A Strong Beginning And A Stronger Collapse - This Team Remains A Mystery
[4.11.] Borussia Dortmund wasted a chance to move into eighth place and with it a path to the top third of the Bundesliga standings. Six days after the impressive achievement in earning a goal-less draw with Bayern Munich and three days after the hard-fought advancement to the German Cup round of sixteen, it was incomprehensible how the team let such a great chance slip away.
Hannover’s second goal. Many Dortmund players, few Hannover players.
"It is unbelievable. We made Hannover strong", cursed Florian Kringe, who was over the ninety minutes Borussia´s only convincing player on this November afternoon in Hannover. BVB had just lost a match they could not afford to lose by a score of 2-1....

Standings Situation:
Seven points behind the fifth-placed team (Hannover) and five points ahead of the the sixteenth-placed team (Nürnberg). Autumn 2007 finds BVB in no man´s land in the standings. Their record is four victories, two draws and six losses.

Match Statistics:
21-13 shots at goal, 13-4 corners, 56 percent possession and 52 percent one-on-one battles for the ball won all spoke clearly for a team who would have been happy to keep the margin of defeat down after the first twenty minutes. In the end, Hannover 96 earned a well-deserved victory. Florian Kringe was involved in half of the thirteen Dortmund shots at goal. Dede had the most ball contact for BVB and was the strongest player on the pitch in terms of one-on-one battles for the ball.

Trends and Background:
For 20 minutes, BVB played like a leading team. Tinga, the ball secure Buckley, the strong-running Dede and Kringe pushed the BVB offensive game. During this phase Hannover was barely able to get out of its own half. BVB held a 6-1 shots at goal advantage. Good goal chances fell to Petric in the first minute, Valdez was foiled by a nice Enke save in the tenth minute, Kringe in the fifteenth minute and Kuba in the seventeenth minute. BVB could have led the match by a goal or two after this phase.

After this, Borussia Dortmund adjusted their game.

Nelson Valdez against Steven Cherundolo.
"Doll´s team no longer pursued the match with any consequence. They lost their aggressiveness in battles for the ball and noticably reduced their run effort", wrote the Ruhr Nachrichten. Clearly, only one team was playing football. Hannover 96. The shots at goal statistic read 9-0 for the Niedersachsen club. However, that would not have won this match were it not for two asinine plays (these words were used in the locker room).

With the score still 0-0, near the corner of his own penalty area, Philipp Degen took Sergio Pinto to the ground in a way that made it look like he cleared his path with a machete. However, there was really no danger in the play. The ball wasn´t even close to a dangerous position. Even Pinto was amazed. "I felt I would not get to the ball", said the Hannover midfielder. "I also sensed Degen would not get to the ball, but he attacked me anyhow!" Huszti converted the penalty kick for the match´s opening goal. (Ruhr Nachrichten)

As Dortmund conceded in Leverkusen to tie that match at 2-2, one would believe such a thing would not be allowed to be repeated. In the sixty-third minute, nine Dortmund players were back for Hannover´s twelfth corner of the match. Amazingly, Rosenthal, one of the five Hannover players was able to win his header battle with Klimowicz, heading the ball against the crossbar. Schulz, another of the five Hannover players against nine Dortmund players, headed in the rebound for the 2-0 Hannover lead.

Alex Frei Undergoes Successful Surgery In Switzerland
[6.11.] BVB striker Alex Frei was operated on successfully today (Tuesday) at the Linde Clinic in Biel, Switzerland. During the forty-five minute procedure, the renowned surgeon Professor Dr. Roland Biedert removed scar tissue which had built up in Frei´s right calf after tearing muscles in the calf twice.
BVB Team Physician Dr. Markus Braun was present for the surgery and afterward spoke of a "successful procedure." The doctors believe the time Alex Frei will need to rehabilitate enough to play again will be three months. The Swiss international captain and BVB´s top goal-getter of last season will spend the next two weeks at the Linde Clinic.

Sharp Wind Blowing At BVB - The Coach Threatens Some Stars With Banishment To The Stands
[7.11.] A sharp wind blows over the BVB Hohenbuschei Training Center in the Dortmund suburb of Brackel. That goes doubly for Borussia Dortmund´s licensed professional players. For Thomas Doll is being everything but friendly. The times, like during the bad season start or the dark English Week, when Doll stood before the team and deflected all criticism are gone. "I want to finally see some performance!"
Thomas Doll is everything but satisfied.
There is a chance that some regulars could find themselves on the bench on Saturday. Or some could even watch the match from a vantage point they are unaccustomed to. Block 27 of the West Stands. From the twenty-two man roster only the injured Alexander Frei and Daniel Gordon will be out. Amateur players Sahr Senesie and Christopher Nöthe, who were ordered to train with the professionals as part of Doll´s reaction to the disappointing performance in Hannover, could move into their roster places against Eintracht Frankfurt. And if future hopefuls Tyrala and Vrzogic take a step forward, then two regulars will have to sit in the stands on Saturday. "That is very much a possibility", said the coach. "That is up to me! And the ones concerned don´t have to be surprised if they are not on the roster against Frankfurt." Only Weidenfeller, Dede, Tinga, Kringe and Petric are guaranteed places on the roster.

Doll is pulling on the bridles. He pulled and twisted during an extra training session, which was short in time, but intense. "Like the Duracell Rabbit, they had to run, and run, and run", reported the Ruhr Nachrichten on Tuesday´s training.

Sebastian Kehl has only played on the first match day this season.
Doll will change players and also change the system again. In the 4-1-4-1, the team was surprising against Bayern Munich on defense and offense. However, they also did not score a goal during the 170 minutes in this system. Despite this, a return to the midfield diamond is also unlikely. "If you play this system, you need a true number ten", said Doll. At this time, a true number ten is something BVB cannot claim. Mladen Petric scored his eight goals in matches he lined up as a striker for. Giovanni Federico was very successful in this system at Karlsruhe , but mostly on the right side. Doll´s conclusion: "Even if I prefer this system (with the midfield diamond), I cannot consciously pressure the boys to play it."

If the "flat four" midfield or as it actually is, a system with offensive wingers and a "double-six" as it was used against FC Bayern and/or Eintracht Frankfurt remains, then a Sebastian Kehl comeback is closer to occurring. "There is a good chance he could be in the starting lineup", in Doll´s view. Kehl beside Tinga, who is to train again on Thursday after adductor problems. "Everyone must grit their teeth (and play on)", demands Doll before the upcoming international break. "Then (during the break), we can lick our wounds."

Kringe can play the left side of midfield and on the right, Doll can choose between Kuba, Federico, Nöthe and Senesie. Klimowicz would benefit from the system change as a second striker. And at the back? Philipp Degen had some convincing performances before he put himself into the line of fire with his foul in Hannover . However, he did not commit the foul through apathy, but rather anxiousness.

In the German Cup Borussia (Markus Brzenska shown here) were able to defeat Frankfurt by a 2-1 score.
The tactical formation is one thing. The team´s attitude is a completely different issue. "This match is important so we can have seventeen points on Saturday evening and put some space between us and those below us", said Doll before the battle with the Hessen club (Frankfurt). "I will not speak of any connection with the top places in the standings so we will not play as we just did away from home."

Frankfurt are coming into SIGNAL IDUNA PARK strengthened. Eintracht still does not have an away victory, however they have earned points after conceding the first two goals in matches in Bielefeld and Cottbus. They were also lucky enough to earn a point after falling behind 2-1 in Bremen. And finally, the Hessen club earned a goalless draw at FC Bayern Munich. Backup goalkeeper Nikolov and backup defender Galindo were outstanding in that match. However, coach Friedhelm Funkel has already put regulars Pröll and Kyrgiakos back into the lineup. Also, offensive options Meier and Streit are again available.

When two teams meet again in such a short time, only in the rarest cases is the result repeated. "We must invest more because Frankfurt will be anxious to avenge the German Cup match", coach Thomas Doll assumed. Doll ruled out any underestimation of Frankfurt during the 2-1 Cup victory a week ago. "We did not win 4-0, but rather had to come back to win a very tough match after falling behind."
