's shot was too high to trouble Tim Howard.

Arteta threatened five minutes later when he took Joleon Lescott's pass and drove forward before hitting a shot that deflected away for a corner.

Everton hadn't lost to a side outside the big four of Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool this season.

And, with Arteta pulling the strings in midfield, they were in control for most of the first half. Arteta produced a sublime pass to pick out Ayegbeni Yakubu, only for the Nigerian striker to head wide at the near post.

Yakubu had the ball in the net just before half time but his close-range effort was ruled as Cahill had strayed offside.

Cahill was denied by a brilliant save from Jussi Jaaskelainen early in the second half, but the Bolton keeper was caught out moments later.

Neville's cross was heading towards Cahill but Jaaskelainen misjudged his run to catch and the ball flew straight into the net.

It was the first time Neville had hit the net since his effort against Newcastle on December 30 last year.

Bolton substitute Gavin McCann went close with an overhead kick but Cahill put the result beyond doubt in the 70th minute.

Lescott crossed from the byline and the Australian found space to rifle home a fine strike.

Bolton kept plugging away but Gary Megson's team were denied even a consolation when Howard pushed out Nicolas Anelka's strike.
