Zenden joy Summer signing Boudewijn Zenden scored in the 73rd minute to give Erik Gerets' team a hard-earned victory over fellow strugglers RC Lens at the Stade Vélodrome – a result which lifted OM to 17th place in the table. Dutch winger Zenden capped an impressive display by shooting low into Lens keeper Vedran Runje's goal from 20 metres. The defeat sent Lens into the bottom three, one point below their hosts, albeit with a game in hand. Lead lost Meanwhile, high-flying Nancy were held to a 1-1 home draw by second-bottom FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. Nancy, who now have 23 points from ten matches – two fewer than Lyon but having played one game less – were denied maximum plunder by a 57th-minute equaliser from young forward Mevlut Erding. They had taken the lead on 26 minutes through Brazilian striker Kim's sixth goal of the campaign, yet were unable to secure a sixth successive home win in France's top flight. The result moved French Cup holders Sochaux three points clear of bottom club FC Metz. |

The victory lifts OM out of the bottom three and continues the resurgence shown since the arrival of the Belgian Eric Gerets on the south coast. Lens meanwhile replace Marseille in the relegation zone with new manager Jean-Pierre Papin not enjoying the best start to his Ligue 1 coaching career. Papin will have to instil the same kind of killer instinct he possessed in front of goal into his team as Lens struggled to test Steve Mandanda for the vast majority of the game. Indeed, their only concrete chance during the 90 minutes fell to substitute Yohan Demont, the midfielder seeing his shot turned off the line by a fantastic Mandanda save after 23 minutes. At the other end, Zenden produced a good save from Verdan Runje following some clever interplay between the impressive Mathieu Valbuena and Mamadou Niang before Djibril Cisse continued his miserable run of form by missing a great chance at the back post to put his team 1-0 up. Runje came to his side's rescue again in the second-half as he pushed a Niang header off the line. And as the match seemed to be heading for a disappointing 0-0 up popped Zenden to grab the three points for Marseille, the Dutchman scoring his first goal – a firm finish into the bottom right-hand corner – for his club. Niang had the chance to put the seal on much-needed win soon after but was guilty of terrible miss, the forward heading a Valbuena cross inexplicably wide from five yards. Luckily for the Senegalese striker it mattered little as Marseille held out for an important win and one which sends Lens further and further into trouble. |

In fact, they headed into the game placed a lowly 19th, and looked increasingly like they would drop more points as they failed to break down a stubborn Lens side. However, the moment of inspiration was provided by former Barcelona and Liverpool man Zenden, who unleashed a bicycle-kick in the 74th minute to score the only goal of the game and drag them up into 17th place. That, however, failed to take away grom what was another disappointing home display, and the home crowd let their frustration show, jeering Djibril Cisse off the pitch when he was substituted after missing more than a couple of chances. They were almost pegged back in the final minutes, but Dindane and Monterrubio both failed to convert, handing Marseille three points that they were a touch lucky to escape with. They next face Porto in the Champions League, a competition they have been in red hot form in. It also turned out to be an ominous result for Lens, who drop from 17th into 18th place; into the bottom three. |

Top of this group but nearly bottom of the French league. I think the game will end in a tie. Prediction: Marseille 1-1 FC Porto Forca Super Liga. |
