SM Caen Stade Malherbe de Caen is a French football team, playing in the city of Caen, Normandy. The team is named after François de Malherbe (1555-1628), a poet, critic and translator, who was a native of Caen. In the 2003/2004 season, Caen finished 2nd in Ligue 2, gaining promotion to Ligue 1. They were relegated on the last day of the 2004/05 Ligue 1 season, finishing in 18th place despite some positive results, including a surprise 3-2 away win at Marseille. But the main highlight of their season was making it into the final of the Coupe de la Ligue for the first time in their history. Their chance at a major trophy eluded them however, as they lost 2-1 to Strasbourg in the final. On 25th May 2007, SM Caen obtained promotion to Ligue 1 after a victory in last game at Libourne (1-2). |

Caen moved off the foot of the Ligue 1 table on Sunday evening after defeating Toulouse for the second time in five days.
The Normandy-based club beat Elie Baup's sie 4-2 on penalties in the Coupe de la Ligue in midweek and made it back-to-back victories to end a six-game winless streak in Ligue 1. A goal in each half from Lilian Compan and Benjamin Nivet put Franck Dumas's side in command and although Achille Emana pulled goal back in stoppage time, Caen held on for their first league win since the opening day of the season. Clearly bouyed by their midweek Cup success, Caen started brightly and took just 12 minutes to break the deadlock. Compan capitalised on a poor defensive clearance by lobbing Toulouse goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez who could only watch the ball sail over him and into the corner of the net. The home side were unfortunate not to double their advantage when Gregory Proment's free-kick grazed the crossbar. Caen continued to press forward and a drilled strike from Yoan Gouffran looked to be heading towards goal before taking a deflection. Dumas's side carried on where they left off in the second half and were rewarded with a second goal when Nivet rose highest to head home a Proment corner 10 minutes after the break. Andre-Pierre Gignac should have pulled a goal back for the visitors but shot into the side netting. The visitors were dominant in the closing stages and although Emana capitalised on a weak punch from Viincent Plante to volley home in stoppage time, it proved to be no more than a consolation. |
