A corner on the left was only partially cleared by the Fulham rearguard and when Brown sent the ball back into the penalty area, the defence failed to deal with it.

Bramble rose the highest to knock the ball down for the advancing Bent and the Wigan striker sent his volley into the roof of the net as Niemi looked to close him down.

But Fulham equalised in the 78th minute when Wigan's defence failed to clear a Chris Baird cross and when the ball rebounded to Dempsey, the American striker made no mistake from 12 yards.

Both sides worked hard to find a winner but had to settle for a point apiece.

We were energetic and full of effort, which was pleasing, and we dominated possession and created the better chances, but then we could easily have lost the game as well."

"I am a tinge disappointed. We did have the better chances. Both teams were desperate not to get beat and that always adds to the tensions. Overall I am pleased we picked up a point away from home. Two weeks ago we didn't have a hope of getting out of the bottom three and now we are in striking distance of that."

Clint Dempsey saved a point for Fulham against Wigan Athletic in the Cottagers' first game following the departure of Lawrie Sanchez. Marcus Bent had put the Latics ahead with a rising half-volley, but Fulham bounced back to claim a share of the spoils through Dempsey's lashed effort.
