Bochum v Bielefeld

Quote:
Bochum and Bielefeld meet at the Rewirpower Stadion with both sides with an identical record so far this season. Four wins, three draws and six defeats have seen both teams drop into the bottom half of the table.

The only thing that separates them is their goal difference. Bielefeld however have the leakiest defence in the Bundesliga having let in 28 goals in their 13 games.

René Renno looks set to keep the keeper’s jersey ahead of regular first-choice Jan Lastuvka. For Duisburg Zuma is likely to come into the attack for the injured Halfar.

Third straight win for Bochum

Thanks to Marcin Mieciel's first two-goal-performance in the Bundesliga, VfL Bochum won its third straight and secured a spot in the middle of the standings.

The Polish striker scored the first and second goal in Bochum's 3-0 (2-0) victory in an Westphalian match up against Arminia Bielefeld, which continues to struggle on the road. The sixth game without a win away from home in a row puts coach Ernst Middendorp on the hot seat. Bielefeld has gotten only one point and was outscored 1:21 in those six games.

It didn't take Mieciel long to put Bochum on the right track. He scored his third and fourth goal of the season in the 12th and 15th minute, respectively. In front of a crowd of 20,478 Christoph Dabrowski sealed the deal in the 55th minute.

Bielefeld without five regulars

Stanislav Sestak assisted on Bochum's first two strikes, having no defender in his face coming over the right side. Mieciel had a chance for a hat trick, but his header in the 36th just missed the net.

Arminia didn't give up after Bochum's quick strikes, but the club looked too harmless in front of the opposing goal. Due to injury problems Middendorp had to replace many regulars. Daniel Halfar, Christian Eigler, and Tobias Rau missed the match as well as Markus Schuler and Mathias Hain. Both have been taken out of the lineup shortly before the game due to a flu. Rowen Fernandez replaced Hain in goal, giving his Bundesliga debut. He played well and it were his saves that kept Bochum from blowing the game even more open.

Zdebel won't play at Schalke

VfL coach Marcel Koller almost sent the same players on the pitch that won the previous two games, making only one change. Captain Tomasz Zdebel played after recovering from an injury, replacing Daniel Imhof. Zdebel though will not be able to play against local rival Schalke 04 next Saturday after picking up his fifth yellow card. Koller brought Imhof right after the break.

Dabrowski, who scored Bochum's third goal, had a chance earlier. But Fernandez denied his shot. On the other side Rene Renno, who again played in place of Jan Lastuvka, kept Bielefeld from scoring, making a nice save on Jörg Böhme's free kick in the 52nd minute. Just when the guest team was waking up, Dabrowski scored his second goal of the season.

While Bochum visits Schalke next weekend, Bielefeld hosts Bayern München.

Schalke grab third Derby

With their third Derby win of the season, Schalke 04 have made progress in the catch up race in the Bundesliga. Schalke defeated VfL Bochum 1-0 (1-0). They now only need five points to earn a spot in the Champions League.

The third success against their rivals came on the back of a 4-1 win against Borussia Dortmund and a 2-0 victory against MSV Duisburg.

For Bochum, their meteoric rise has been momentarily grounded. After three straight wins, Marcel Koller's squad missed the chance to tie a club record of four straight set in 1980.

The only score of the match came from captain Marcelo Bordon, who headed the ball in for what would be the deciding goal in the 32nd minute after a corner kick by Ivan Rakitic.

Schalke 1 Bochum 0

Schalke gained the second win that Mirko Slomka has demanded as they look to end the first half of the season positively.

The Königsblauen took the lead after 32 minutes rather predictably from a set-piece. Rakitic flighted in a free-kick from the right, and with Drsek not getting tight enough to Bordon, Schalke’s captain headed in past a helpless Rene Renno.

Halil Altintop missed an absolute sitter four minutes before the break, firing over the bar after Kuranyi had laid off a Rakitic cross. In the end, one goal was enough to seal all three points for ‘die Knappen’.

Bundesliga Round-Up: Werder Go Top, Cottbus Off The Bottom
Werder Bremen beat Hamburg 2-1 in the Nord-derby to go top of the league- albeit for 24 hours. There were important wins for Schalke, Bayer Leverkusen and Dortmund.

Energie Cottbus grabbed a rare win, which has taken them off the bottom of the pile.

Miller back in training

Bundesliga surprise package Karlsruher SC have goalkeeper Markus Miller back in training, a whole lot earlier than expected.

The keeper, who had been instrumental in KSC's great season with six clean sheets in eleven matches, had torn the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee 39 days ago in the goalless draw in Rostock.

Conservative treatment

Miller had played on after the injury and opted for conservative treatment afterwards.

The keeper hopes to be back in Bundesliga action when the season restarts after the winter break.

Entertainment in Bochum

VfL Bochum and Karlsruher SC have shared four goals in an entertaining match. A Bochum striker was unstoppable and bagged a brace.

Stanislav Sestak opened the scoring 18 minutes into the match after good work from Martin Mieciel.

But the lead lasted just six minutes. Rene Renno managed to somehow keep out Alexander Iashvili's six-metre volley, but Tamas Hajnal was hit by the rebound and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

KSC then took the lead ten minutes into the second half when Christian Timm turned Renno to set up Sebastian Freis for an empty-net goal.

But again the lead didn't last long. Sestak bagged his second with a header from a corner just three minutes later.

In the end both teams were rewarded with a point for a good and entertaining Bundesliga match.

Matchreport

2:2

2:2 against Karlsruhe

Stanislav Sestak's two goals did not last for a win for our VfL. In an exciting match, the Slovak secured the lead for our team (19. minute). Karlsruhe, however, was able to equalise already before the break. During the second half, the guests took over the lead, before Sestak's second goal brought the equalisation. Unfortunately - despite of further chances - nothing more than a draw could be achieved.

In the last home match of the current year, our VfL met the promoted KSC in the rewirpowerSTADION. One week ago, Bochum lost 0:1 against Schalke and Karlsruhe lost 0:2 against Cottbus. VfL coach Marcel Koller had to change his team. Due to Anthar Yahisa's rupture of a muscle fibre, Marc Pfertzel filled his position in the inner defense and Philipp Bönig took on Pfertzel's position. After having overcome the angina, he has suffered from, Christoph Dabrowski today was part of the opening squad again. On the side of the guest team, Ede Becker had to do without six players: Markus Miller, Christopher Reinhard, Bradley Carnell, Edmond Kapllani, Christian Eichner and Godfried Aduobe.

The match was still young when it gathered momentum. After five minutes, Rene Renno brilliantly saved a Porcello free kick. On the other side, Marcin Mieciel served Sestak - but, unfortunately, Eggimann punched away Sestak's lob. In the 18th minute, our forwarding duo succeeded at least: Danny Fuchs' long ball reached Mieciel, who again passed on to Stanislav Sestak. Our Slovak striker hit the target from a distance of 14 metres. His seventh season goal secured the VfL lead.

The joy, however, lasted only for a short time - in the 24th minute, KSC was able to equalise. First, our keeper punched a Timm shot, nevertheless, Tamas Hajnal's header landed in the net. Also after the equalisation, the spectators saw a diversified match, but the VfL was not as dangerous as they had acted at the beginning. The guests from Baden stood very compactly and closed spaces. Becker's team, however, did not act dangerous in the offensive. Thus, the 1:1 draw mirrored the first half action.

Our team started the second half more pressuring again. Joel Epalle and Sestak only missed the goal by centimetres. Karlsruhe, on the other hand, did not react impressed and took over the lead through a Sebastian Freis goal. Bochum followed suit: no minute later, Sestak headed Epalle's corner into the net. Now, everything was possible again. A bitter pill, however, was the substitution of Marcel Maltritz, due to an injury. In the 60th minute, Pavel Drsek came onto the pitch to fill his position.

After the equalisation, the match was very balanced again. None of the two teams was able to set the course, and thus, most of the action took part in the midfield. Ten minutes from time, Koller brought on Bechmann for Mieciel, to strengthen the offensive. And his first action was an assist for Sestak, who only scarcely missed the target. During the last minutes of the match, the VfL excited more pressure again, and really wanted to score the crucial goal. Nevertheless, the match ended with a 2:2 draw.

Our VfL, who showed a good performance, had to accept the result against a very compactly acting KSC. In the last match of the year, Our team will meet Hansa Rostock next Sunday. Certainly, our men want to take their leave with a victory.
