Leaders Bayern stumble as Leverkusen climb

Written by: AFP

Bayer Leverkusen´s midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta celebrates after scoring against Wolfsburg during their Bundesliga football match in Wolfsburg. Bayer Leverkusen are up to fifth in the table thanks to their 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg.

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayer Leverkusen are up to fifth in the table thanks to their win over VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday while Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich stay top despite their 3-1 humbling at champions VfB Stuttgart.

After their UEFA Cup defeat in midweek at Spartak Moscow, Leverkusen moved up from ninth to fifth with a comfortable 2-1 win at Wolfsburg.

The visitors took the lead when Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta slotted home Stefan Kiessling's pass on 36 minutes before Kiessling bagged one of his own on 52 minutes.

And Wolfsburg were given a consolation goal when German international Manuel Friedrich turned the ball into his own net with 20 minutes left.

Nuremberg sank deeper into the bottom three mire as they were beaten 3-1 at Arminia Bielefeld, who move up to 14th.

The home side had to come from behind after Andreas Wolf headed Nuremberg into an early lead on 43 minutes, before Bielefeld hit back when Rudiger Kauf headed home just after an hour.

Polish striker Artur Wichniarek put his side ahead, before South African striker Sibusiso Zuma sealed the win in injury time to leave Nuremberg five points from safety and third from bottom.

But the shock of the weekend came on Saturday as ten-man Bayern Munich crashed to their first defeat of the season as they were humbled 3-1 by defending Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart.

Two goals by Mario Gomez - scorer of a double in their 4-2 defeat by Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday - and a wonder strike by Turkish international Yildiray Basturk at Stuttgart's Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion meant the leaders were in the shock situation of being 3-0 down at half-time.

Bayern had only conceded four league goals before this game, but they were reduced to ten-men after Brazilian Lucio was shown a red card on 70 minutes before Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni hit a late consolation goal.

This was Bayern's first defeat in any competition this season.

In their defence, this was Munich's second game in less than 48 hours after they drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night.

Werder Bremen are just a point behind Bayern in second-place as Brazilian midfielder Diego struck with two first-half goals as the home side won 4-0 against fourth-placed Karlsruhe.

Hamburg are in third after they drew 1-1 at Schalke 04.

Having struggled earlier in the season, Hansa Rostock are up to 15th as they picked up a much-needed three points after striker Enrico Kern hit a hat-trick in their 3-1 win over bottom-club Energie Cottbus.

Hertha Berlin had Brazilian striker Andre Lima to thank as his goal three minutes from time gave his side a 1-0 win over Hanover at a snow-covered Olympic Stadium as a heavy shower before kick-off made conditions difficult.

Mid-table side Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 at Borussia Dortmund.

On Friday night, VfL Bochum put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three with a 2-0 win over second-from-bottom Duisburg with goals by Canadian defender Daniel Imhof and Danish striker Tommy Bechmann.

German star Schneider back in training

Written by: AFP

Germany´s vice-captain Bernd Schneider, seen here in August 2007, is set for a return to training with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen this weekend after recovering from the knee strain he picked up last September.
BERLIN (AFP) - Germany's vice-captain Bernd Schneider is set for a return to training with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen this weekend after recovering from the knee strain he picked up last September.

Schneider, 33, has only just returned to running and is one of Germany's first-choice midfield stars, including Michael Ballack and Torsten Frings, missing from Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier clash with Cyprus in Hanover.

The midfielder picked up a knee injury in his side's UEFA Cup clash against Uniao de Leiria on 20 September and will resume training with Bayer's squad on Sunday.

But he will be struggling to prove his fitness to Bayer coach Michael Skibbe for his side's next Bundesliga clash with Duisburg on November 24.

Charisteas Out Of Greece Squad

Angelos Charisteas has been left out of Greece’s squad for the EURO 2008 qualifiers against Malta and Hungary.

The reigning champions have already booked their place in the finals regardless of the results of the remaining Group C ties, following victory over neighbors Turkey in Istanbul last time out. Therefore, coach Otto Rehhagel is expected to experiment with players and formations.

The German coach, apart from the regulars, called up Vangelis Mantzios as a reward for his appearance on Sunday to Panathinaikos’ 2-1 victory over AEK in the Athenian derby between the two cross-city rivals.

The two remaining stress-free matches with Malta at the Olympic Stadium of Athens on Saturday and with Hunagry in Budapest next week are also a great chance for Nikos Spiropoulos to earn his first cap with the senior team. Panionios left back is regularly called in the Greece squad during the last few months, but he has yet to play.

Nurenberg striker Charisteas and defender Paraskevas Antzas of Olympiacos are the only notable absentees as they are still recovering from an ankle problem and a thigh injury, respectively.

Greece are sitting comfortably at the Group C summit with 25 points, while Norway are second five points adrift and Turkey third a further two points behind.

Rehhagel’s Squad Selection

Goalkeepers: Antonis Nikopolidis (Olympiacos), Costas Chalkias (Aris Thessalonica).

Defenders: Giourkas Seitaridis (Club Atlético de Madrid), Sotiris Kyrgiakos (Eintracht Frankfurt), Traianos Dellas (AEK), Nikos Spiropoulos (Panionios), Loukas Vintra (Panathinaikos), Giannis Goumas (Panathinaikos), Vassilis Torosidis (Olympiacos), Christos Patsatzoglou (Olympiacos), Michalis Kapsis (APOEL)

Midfielders: Angelos Basinas (RCD Mallorca), Giorgos Karagounis (Panathinaikos), Stelios Giannakopoulos (Bolton Wanderers), Alexandros Tziolis (Panathinaikos), Konstantinos Katsouranis (SL Benfica).

Forwards: Dimitris Salpingidis (Panathinaikos), Nikos Liberopoulos (AEK), Theofanis Gekas (Bayer 04 Leverkusen), Giorgos Samaras (Manchester City), Giannis Amanatidis (Eintracht Frankfurt).

Juan On Violence: I Fear For My Family

Roma defender Juan has revealed that the football-related violence in Italy is making him fear for his family.

The Brazilian star only moved to Serie A in the summer, following his transfer from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, however he has already witnessed the more unsavoury side of Italian football.

“I fear for my family,” Juan told Globo Esporte.

“My family always come to see me play during games – my wife comes and so do my sons.”

Juan’s Brazilian national team-mates, Maicon and Julio Cesar, who also play in Serie A, have outlined similar concerns.

“In Italy at this moment the climate is not right to play. The championship should not go ahead at this time – there have been some serious incidents,” said Inter defender Maicon.

“It is a tense situation,” added Maicon’s Nerazzuri colleague Julio Cesar. “In such a delicate situation I do not know how things can continue.”

tt Up In The Air

BuIt seems like Hans-Jörg Butt could be calling an abortive end to his Portuguese foreign affair as the German keeper is unhappy by being the eternal reservist in Lisbon and Butt is open to a move...

The keeper's agent, Jorg Neblung, explained curtly that the situation was unsatisfactory as the original deal included a verbal promise that he'd be offered a first team place at da Luz, but existing Portuguese goalie Quim convinced both ex-Coach Santos and new man Camacho.

The number 24 landed in Lisbon in July 2007 and signed for the Águias (Eagles) on a a two-year deal after termination his previous contract with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, in a move designed, ironically enough to guarantee him the first team football he'd lost at Bayer.

After losing his spot at Leverkusen to young René Adler, Butt canceled his contract (until 2009) as he activated a clause that meant that the goalie was allowed to leave the club if he didn't appear in a specific minimum amount of games.

In August 2007 he made his debut for Benfica in the Torneio de Guadiana between Benfica, Sporting and Real Betis, saving a Betis spot kick and helping his new side to win the tournament. Since then, however, he's lost out clearly to Quim.

His agent is, however, not closing the door to an eventual reconciliation with the Portuguese club. “Let's see how things go up to Christmas and then we can decide something”, explained Neblung to Lisbon daily Record.

Baştürk Out Of Oslo Clash

Turkey coach Fatih Terim has been issued yet another blow ahead of his side's crunch clash with Norway on Saturday following the news that Yıldıray Baştürk will miss the encounter due to injury...

Yıldıray Baştürk (pictured) will miss Turkey's all-important meeting with Norway on Saturday due to a thigh strain.

The German-born Turkish international midfielder is also a major doubt for the home encounter with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday.

As such, coach Fatih Terim has brought in Yusuf Simsek as cover.

This is a major blow for the international side as the Stuttgart midfielder is one of the more experienced members of the squad.

Indeed, with the likes of Hakan Sukur being dropped, Baştürk, who has been capped over 40 times, would have been considered one of the rocks of the team.

The ex-Wattenscheid youth signed for the German champions in summer on a Bosman deal after three years at Hertha Berlin. Previously he served Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Bochum.

Bayer Leverkusen v Duisburg

Quote:
Fifth place Leverkusen welcome basement club Duisburg to the Bay-Arena on Saturday with three points the expected outcome for Michael Skibbe’s side.

The Werkself will be looking to gain a little more consistency against Rudi Bommer’s the struggling side, following a season that has seen them unable to string together a long run of victories.

Bernd Schneider is back in training, but it seems likely that the game with Duisburg has come a little too soon. Duisburg look set to be without defender Roque Junior.

Duisburg need points fast after losing their last three games. They are currently 17th just a single point ahead of Cottbus.

Third successive win for Bayer

Bayer Leverkusen keeps its winning formula, securing its third victory in a row and solidifying the fifth place in the standings.

Coach Michael Skibbe's team beat MSV Duisburg 4-1 (0-1). After trailing early thanks to Youssef Mokhtari's goal in the 10th minute, Bayer took control in the second half. Sergej Barbarez (47th), Simon Rolfes (66th), Paul Freier (75th, penalty shot), and Theofanis Gekas (81.) secured the win and kept Duisburg from running away with its first ever victory at Leverkusen in Bundesliga history. After losing nine of its last ten matches, Duisburg stays on a relegation spot.

In front of a crowd of 22,500 at sold out BayArena the home site started hungry, putting a lot of pressure on the MSV. After a pass from Freier Stefan Kießling missed the goal in the 3rd minute.

No creativity

Duisburg had to play without Björn Schlicke and Mihay Taharache, who missed the game due to five yellow cards. Still the guests from the Ruhr area got a grip on the game, taking the tempo out of it and playing very aggressive. Duisburg scored on its first chance, ending a 306 minute drought when Mokhtari scored after a nice pass from Manasseh Ishiaku.

Leverkusen had problems after falling behind. Midfielder Bernd Schneider and his creativity were missed badly. The German international missed yet another game due to knee problems.

More pressure in the second half

After the break Skibbe brought in Gekas, who was Bundesliga's top scorer last season. With another striker in play, the guest team was not able to withstand the pressure. Barbarez was wide open scoring the tying goal. From this moment on Bayer dominated and used every chance given by Duisburg's porous defense.

Leverkusen goes on the road next weekend, playing at Berlin. Duisburg hosts 1. FC Nürnberg.

Two familiar faces in Berlin

WIth the loss of Leverkusens Arturo Vidal, who injured himself during training on Tuesday, there is a chance that two familiar faces will show up on Saturday in Berlin.

Bernd Schneider will be on the bus to Berlin coming back from a knee injury and Carsten Ramelow may return to his home city to play in place of Vidal.

"The decision as to which eleven players I put on the pitch is obviously difficult. But I have six, seven guys to choose from, which makes it more difficult for the opposing coach to plan for", said head coach Michael Skibbe.

Bayer leave Berlin with three

With a strong showing, Bayer Leverkusen continued their success in the Bundesliga by winning a fourth straight.

Coach Michael Skibbe's squad earned a well-deserved 3-0 (1-0) victory against Hertha BSC Berlin and secured three important points in the battle for an UEFA Cup position.

Carsten Ramelow scored his first Bundesliga goal (31st min.) in over a year. Midfielders Tranquillo Barnetta (50th min.) and Sergej Barbarez (90th min. +1) made it Hertha's eighth loss of the season. Berlin have failed to win in three straight home matches.
