AJ Auxerre

Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise, or AJ Auxerre, is a French football team, founded in 1905, playing in the town of Auxerre in Burgundy. Its home ground is Stade l'Abbé-Deschamps on the banks of the River Yonne (capacity 23,467, 22,000 seated). Auxerre are famous throughout Europe, their success at the highest level being unprecedented for a club from such a small town (under 40,000). With Nantes being relegated into Ligue 2 in 2007, Auxerre remain the only French team who have never been relegated.

After the 2004-05 season, Auxerre was forced to seek a new manager for the first time in over 40 years, as Guy Roux retired after having been manager since 1961. Roux saw the club rise through every division in French football, culminating in promotion to Ligue 1 in 1980, and the French championship in 1996.

Auxerre replaced Roux with Jacques Santini, a former France national team head coach who had also managed several top French clubs and had a brief stint at Tottenham Hotspur of England. Santini was sacked after only one season however, failing to guide Auxerre into Europe and was replaced by Jean Fernandez for the 2006-07 season.

FC Girondins de Bordeaux

FC Girondins de Bordeaux is a French football team, playing in the city of Bordeaux.

The club was founded in 1881 as an omnisport club. The Girondins won the French league in 1950, 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1999. The club plays the home-matches in the Stade Chaban Delmas, named after the former mayor of Bordeaux, Jacques Chaban-Delmas. Parc Lescure was the previous name of the stadium. The club has often qualified for European football.

Their biggest European triumph was reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1996. After qualifying for the Intertoto Cup, the Girondins won that competition to get a place in the UEFA Cup. They reached the final after victories over Vardar Skopje, Rotor Volgograd, Real Betis, a heroic quarter final win over AC Milan, and a semi-final win over Slavia Prague. In the UEFA Cup final, Bayern Munich prevented the Bordelais winning their first European Cup after a 5-1 defeat on aggregate.

Former Bordeaux midfielder Michel Pavon took charges of head coach in October 24, 2003. Because of health problems, he stood back and continued his career as scout on June 2005. Brazilian Ricardo became the new coach, until Laurent Blanc took over in 2007.

The team has been an entire subsidiary company of the French television group M6 since 2001.

SM Caen

Stade Malherbe de Caen is a French football team, playing in the city of Caen, Normandy. The team is named after François de Malherbe (1555-1628), a poet, critic and translator, who was a native of Caen.

In the 2003/2004 season, Caen finished 2nd in Ligue 2, gaining promotion to Ligue 1. They were relegated on the last day of the 2004/05 Ligue 1 season, finishing in 18th place despite some positive results, including a surprise 3-2 away win at Marseille. But the main highlight of their season was making it into the final of the Coupe de la Ligue for the first time in their history. Their chance at a major trophy eluded them however, as they lost 2-1 to Strasbourg in the final.

On 25th May 2007, SM Caen obtained promotion to Ligue 1 after a victory in last game at Libourne (1-2).

Le Mans UC72 is a French football club, based in Le Mans. It was founded in 1985, having gone under its full name of Le Mans Union Club 72 since their foundation in 1902. Rudy Garcia, former coach of Dijon SCO, succeeds Frédéric Hantz, as manager of the MUC 72. The club was promoted to Ligue 1 for the 2005-06 season. The club was founded in 1928 as a works team for the Peugeot motor car factory in the village of Sochaux. The following year, Sochaux's management sought to attract talented players from around Europe to become France's first professional soccer club.

Results soon followed as Sochaux captured the 1935 and 1938 league championships.

In the post-war era, the FCSM saw its stature in French soccer steadily diminish from a league heavyweight to a middle-of-the-table performer relying more on its excellent youth development program than on the substantial budgets of yore.
