I am no Bayern bench-warmer, insists German striker Podolski

Written by: AFP

Bayern Munich´s Lukas Podolski sits on the pitch during the Bundesliga match against Hertha Berlin in December 2007. Podolski has hinted he is ready to leave Bayern Munich unless he gets more first team football with the German giants after a frustrating autumn spent mainly on the bench.

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - Lukas Podolski has hinted he is ready to leave Bayern Munich unless he gets more first team football with the German giants after a frustrating autumn spent mainly on the bench.

"I want to succeed here with Bayern, but I know one thing for sure, I am not happy being stuck on the bench," said the 22-year-old ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Cup clash with Greek side Aris Salonika.

Since Italian Luca Toni and German Miroslav Klose were recruited in the summer, Podolski has made nine Bundesliga appearances off the bench and just two league starts this season.

Coach Ottmar Hitzfled has found a place for Podolski's goal-scoring talent as an attacking midfielder alongside German star Bastian Schweinsteiger.

But despite scoring twice in Bayern's 2-2 UEFA Cup draw with Bolton Wanderers last month, the striker is getting frustrated with his lack of goals, having yet to find the back of the net in the league.

Now Podolski, voted the young player of the tournament at last year's World Cup, has said he will look at his options at the end of the season.

"I will wait until the end of the season to see what the situation is.

"I am under contract until 2010 and I want to earn some respect here."

Podolski has failed to make an impression at Bayern since he joined from second division Cologne in the summer of 2006.

Toni hits four as Bayern book UEFA knock-out berth

Written by: AFP

Bayern Munich´s Italian striker Luca Toni celebrates after scoring his third goal vs Aris Thessaloniki during their UEFA Cup football match in Munich. Bayern won 6-0 with four goals from Toni.

BERLIN (AFP) - Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni weighed in with four goals to gift-wrap Bayern Munich's place in the UEFA Cup's first knock-out stage in the 6-0 rout of Greek side Aris on Wednesday night.

This was the win Bayern desperately needed having won just two of their last nine games in all competitions, prior to Wednesday night, including two draws in the UEFA Cup's Group F.

But the win gives the under-pressure Germans the perfect end to their 2007 fixtures and sees Bayern finish as group winners to go through to the last 32 teams with Bolton Wanderers and Sporting Braga.

It has been a difficult few weeks for Bayern with captain Oliver Kahn suspended for last Saturday's 0-0 Bundesliga draw with Hertha Berlin and fined 25,000 euros (36,000 US dollars) for criticising team-mates Franck Ribery and Toni.

Kahn slammed the pair for - in his opinion - inconsistent performances, but Toni made a mockery of that notion by scoring two goals either side of half-time as the Greeks were hammered.

He has now scored 17 goals for Bayern since his summer switch from Fiorentina and is worth every cent of the 12 million euros (17.2 million US dollars) having rewarded the Germans for the investment in him.

Partnering German striker Miroslav Klose in coach Ottmar Hitzfeld's strongest possible line-up, Toni wasted no time putting his side ahead.

Both first-half goals, on 25 and 38 minutes, came from Ribery's creativity in midfield and after the break, Ribery again combined with the Italian after a mix-up in the Greek defence for his hat-trick on 64 minutes.

German international defender Philipp Lahm set up Toni's fourth just two minutes later before fellow defender Christian Lell bagged Bayern's fifth and then Lahm completed the rout with a simple tap in on 81 minutes.

Having hinted about his desire to leave Bayern after too much time amongst the substitutes, Lukas Podolski, voted the best young player at last year's World Cup came off the bench for the tenth time to set up the last two goals.

The win puts Bayern top of Group F with eight points with Braga second and Bolton third, both with six points.

Podolski: frustrated

Polish striker Lukas Podolski is frustrated by lack of playing time at Bayern Munich, who have one of the most formidable striking partnerships.

"I would be stupid if I said everything is fine at Bayern," he told German paper Sueddeutsche.

"It is not an easy time at Bayern, I have to help myself."

Podolski was expected to shine after being named the best young player at the 2006 World Cup.

He failed to live up to expectations and was dropped this season as Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld prefers to field Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose.

The duo scored 18 goals between them to help the Bavarian giants occupy the Bundesliga summit.

The 22-year-old Podolski revealed that some clubs have made inquiries about his availability, but he refused to mention them.

Meanwhile, Bayern defender Lucio expressed his desire to leave and play in the Serie A or the Premiership.

"I still dream of Spain or Italy. I'd love to play there, and perhaps I can fulfill this dream a bit earlier, if the club and I can reach an agreement," he told Deutsche Welle.

Well , when you're playing in a big club and you've got klose, toni, altintop in the FW spot you barely going to get any chances to play , plus you're not that good of a player to be honest , he should go look for another team to play for and stop whinning .

Ribery and Klose

Top German politician Norbert Lammert, president of parliament, has launched a severe attack on 'excessive' spending in football, spotting his criticism on Bundesliga titans Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians spent over $100M last summer to reinforce their squad with some world class talents like Frank Ribery, Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose.

However, it was Bayern's latest transfer, a 14M Euros swap for Sao Paulo's 18-year-old Brazilian defender Breno, that triggered Lammert's comments.

"I am annoyed about the constant and substantial excesses which have blighted sport for years - particularly in football," Lammert told daily Bild.

"If the wealthiest German football club buys a Brazilian teenager for 14 million Euros and gives him an income which most family men can not gain after years of hard work, something is wrong."

Lammert was backed by other German politicians, who also called for limiting the huge amount of funds spent on football in the three-time World Cup winning nation.

LOL , this politician is probably annoyed because he gets paid less than 3/4 of the players on the bayern squad.

Klinsman new Bayern coach in the beginning of the new season.

After Otmar hitzfeld announced that he will be leaving bayern in the beginning of the new season and after the bad performances at the end of the 1st round , Bayern started to look for a new coach to take over this all-star bavarian team , I wish this guy the best of luck , it should be noted that Klinsman recentley coached the german national team in the world cup and managed to take 3rd place , The German natonal team is now being coached by joachim loef (sp) , and Klinsman went over to take a vacation in America not coaching any team .

Butt joins Bayern

Quote:
Former German international goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt has signed a two-year contract with Bayern Munich, the Bundesliga champions confirmed on Wednesday.

Butt arrives from Benfica after leaving the Portuguese giants by mutual agreement which has cost nothing to either side.

The 34-year-old joined Benfica only last summer on a three-year contract but failed to make much of an impression. His new deal will keep him at Bayern until June 2010.

"We're very happy with the transfer because with his international experience Hans-Jorg Butt corresponds perfectly to what we're looking for," said Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenige.

"Hans-Jorg Butt will mainly support our young goalkeeper Michael Rensing in his development."

Capped three times for Germany, Butt has scored 26 goals in the Bundesliga, all penalties. He also took part in the 2002 FIFA World Cup™.

Bayern Munich were knocked out of the Uefa cup at the hands of Zenit St petissburg but they managed to earn the double after beating borussia dortmund in the cup final and getting away from Werder bremen in the title race.
