Müller signs new deal

Schalke 04 General Manager Andreas Müller has put pen to paper on a new contract until 30 June 2011.

Andreas Müller has put pen to paper on a new contract after the club's supervisory board unanimously agreed on Monday to extend the general manager's current contract, which was due to run until 30 September 2008, for a further three years until 30 June 2011.

"The team has a great future"

"We're very happy not only with the job Andreas Müller is doing, but also with his professional and competent manner. The team has developed very well and because of its structure has a great future", said supervisory board chairman Clemens Tönnies in praise of Müller.

"The route he has taken of putting faith in highly promising young players on free or inexpensive transfers is exactly the right one. We have a team people can identify with, not least because it contains highly talented players from our own youth scheme."

Müller said the decision to sign a new contract had not been a difficult one to make. "As a general manager of a football club you won't find better conditions anywhere else. We have a great working relationship here with genuine teamwork on all levels. I sense that together we still have lots we can achieve and I'm looking forward to being able to help shape the future of this unique club."

UEFA Cup winner

Müller, 44, joined Schalke from Hannover 96 in 1988. The Stuttgart-born midfielder played for the club for twelve years, making 200 Bundesliga appearances and scoring 17 goals (total: 338/32). In 1997 Müller was one of the "Eurofighters" who caused a sensation when they won the UEFA Cup.

After ending his career he was appointed team manager in 2000 and joined the managing board in 2001. In 2006 he assumed sole responsibility for the club's sporting affairs in the role of general manager.

The "battle pig" returns

90 minutes full of running and tackling, always giving everything, never giving up and always pushing the team on - that's the way Jermaine Jones plays football.

The 25-year-old is a working bee, and he has now been united with like-minded people on the terraces.

So it's not surprising at all that the former Eintracht Frankfurt player is already a crowd favourite at Schalke. And now it's time to return to the Commerzbank Arena - if only for 90 minutes on Saturday.

"Of course it's a special game for me. I'm looking forward to it", Jones said and admitted "I always look out for Eintracht's result after a match."

"They love players like him"

He has just played 13 Bundesliga matches for S04, but he is already in the fans' good books.

"Here they love players like him. He impersonates everything the fans want to see. Passion, effort and an insatiable will to win", sporting director Andreas Müller explains and adds: "Jermaine is 100 per cent right here."

Hotly debated

Some people didn't think so in the summer. Signing the former striker, who was changed into a midfielder by Eintracht coach Friedhelm Funkel, was hotly debated.

Jones was said to be injury-prone and also had a "bad boy" image from his time with Eintracht (2000 - 04 and 2005 - 07) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2004/05). But his strong performances for Schalke have silenced the critics.

A real boost

If in defence, as a holding midfielder or when he makes his way into the opponent's penalty area - Jermaine Jones has already proved that he can be a real boost for a top team.

Against Hertha BSC his run won the penalty that proved decisive in Schalke's 1-0 win, and he followed up with the important opening goal in Schalke's 2-0 away win over Rosenborg in the Champions League.

Jones - the new Wilmots?

Jones even reminds the Schalke fans of a former hero: Marc Wilmots. "I've already heard people say that we have a new battle pig", Müller reports and smirks.

Wilmots once was labelled "battle pig" because of his robust and intensive way of going into one-on-one duels, and he was the driving force when Schalke won their first and only European title: the UEFA Cup in 1997. Wilmots became a crowd favourite in no time at all back then.

Jones still has some way to go before he has equalled Wilmots' achievements. His first goal is a much smaller one anyway: to prove those wrong that had deemed him a bad signing. The son of a US soldier wants to "run until the ref blows the final whistle and I collapse into bed."

A German international in the making?

His potential could even see Jones make it to the international level - at least that's what his former coach Friedhelm Funkel thinks he is capable of.

"I rarely say such a thing, but Jones is definitely the best German midfielder", Funkel told the "Frankfurter Rundschau" and added: "He will be in Germany's starting eleven during the Euro 2008 - if he keeps fit."

National team coach Joachim Löw had already called up Jones, but an injury denied the midfielder his first cap. But if he continues to perform like he does, the next call should be just around the corner.

Westermann saves Schalke

Heiko Westermann scored twice to secure a point for Schalke at Eintracht Frankfurt. The hosts had taken the lead twice.

The Schalke defender scored twice in the final 15 minutes (77, 89) to deny Eintracht their first win since October 7.

Frankfurt coach Friedhelm Funkel's wait for his 100th Bundesliga win goes on, the hosts haven't won for seven matches.

Talent Faton Toski (49) and Ioannis Amanatidis (82) had given Eintracht the lead twice.

Disappointing Schalke

Schalke were disappointing throughout. Jermaine Jones was unable to dictate the match in midfield on his return to his former club.

Still the "Royal Blues" had a great chance to take the lead after 17 minutes, but Halil Altintop and Kevin Kuranyi both were denied.

Toski opener

Eintracht had chances when Marco Russ (22), Amanatidis (31) and Michael Fink (44) tried their luck from distance.

20-year-old Toski scored his first Bundesliga goal in his third match, created by Amanatidis to start off a turbulent second half.

Grossmüller sent off

Westermann then scored with a header and a left-footed shot either side of Amanatidis' goal to secure a point for Schalke.

But Schalke also had Carlos Grossmüller, an unused substitute, sent off for violent conduct four minutes from time.

Duisburg will overwinter at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. Eintracht Frankfurt ended their winless seven-match run.

Former MSV coach Friedhelm Funkel (between 1996 and 2000) played Amanatidis as a lone striker.

And the Greek made sure that Funkel was able to celebrate his 100th win as a Bundesliga coach in 2007.

Duisburg's midfield with Ivica Grlic, Youssef Mokhtari and Blagoy Georgijew rarely managed to set up strikers Ailton and Manasseh Ishiaku.

Benjamin Kohler (18) missed a good chance for Eintracht on the counter-attack, but Amanatidis (40) beat MSV keeper Tom Starke from Faton Toski's through-ball.

Eintracht were content with defending after the break, and successfully so as MSV failed to create any meaningful opportunities.
