The scoring came from Kai Bulow (7th min.) and Sebastian Hahnge (43rd min.). For Bochum, it was the second loss in the past six matches. The defeat denied them the opportunity to put themselves four points out of the relegation zone.

Hansa treated the 15,000 in attendance to an offensive show from the very start. The changes in formation introduced by coach Frank Pagelsdorf paid off in the match. Zafer Yelen's new role bore fruits when he brought the ball from the corner into a scoring opportunity via Christian Rahn, who set it up for Bulow to make it 1-0.

VfL goalie Rene Renno was challenged again in the 28th minute when he had to handle a 25-metre free kick by Tobias Rathgeb, only to have to face an attempt by Bulow (29th min.). But Renno was unable to stop Dexter Langen's assist to make it 2-0 off Hahnge.

Playing without Marcel Maltritz, Ivo Ilicevic and Oliver Schroder Bochum, Bochum's best scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes came from Stanislav Sestak (33rd min.) and Danny Fuchs (42nd min.). But Rostock goalie Jorg Hahnel did not have to extend himself to deny either attempt.

Bulow had a tremendous night and opened up the second half with an attempt in the 48th minute that was handled brilliantly by Renno. Hahnge missed two good chances to extend the lead in the 68th and 72nd minute. Rostock remained dangerous throughout the match, while Bochum run out of steam, with only one noteworthy late attempt by Pavel Drsek (85th min.).
