Important three points

MSV Duisburg picked up three important points against 1. FC Nürnberg.

On the back of their second victory in eight home matches, MSV moved closer to a position out of the relegation zone. For their part, Nürnberg missed their chance to get some separation from being relegated.

Grlic decides it

In front of 20,313 spectators, captain Ivica Grlic scored a lucky decider for MSV in the 72nd minute.

The visitors had their chances, Nicky Adler (55th minute) and Marco Engelhardt (64th min.), but both shots only found the aluminium.

Competing with the strikers

Following the early-season scoring feats of Bayern München new boys Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, fellow summer signing Franck Ribery is now showing his prowess in front of goal as well.

With the two forwards on nine goals apiece after matchday 15, the pacy French international took his tally for the season to four when he grabbed the all-important goal in Bayern's 1-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld on their most recent outing.

More goals than assists

That represents something of a paradigm shift for Ribery who gained his reputation largely as a "mere" provider rather than a finisher at his former club, Olympique Marseille. In 25 league appearances for the club in 2006-07 he scored five goals and set up eight more.

In his 14 Bundesliga games to date, Ribery has thus notched almost as many goals as he managed in the whole of his last season at Marseille.

Plenty of time left

On the matter of assists, his record at Bayern to date is not quite so impressive - two in 14, as opposed to an average of almost one every three games (8 in 25) in France last season.

But with only 15 rounds of the Bundesliga played, there is plenty of time yet for Ribery to boost that tally, as well of course as continuing to improve his own strike rate.

Doing just fine

So, as the statistics show, Franck Ribery is doing just fine at Bayern, and has clearly had little problem adapting to the style of play in the Bundesliga.

Altintop faces long lay-off

With three matches still remaining before the winter break, Bayern have suffered another injury setback after a midfielder underwent surgery.

Midfield ace Hamit Altintop underwent surgery in Augsburg on Tuesday to repair a damaged meniscus in his right knee.

The Bundesliga leaders will be without the utility man for the matches against MSV Duisburg, Hertha BSC Berlin and Aris Salonika.

Back in January

However, the Turkey international is expected to recover fitness in time to report back on schedule for winter training in January 2008.

Altintop, the only player to appear in all the club's 22 competitive matches so far this term, joins an absentee list also definitely including Marcell Jansen (ligaments) and Lucio (suspended for two further Bundesliga matches).

Schweinsteiger and Sagnol back?

On the other hand, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Willy Sagnol could yet feature in the matches remaining before Christmas.

Schweinsteiger has more or less shaken off a problem with an inflamed knee, but assistant coach Michael Henke has advised that the staff would "wait and see whether there's a reaction. Sagnol bruised a calf in training last week.

Ismael joins Hannover 96 Valerian Ismael will join Hanover for an undisclosed fee in January.

"Ismael will sign a contract until 2010", FC Bayern Press Spokesman Markus Hörwick confirmed to bundesliga.de.

The 32-year-old had been at Bayern since July 2005. The Frenchman has played 31 Bundesliga matches, eight games in Europe and six in the DFB Cup since.

Bayern host Chinese Olympic team

German record champions FC Bayern München will play two matches against the Chinese Olympic team, in January and in May.

The first leg of the Allianz Cup will take place in the Allianz Arena on January 12 (15:00).

The second leg in China will probably be played at the end of May.

The Chinese Olympic team, coached by the Serbian Ratomir Dujkovic, is rated as the strongest team in China.

"The Bundesliga title is our priority"

Read what FC Bayern General Manager Uli Hoeneß had to say on the club's official website prior to the match against MSV Duisburg.

Uli Hoeneß on...

...his future as general manager:

I have a contract until the end of 2009, more than two years from now, and then we were planning an overhaul of the board. We'll see how it unfolds. We know the state of play until 2009, then we'll see what happens.

...this season's sporting targets:
One thing is clear: we desperately want to win the German championship. After a poor season last year without a trophy, the Bundesliga is our priority.

...job-related pressure and stress:
You get periods when it's not a problem, if the team's playing well like at the start of the season, or when you feel you've done a decent job. But then you get weeks which don't go so well, and it's not always easy. You suffer certain setbacks in every job, but you've just got to fight back. Up to now it's gone pretty well.

"I've been unlucky"

With the benefit of hindsight, the omens at the start of Valerien Ismael's spell with Bayern were a trifle gloomy.

His first training session after moving from Bremen to Munich in summer 2005 was accompanied by a torrential downpour, and he was sent off in his first Bundesliga appearance for the men in red.

"The club has done everything"

The 32-year-old is now set to join Hannover 96 on January 1, but confessed to "a feeling of sadness on Thursday, as he will no longer accomplish his self-proclaimed mission with Bayern.

"I wanted to give the club something in return for what it did for me, explained the centre-half, effectively sidelined for the last 18 months after a complex leg break.

Condemned to a second-string role in Bavaria, he will now attempt a new start in Hanover. "The club has done everything it could to complete the transfer, and I'll always be grateful for that, Ismael declared.

Double winner in 2006

The likeable Frenchman insisted he would be leaving with "happy memories" of his two-and-a-half years in Munich. "It all went very well for me in my first season. We won the Double, he recalls, "but I've been very unlucky since then."

Ismael's trials began in May 2006, when a routine operation to remove a benign tumour from his left shin uncovered a hairline fracture of the tibia.

Bayern held

Bayern Munich were held to a goalless home draw by Duisburg but remained on top of the Bundesliga after closest challengers Werder Bremen suffered a 4-3 defeat to Hannover.

At Allianz Arena, Bayern failed to break the deadlock even though Duisburg's Mohamadou Idrissou was sent off ten minutes from time.

An away win for Bremen over Hannover would have lifted them to the top but they were denied by Mike Hanke's hat-trick.

Markus Rosenberg put the visitors ahead after ten minutes but Hanke leveled the score two minutes later.

Hannover went ahead through an own goal by Frank Bauman in the 20th minute before Hanke extended the gap just one minute later.

A penalty from Brazilian playmaker Diego and a goal from the in-form Rosenberg helped Bremen equalize.

Hanke completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute to lead Hannover to a precious victory.

Bayern are in charge of the league table with 35 points, two ahead of second-placed Bremen.

Hamburg, who were held to a goalless draw by Energie Cottbus, are third on 31 points.

Misfiring Bayern stay top as Bremen stumble

Written by: AFP

Bayern Munich´s Daniel van Buyten(R) duels with Duisburg´s Mohammadou Idrissou during their Bundesliga football match in Munich. Bayern Munich stayed top of the Bundesliga despite being held to a surprise 0-0 home draw by strugglers Duisburg.

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich stayed top of the Bundesliga despite being held to a surprise 0-0 home draw by strugglers Duisburg on Saturday as Werder Bremen were beaten for the first time since September.

Bayern's attack including midfielder Franck Ribery plus strikers Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni - summer signings worth 49 million euros (71.8 million US dollars) - could not break down ten-man Duisburg's defence which has leaked 25 goals already this season.

Even though they had striker Mohammadou Idrissou sent off nine minutes from time, the draw moved Duisburg up to 16th in the league - third from bottom - and means Bayern now have a two-point lead at the top.

"We made life hard for ourselves, we had our chances in the first half and if you score early on, it tends to make things easier later on," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.

"We just didn't have our chances in the second-half, we applied more pressure, but the gaps didn't arrive.

"I wasn't happy at half-time, we were too static and had too little movement, so we missed out on two points."

Ten-man Bremen missed out on a golden chance to take over at the top after losing a seven-goal thriller at Hanover, their first defeat since they were humbled 3-0 by Dortmund in September.

The home side stormed into a 3-1 lead through a double strike from Mike Hanke and an own goal from Bremen defender Frank Baumann before Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg won a penalty for Bremen.

Brazilian midfielder Diego converted to make it 3-2 at the break before Rosenberg netted his second goal to put the guests level, but Hanke showed a little bit of magic as the striker sealed his hat-trick on 77 minutes.

Adding insult in injury time, Bremen had striker Hugo Almeida dismissed in the third minute of injury time as Hanover move up to fifth, while Bremen are second and Hamburg stay third after their 0-0 draw at home with bottom side Energie Cottbus.

"My team tried a little bit too hard and made a few too many errors," said Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf.

"We began very well, but unfortunately did not maintain that and it just wasn't our day."

Defending champions VfB Stuttgart dominated VfL Wolfsburg at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium.

Romania striker Ciprian Marica headed home on 26 minutes before Brazilian striker Cacau stabbed home a cross just two minutes after the half-time break.

And German international midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger added a third on 86 minutes to seal the 3-1 win which keeps them eighth.

Schalke 04 drew 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt as 20-year-old midfielder Faton Toski scored his first Bundesliga goal for Eintracht.

Schalke's Heiko Westermann netted in the 77th minute to put his side level before Greek striker Ioannis Amanatidis, who had a brush with the law in midweek after he was accused of assaulting a woman, scored in the 82nd minute.

But Schalke's blushes were spared when Westermann grabbed his second a minute from time as his side dropped back to seventh in the league.

There was a strange incident late in the game when Schalke substitute Carlos Grossmueller stormed off the bench, still in his tracksuit and bib, to argue with - and eventually push over - Frankfurt's Michael Thurk.

The referee showed the Schalke man an immediate red card.

Slovakian striker Stanislav Sestak was VfL Bochum's hero as he scored twice to seal their 2-2 draw at home to Karlsruhe.

On Friday, Borussia Dortmund registered their first home six-goal win for six years when they crushed hapless Arminia Bielefeld 6-1 to continue their recent resurgence.

A week after beating champions Stuttgart 2-1, Thomas Doll's side were always in control with Croatian striker Mladen Petric finding the net for the eighth time this season as Borussia move up to ninth.

On Sunday, high-fliers Bayer Leverkusen take on Hansa Rostock while Nuremberg host Hertha Berlin.

Bayern held by MSV

FC Bayern stay on top of the Bundesliga despite being held by lowly MSV. The leaders simply didn't find a way through against ten-man Duisburg.

Bayern thus missed out on securing the "half-way title" with a game to spare.

At least goalkeeper Oliver Kahn had reason to celebrate after his 200th clean sheet in the Bundesliga.

MSV celebrated their first point away to Bayern after more than twelve years.

Idrissou sent off

The feat was achieved with ten man after Mohamadou Idrissou was sent off for violent conduct nine minutes from time.

Idrissou had Duisburg's best chance just two minutes into the match when his volley was kept out by Kahn.

Defenders unlucky

Defenders Martin Demichelis (7) and Daniel van Buyten (42)had Bayern's best first-half chances from set-pieces.

Franck Ribery was denied twice by MSV goalkeeper Tom Starke (67, 69) as MSV held on for a precious point.

Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga but failed to capitalise on their rivals’ slip-ups with a disappointing home draw against struggling Duisburg.

The customary 69,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw a slow-paced first half in which second-from-bottom MSV fired off as many shots as the listless league leaders, but the Reds upped the tempo after the break only to find visiting keeper Tom Starke in commanding form.

Cameroon star dismissed

The strugglers were reduced to ten men on 81 minutes after Mohamadou Idrissou collected a red card for aiming a needless kick at Oliver Kahn, but despite a late spell of pressure, it was a day on which the leaders never really looked like scoring.

The result, combined with Bremen’s 4-3 defeat in Hanover, means Bayern stay top of the standings on 35 points from 16 games and extend their lead over Werder to two points, although the Bavarians are not yet certain of the unofficial ‘winter champions’ title with one game remaining in the first half of the campaign.

Start for Sosa

Ottmar Hitzfeld made one change to the line-up from last Sunday’s victory in Bielefeld, handing Jose Ernesto Sosa a first start in place of young Toni Kroos, who himself deputised the previous week for Hamit Altintop before the Turkey international’s midweek operation.

Argentine schemer Sosa created the first decent chance for the home side with a flighted free-kick after just seven minutes, only for Martin Demichelis to steer a free header wide of the MSV goal.

But with World Cup winner Roque Junior a commanding presence at centre-half and prompted by the guile of Romania international Mihai Tararache, the strugglers enjoyed a good spell midway through the half, although Kahn easily dealt with Bulgaria schemer Blagoy Georgiev’s snap shot.

Strong Starke

Starke beat away Mark van Bommel’s fierce drive and Christian Lell thrust purposefully into the box as the Reds reacted, but the best chance of all fell to Lucio stand-in Daniel van Buyten, the Belgian hammering a loose ball over the bar from close range a couple of minutes before the break.

Play was held up for several minutes straight after the restart after an unfortunate injury to MSV centre-half Björn Schlicke, knocked out cold in a collision with Luca Toni, before Van Buyten failed to connect with a glorious Franck Ribery cross to the near post.

No way through

Demichelis had the ball in the net on 55 minutes after Starke brilliantly parried from Toni, but referee Babak Rafati ruled the effort out for offside. The MSV keeper then denied Ribery with a full-length save from a rasping drive, and repeated the feat a couple of minutes later, but Bayern continued to labour against the visiting defence and Hitzfeld sent on Willy Sagnol and Bastian Schweinsteiger for Lell and Ze Roberto.

Lukas Podolski replaced the out-of-sorts Toni for the final 15 minutes but steered a header wide from his first chance, before Idrissou’s foolish kick at Oliver Kahn led to the Cameroon international’s dismissal with nine minutes remaining.

Bayern forced a series of corners in a frantic search for a late winner, but there was no way past Starke and his team-mates and the leaders had to be content with a disappointing draw.
