Bochum 1 Bayern 2 | Schweini strike makes it eight out of ten

Bayern extended their Bundesliga lead and made it eight wins out of ten this term after coming back from a goal down against stubborn VfL Bochum.

A sell-out 30,000 crowd at the rewirpower Stadion witnessed an exciting first half in which Dennis Grote's cracking opener on 11 minutes prompted Bayern to pound the home goal in an effort to level, but a string of chances went begging until Franck Ribery's backheeled equaliser ten minutes before the break.

Schweini breaks deadlock

The league leaders found chances harder to come by against the deep-lying home defence in the second half, but the Reds persevered and were rewarded twelve minutes from time when sub Bastian Schweinsteiger converted from the outstanding Ribery's pull-back.

The goal finally broke the home side's obstinate resistance and Bayern comfortably held out to record an eighth victory in ten league fixtures, taking Munich onto 26 points and extending their advantage at the top of the table to six points.

Fit-again Klose restored

Following the break for internationals, Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld made two changes to the side which comprehensively saw off Nuremberg two weeks ago, restoring Mark van Bommel in place of Andreas Ottl and bringing back fit-again Miroslav Klose up front, with Bastian Schweinsteiger the man to miss out.

Once FIFA referee Herbert Fandel had whistled play underway on a cold but sunny afternoon in the Ruhr Valley, the sides showed promising attacking intent in the opening exchanges, but Bayern were caught cold when Grote picked up the ball in midfield, rode a couple of half-hearted tackles and strode on to beat Michael Rensing with a thumping left-foot drive from the edge of the box.

Chances go begging

Cameroon star Joel Epalle threatened with a run and shot a minute later, but that was the last of the home side as an attacking force for the rest of the first half as the league leaders launched a furious assault on home keeper Jan Lastuvka's goal.

The Czech keeper palmed away Altintop's free-kick before over-elaboration denied Luca Toni a clear-cut chance. Ribery's run and shot shaved the upright and the lively France star laid off for Van Bommel to drive narrowly wide.

Altintop hit the side-netting with a surprise effort as he shaped to cross, and the Turkey international's next intervention was a centre which Toni planted just over the bar. Klose and Demichelis followed suit with free headers, before the Germany striker failed to capitalise on a defensive error, sliding the ball wide with only Lastuvka to beat.

Franck's leveller

When it finally arrived on 35 minutes, the long-overdue equaliser was a much less simple affair than many of the chances which had preceded it. Klose stole possession from the always nervous Marc Pfertzel on the edge of the box and arrowed a ball into the danger zone, where Ribery's backheel evaded a scrum of VfL defenders and dribbled over the line.

A speculative Van Bommel effort aside, the sides took a breather through to the interval, but Bayern emerged the stronger after the restart and Lastuvka was forced into a brave stop when Ze Roberto bore down on goal after 50 minutes.

But the home defence looked a lot more sorted now, and although Ribery tried a curler and Toni scuffed a 71st minute opening, Bochum were menacing on the break as both Oliver Schröder and the mobile Epalle tested Rensing's alertness.

Late winner

Bayern were still visibly chasing the victory when Schweinsteiger took over from the tiring Altintop after 72 minutes, and it was the Germany midfielder who wrong-footed the otherwise immaculate Lastuvka to net Ribery's excellent cut-back and complete the turnaround six minutes later.

The wind was taken out of the home side's sails now and the Reds survived the closing stages without undue difficulty to continue their scintillating league form this season.

Reaction to VfL Bochum v Bayern | Hoeneß: Ribery’s class made the difference

The Bayern camp was understandably delighted with an eighth win in ten attempts so far this term, but coach Ottmar Hitzfeld enjoyed a touch of good fortune with his substitutions in the 2-1 success away to VfL Bochum. “The subs gave us fresh impetus," the General acknowledged, thinking primarily of match-winner Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Reaction to VfL Bochum v Bayern

Uli Hoeneß: “It was mainly tough going for us today. Normally you’d expect to win in Bochum, but we had to work very hard because Bochum played extremely well. They were resolute and hard-working. Lucio and Demichelis played in South America in 35 degree heat on Wednesday, and you could see we found it hard to get going in the first 20 minutes. But there’s extra class in this team. We’ve again seen how Franck Ribéry can turn a game around. He scored a goal and laid on the second. We have players capable of single-handedly settling a match – that’s the difference from last season.“

Ottmar Hitzfeld: “We were in control but went behind to a long-range effort. We turned up the heat after that and should certainly have scored earlier than we did, we might even have led at half-time. It became more difficult after that, Bochum changed their tactics to contain us. The subs gave us fresh impetus, and we were fortunate in that Ribery has hit peak form again. He was the best player on the field today. And Bastian Schweinsteiger gave his critics the right answer by scoring a good goal.”

Mark van Bommel: “We’re strong in every area at the moment, even when the pressure’s on. Each one of us has class, that was obvious again today. But we’re not invincible, and apart from the League Cup, we’ve won nothing yet. We have to show our ability for a full season, and if we succeed, we can call ourselves a decent team. But I have a good feeling about it.“

Marcell Jansen: “It wasn’t easy for us. Bochum gave it everything and they’re good on the break. They played well. We had chances even before we equalised. We’re a good attacking side, but it’s still important for us to keep it tight. We don’t care about tables and points, we just want to win every match.“

Marcel Koller (Bochum coach): “Everyone thought Bayern would blow us away, but that wasn’t the case. We need to show the same resolve in our forthcoming matches. We’ve been in this position before, we’ll retain our belief and we’ll be patient."

Dennis Grote (Bochum goalscorer): “Looking at the course of the match, we might have expected more from it. We’ve taken the lead but we’ve gone and let in two unnecessary goals, where the ball dribbled over the line. It was certainly irritating, because it was obvious from the course of the match we could have got something. We didn’t run and hide, we put up strong resistance.“

Hitzfeld´s delight with midfield duo

Written by: AFP

Bayern Munich´s Franck Ribery (R) is seen here in September 2007. Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld says he is delighted with the form of midfielders Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger as his side opened a six-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld says he is delighted with the form of midfielders Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger as his side opened a six-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

Bayern had to come from behind at VfL Bochum on Saturday to seal a 2-1 win as French star Ribery and Schweinsteiger scored either side of half-time to maintain their side's unbeaten record.

The German giants top the league table with 26 points after ten games and are six-points clear of second-placed Werder Bremen.

But Bochum took a surprise lead when Germany under-21 striker Dennis Grote scored with a superb shot on 11 minutes.

It was not the start Bayern wanted with second-string goalkeeper Michael Rensing deputising for captain Oliver Kahn who is recovering from an elbow operation.

But Bayern were back on level terms after 35 minutes when French star Franck Ribery equalised with a deft touch as he flicked striker Miroslav Klose's pass past diving Bochum 'keeper Jan Lastuvka.

And German international Bastian Schweinsteiger came off the bench to seal the win with a strike on 78 minutes.

"Schweinsteiger's substitution gave us fresh impetus and we were fortunate in that Ribery has hit peak form again," said Hitzfeld.

"Franck was the best player on the field.

"And Schweinsteiger gave his critics the right answer by scoring a good goal."

With less than a third of the season played Bayern already look set to pick up their 21st crown as German champions, but Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel insists his side still have it all to do.

"We're strong in every area at the moment, even when the pressure's on," he said.

"But we're not invincible, and apart from the League Cup, we've won nothing yet.

"We have to show our ability for a full season, and if we succeed, we can call ourselves a decent team. But I have a good feeling about it."

Bayern face Red Star Belgrade away on Thursday in the UEFA Cup.

Man of the Match | ‘Running man’ Ribéry reaps volley of praise

German employees who travel to work in a car, using public transport, on a pushbike or on a motorbike can deduct costs of between five and 30 Eurocents per kilometre from their annual tax return. Unfortunately, the allowance does not apply to persons who make the daily journey on foot.

That’s bad luck for Franck Ribéry, the player described by coach Ottmar Hitzfeld as Bayern’s “running man”, as he would be in for a whopping tax rebate if he was permitted to deduct the kilometres he covers on the field of play. The France star was a key contributor to his side’s hard-earned 2-1 victory away to VfL Bochum, and was subsequently labelled “the best man on the park” by no less an authority than Hitzfeld himself.

Pace and stamina aplenty

“That’s the difference compared to last year, where we sometimes fell behind but didn’t have an individual with the class to turn a game round,” commented general manager Uli Hoeneß, praising the club’s new number seven to the skies. “Today it was Franck Ribéry, who not only scored a goal, he brilliantly set up the winner and also kept his cool in some genuinely tricky situations.“

“I’ve rarely worked with a footballer who’s so quick and at the same time boasts so much stamina,” Hitzfeld agreed, thoroughly impressed by the 24-year-old Frenchman’s exceptional work rate. Ribery equalised In the 35th minute with a cheeky back-heel and later showed tremendous vision to pick out Bastian Schweinsteiger for the 78th-minute winner.

Still only human

The performance was not necessarily to be expected, Hitzfeld pointed out, given Franck had twice appeared for his country in the previous seven days. “I was surprised how fresh he was,” the coach admitted, revealing he had considered withdrawing Ribery from the action after 70 minutes or so. “But he was still in great shape,” Hitzfeld said with astonishment, “I was amazed, it’s not something I was expecting.“

The summer arrival from Olympique Marseille was enjoying a “superb season, although he did go off the boil briefly,“ the coach analysed. “That showed he is in fact only human and has his limits.“ However, that in turn highlighted Franck’s excellence in Bochum. “He’s capable of summoning up every reserve in his body, he has real character and a total desire to win.“

Ahead of the pack

His team-mates are well aware of the class added by the 1.70 metre / 5 ft 7 in Ribéry. “Having him here is tremendous,” said Mark van Bommel, “he’s genuine class. And we all work to help him do his stuff.” The match stats from Bochum showed that Ribéry delivered the most shots at goal (3), provided the most assists (7), and played the ball more than any other player. His total of 95 touches was twice as many as Bochum’s best, Dennis Grote on 47.

Last but not least, when Ribéry does score, the effort is usually spectacular, as he followed up a lobbed penalty against Werder Bremen with Saturday’s delicate flick. Asked if it was the best goal of his career, the player had an answer ready: “No. That was for Marseille two years ago. From 37 metres.“

Comeback in sight | Ismaël: ‘Like being trapped in a tunnel'

Thursday marks the 190th day since Valérien Ismaël last made a competitive appearance for Bayern, a two-minute cameo as a substitute against Leverkusen last April. His most recent 90-minuten run-out for the senior side came against Borussia Dortmund even longer ago, 527 days to be precise, or almost a year and a half. Ismaël’s long wait to resume playing could come to an end when Bayern travel to face FK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) on Thursday. “I’m fit and I’m ready,” he declared on Monday.

The player seems almost unwilling to believe his time has finally come. “I’m assuming Micho will take his place as usual,” remarked the 32-year-old, reacting to news of Martin Demichelis’ illness. Daniel van Buyten may be ruled out with a bruised thigh, leaving Ismaël as the only recognised centre-half available to partner Lucio, rookie pro Mats Hummels aside.

Painful experience

Ismaël has understood the value of patience during his long spell on the sidelines. “I always used to want too much, too soon,” he recalled, “but a body has its limits.“ It is a lesson he has learned through painful experience since his double leg fracture in August 2006. He now rates his first attempt at a comeback as “simply too early.” The result was another operation on his left leg in April 2007.

Ismaël finally took to the field of play again in August, featuring in friendlies against Barcelona and Grasshoppers Zürich, and enjoying a run-out with the reserves in the third division, but the knee reacted and he was again forced to slow down. “It’s been a long road back. It was like being trapped in a tunnel, with the feeling I’d never emerge. I’ve had a lot of bad luck,” he honestly admits, hoping the misery is now behind him once and for all.

One step at a time

“I don’t feel any pain and I’ve prepared myself well over the last few weeks,” the Frenchman reported, although he has no intention of pushing his luck now. “I need to be patient and regain confidence,” he said, “my first goal is to make it to Christmas with no setbacks.“ His aim is to resume fighting for a place in the team during the winter training programme.

Ismaël’s contract expires at the end of the season, but the 32-year-old is relaxed about his uncertain future. “I’d like to stay here,” is all he will say, “but I’m not pressuring anyone and I’m not thinking about contracts. I’m just delighted to be back with the team. Everything else will take care of itself.“ Valérien Ismaël has become a model of patience.

Bayern keeper Kahn returns to training

Bayern Munich's veteran keeper Oliver Kahn has returned to training three weeks after an operation on his right elbow, the German league leaders said on Monday.

Kahn, who retires at the end of the season aged 38, had an operation earlier this month for an infection on his right elbow and has been replaced since then by former under-21 international Michael Rensing.

Italiener pfeift in Belgrad

UEFA have appointed the referee for the match.

It's Matteo Trefoloni, a 38-year-old Italian.

He has been refereeing in the European scene since 2004.

Bayern never played a match under him as a referee.

European champions meet in Belgrade

Former European champions meet in a third European tie as FK Crvena Zvezda look to maintain their unbeaten home record against FC Bayern München in Group E.

• The two sides have met in two previous UEFA club competition ties.

• In the 1979/80 UEFA Cup, Bayern won 2-0 at home against the then Yugoslavian side, progressing to the quarter-finals despite a 3-2 second leg defeat in Belgrade.

• 'Red Star' avenged that defeat in the 1990/91 European Champion Clubs' Cup, winning 2-1 in Munich and drawing 2-2 at home in the semi-finals, setting them up for their final meeting with Olympique de Marseille, which they won on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Bari.

• Thus, Crvena Zvezda have never been beaten at home by Bayern, regarded by many as favourites to win the 2007/08 UEFA Cup.

• Crvena Zvezda have played 28 games in total against German sides in European competition. They have won 12 of those, drawn four and lost 12. At home, they have won nine, drawn four and lost one – with that lone defeat coming as VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach earned a 3-0 win in Belgrade in the second round of the 1977 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

• Bayern have played just eight games against Serbian sides, winning four, drawing two and losing two. In Serbia they have won one, drawn two and lost one.

• Crvena Zvezda's Portuguese midfielder João Lucas celebrates his 28th birthday on 25 October, the day of the Bayern match.

• Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld led two sides against Crvena Zvezda at the start of his coaching career. He is yet to secure a victory against the Serbian side.

Injury concerns | Ribéry, Micho and Van Buyten doubtful

Three days ahead of Bayern’s first UEFA Cup group fixture away to FK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade), a clutch of key players have reported in sick or injured. Centre-halves Martin Demichelis and Daniel van Buyten may not be fit to play, and midfield dynamo Franck Ribéry is also struggling for fitness. “All three are doubtful for Thursday,“ Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld informed fcbayern.de.

Ribéry felt a hamstring go stiff after Saturday’s trip to Bochum and reported to the medical unit for treatment on Monday, although the France star was able to go jogging afterwards. Demichelis saw the doctor in the morning for medicine against the flu, while Van Buyten continues to struggle with a bruised thigh sustained on duty for Belgium last week.

Positive news of Lucio

Brazil captain Lucio, troubled by a stomach upset over the weekend, is on the road to recovery and completed an individual training programme in the weights room on Monday. He is not considered doubtful for Belgrade, meaning Hitzfeld should have at least one recognised centre-half available for selection. In the event Demichelis and Van Buyten are both ruled out, one of Valérien Ismaël, Christian Lell, Andreas Ottl or rookie professional Mats Hummels would likely partner the Brazilian.

Ismaël felt Demichelis would report fit in time for Thursday’s showdown. “I’m assuming Micho will take his place as usual. If not, I’m available,“ the 32-year-old declared after resuming team training last week following a year out with injury. He and all the squad players will be closely monitoring their team-mates’ state of health in the coming days.

*sighs*

Here I am, sitting here and waiting to watch Red Star play tomorrow night and get crushed, demolished, tortured.
