Bayern 0 Frankfurt 0 | Lead cut as Eintracht frustrate wasteful Reds

Bayern’s lead in the standings is down to two points after the Reds failed to find a way through Frankfurt’s compact and resolute defensive line.

A capacity 69,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena saw returning captain Oliver Kahn reduced to the role of spectator in a first half totally dominated by the Bundesliga leaders, although clear-cut chances came only sporadically against the visitors’ massed defence.

Nikolov seals stalemate

The one-way traffic continued after the restart, but stand-in Eintracht keeper Oka Nikolov was having a blinder and beat away everything the increasingly urgent Bavarians’ could throw at him - and in truth, despite 38 shots at goal to Frankfurt’s five, Bayern lacked the incision and cutting edge to break down their determined opponents on the day.

The result, combined with wins for Hamburg and Bremen, means Bayern remain top of the league on 28 points from 12 matches, but the Reds’ lead is down to four points from Werder in third and just two over second-placed HSV.

Kahn and Ribery return

Ottmar Hitzfeld made no fewer than five changes to the team which beat Monchengladbach in the Cup on Wednesday. Kahn resumed the captaincy and his place in goal after a five-week lay-off, and Franck Ribery also returned from injury.

Christian Lell, Mark van Bommel and Miro Klose were restored to the starting line-up, with Michael Rensing, Marcell Jansen, Andreas Ottl, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski the men to miss out.

Keeper Nikolov in fine form

The Bundesliga leaders came within a whisker of the ideal start when Ze Roberto set up a close-range chance for Toni after just 13 seconds, but veteran keeper Nikolov raced from goal to block.

That set the tone for an utterly one-sided first half, as the home side dominated possession at will against a severely weakened Frankfurt line-up bent only on pulling men back behind the ball and defending in depth.

Macedonia international Nikolov saved well from Van Bommel’s shot on the turn and Toni failed to get power behind his header, but Frankfurt’s Brazilian sweeper Chris had his defence better organised after the midpoint in the half and Bayern created little clear-cut until a brief flurry in the run-in to half-time.

Reds out of luck

Nikolov tipped Toni’s header from Ze’s cross onto the crossbar and Patrick Ochs cleared Lucio’s effort off the line from one of Bayern’s ten or more first half corners, before Greece hitman Ioannis Amanatidis directed a header well wide in Eintracht’s first notable foray upfield – and this with 43 minutes already on the clock.

Van Bommel, Klose and Ribery all came close as Bayern roared out of the dressing room after the restart, but Mexico international Aaron Galindo headed Klose’s goalbound effort away from the danger zone and Lucio’s flicked header on 54 minutes flashed across the face of goal.

No way through

After Van Bommel and Ze both saw shots saved, Hitzfeld chose to shake things up and sent on Schweinsteiger for the tiring Altintop, but the next opening fell to Frankfurt’s Junichi Inamoto, whose shot from a promising position drew a fine block from Lucio.

Nikolov continued to thwart the home strikers with acrobatic saves from Toni and Klose, before Jan Schlaudraff took over from Ribery for the final phase. The Reds’ pressure was relentless and there were scrambles galore in the Eintracht box, but in truth the Reds lacked the creativity needed on the day.

Eintracht Frankfurt:

Referee:

Reaction to Bayern v Eintracht Frankfurt Hitzfeld: We made poor use of our chances

03.11.2007

Following the goalless stalemate against Frankfurt, Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld lamented his side’s failure to take their chances. “We applied a lot of pressure, but today we were a little unlucky too.“

Reaction to Bayern v Eintracht Frankfurt:

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “It’s a shame we didn’t win today. We deserved to win, we had 38 shots to their five. If Toni had scored right at the start, Frankfurt’s defensive tactics would have failed straight away. They defended well, but we certainly deserved to win. Everyone comes here and defends, but we mustn’t be knocked out of our stride by that.“

Ottmar Hitzfeld: “There’ll come a home game once in a while where we don’t score. We were extremely profligate with our chances, we could have been in the lead after just a few seconds. We missed three or four good openings in the first half, but we were too imprecise today. It got more and more difficult as the match went on, because Frankfurt pulled nine men back and didn’t even go looking for a goal. We applied a lot of pressure, but today we were a little unlucky too, although I still thought we’d score if we remained patient. But Frankfurt did very well, and having Nikolov in goal hardly worked against them today.“

Friedhelm Funkel (Frankfurt coach): Obviously I’m happy with a point, because normally we’re not in the same league as Bayern. As everyone knows, we were missing a few key players today. We were extremely good tactically and we deserved the point, although obviously it was all down to defending. You don’t have many options when you’re forced to pick players who haven’t featured for a long time. My players defended to the bets of their abilities today. All that mattered was coming away with a point. Nikolov had a tremendous match, and we rode our luck in certain situations.“

Oka Nikolov (Frankfurt keeper): “We defended with eleven men at times, but that’s hardly surprising given Bayern’s class. We got lucky too, but the only thing that counts is that we’ve earned a point.“

Effort unrewarded | Hitzfeld: We gave it everything we had

At half-time in Saturday’s match, Allianz Arena announcer Stefan Lehmann directed the attention of the 69,000 crowd to the VIP box and the figure of Gerd Müller, who smiled benignly as applause rang out to celebrate his 62nd birthday. “And warm up too Gerd, in case it’s still 0-0 after 75 minutes,” Lehmann jokingly told the man “who scored about 8 million times for Bayern.“

However, even “Der Bomber“ would have been pushed to do any better than his successors on this particular afternoon. “We made plenty of chances and we deserved to win, but it was one of those days when the ball just won’t go in,” chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented after an ultimately disappointing goalless draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.

One-sided stats

Rarely have the match stats been so heavily weighted in one side’s favour. Bayern delivered 38 shots to their opponents’ five, took the corner count 16-2, won 59 percent of their tackles, and registered 63 percent of the possession, a figure which after 20 minutes of play was an almost unbelievable 80 percent. “That basically says it all,” Ottmar Hitzfeld mused the following day. “We gave it everything we had, but it wasn’t to be.“

“You gt games like that once or twice a season. You can keep on shooting until you’re blue in the face,” Mark van Bommel reflected. The Dutch midfielder shot eight times at the Frankfurt goal, but either narrowly missed the target or was foiled by outstanding Eintracht keeper Oka Nikolov, who saved a total of 15 shots. “We warmed his gloves fairly regularly,” Hitzfeld ironically noted.

Best chance falls to Toni

Veteran shot-stopper Nikolov, a last-minute stand-in for sick number one Markus Pröll, made arguably his most important save after just 13 seconds (picture). A Zé Roberto cross found Luca Toni unmarked just yards from goal, but the man who has already opened the scoring eight times this season failed to net this time. “If Toni had scored right at the start, Frankfurt’s defensive tactics would have failed straight away,” Rummenigge reflected.

The weakened Frankfurt side came to the Allianz Arena with no greater ambition than defending their way to a point. By the time the match entered the closing phase, the visitors simply parked all ten of their outfield players around their own box. “You normally wouldn’t get away with that,” declared Hamit Altintop, “not every visiting team will have as much luck as they did.“ However, Eintracht will not be the last team to come to Munich with n ultra-defensive attitude.

Shortage of goals

On the plus side, Bayern created chances at the rate of almost one a minute. “We had four or five gilt-edged chances, and that normally gets you at least one goal,” Hitzfeld observed, nevertheless pleased with his team’s “outstanding display“ and reserving his criticism for their wastefulness in front of goal. “In my experience, the important thing is that you’re creating chances,” Rummenigge agreed. “With the quality we have up front, I’m sure we’ll start scoring again soon.“

Bayern have now gone three league matches without a goal from a striker, and also drew their previous outing 0-0 in Dortmund a week ago, but neither those facts nor the approach of Hamburg to within two points of the leaders has disturbed the peace at the club for now. “We’re not concerned, because we played well today,“ Rummenigge summarized. Gerd Müller was doubtless thinking the same thing.

Eintracht Frankfurt v Stuttgart

Quote:
The international break came at the wrong time for Stuttgart. Following their terrific 3-1 win over Bayern Munich, Armin Veh would have liked to have had the chance to continue that momentum.

Their performance against Bayern showed glimpses of their Championship winning form and a similar performance against Eintracht should see all talk of a crisis finally laid to rest.

Their revival however will be seriously tested against Frankfurt at the Commerzbank Arena, although the Adler are one point and one place behind the Swabians in 10th.

However, since the last round of matches, Frankfurt have been rocked by the news that influential midfielder Albert Streit has agreed to join Schalke next season. Frankfurt officials have moved quickly this week to deny rumours that the proposed switch could even take place in the January transfer window, insisting Streit will remain for the rest of this season.
