Hamburg Win Race To Sign Cristantus

Cristantus Bundesliga side Hamburg have beaten some big-hitting competitors o the punch by signing Nigerian star Macauley Chrisantus.

In a major coup for the Bundesliga, German side Hamburg have captured the highy coveted 17-year-old, Macauley Chrisantus, who had looked set to join one of the Premier League clubs that were interested in him - Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Ajax, Internazionale and Milan were also said to be monitoring the young striker, who won the Golden Boot at the World Under-17 Championship earlier this year when scoring seven goals in seven games as Nigeria won the junior world crown for the third time.

However, Hamburg have agreed a deal to take Chrisantus from Abuja FC.

“We are delighted that we were able to convince him of our concept,” HSV sport director Dietmar Beiersdorfer told the club’s official website.

Chrisantus has agreed an initial amateur contract with Hamburg, and will sign a full professional deal when he turns 18 next August.

"We are very pleased to have his services," said Hamburg's sports director Dietmar Beiersdorfer after Chrisantus trained with the senior squad on Tuesday morning.

Netherlands: Three Excused For Minsk Trip

With qualification for the European Championship finals secure since Saturday night the Dutch don’t really need all of their guns blazing in the Belarus game – and so three of their stars will not travel to Minsk at all.

As it was revealed before even the Luxembourg game, Ed Van Der Sar had already agreed with Marco Van Basten not to go along in case the Oranje had already qualified. The 1-0 victory over the group G bottom side did the business for the Dutch and the 37-year-old keeper returned to Manchester to rejoin his United teammates.

He is not the only one leaving, though. Ruud Van Nistelrooy suffered a slight hamstring injury and was therefore substituted.

“It’s something that had troubled me all week long and at half-time I decided that I couldn’t go on. I don’t want to risk a lengthy injury and therefore I’m not going to Minsk.” the Real Madrid striker said before flying back to Spain, while Clarence Seedorf has also been allowed to return to Milan, the KNVB announced on Sunday.

Feyenoord goalkeeper Henk Timmer, Hamburger SV defensive midfielder Nigel De Jong, as well as Hedwiges Maduro and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, both of Ajax, will all join the 19-man squad on Monday and travel along to the Belarus. Huntelaar will likely get his chance to play from the start, with Maarten Stekelenburg filling Van Der Sar’s boots in goal.

Almiron Has Bundesliga Admirers

A pair of Bundesliga clubs are reported to have developed a keen interest in unsettled Juventus midfielder Sergio Bernardo Almiron.

Hamburger SV and VfL Wolfsburg have been identified as potential suitors by the German press, though neither club has officially confirmed an interest in Almiron.

The 27-year-old has been largely a peripheral figure since his €9m move from Empoli in the summer and at the moment is firmly behind Cristiano Zanetti and Antonio Nocerino in the central midfield pecking order.

Barring a dramatic improvement in his form or a midfield injury crisis, Juventus are reported to be willing to let Almiron leave on loan once the transfer window reopens in January with the view of making his departure permanent.

The Bundesliga sides would likely have to beat off stiff competition should Almiron indeed be available for transfer come January, with London clubs West Ham and Tottenham also known to be admirers of the stylish midfielder.

Almiron, who has never played for his country, is the son of Sergio Almiron Sr, a former international striker who won the World Cup in 1986 wearing the number one shirt.

Huub Stevens will part ways with Hamburger SV in the summer to join Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Club and coach revealed the departure to the press at the HSH Nordbank Arena on Monday.

Private reasons

"The decision has been made solely on private reasons. The move allows me to be with my family, especially with my wife", Stevens explained.

HSV chairman Bernd Hoffmann regrets the decision. "We did everything to keep Huub Stevens at the club. But we completely sympathize with his decision for his family."

Zidan's coach at HSV Huub Stevens decided not to renew his contract and according to Dutch sourcesm, he agreed to be the new coach of PSV at the end of the current season.

Huub Stevens will be PSV's new coach at end of this season
Huub Stevens will not be Hamburger SV coach next season as the Dutch manager will return to his home country to coach PSV Eindhoven after the end of the current season.
The change will likely affect Zidan as the Egyptian doesn't fit well in the current HSV formation which relies on a lone striker in a 4-3-3 formation.
The departure of Stevens and the possible signing of Van der Vaart to Valencia or another Spanish side could offer Zizou a better chance of first team football and the possibility to play as a 2nd striker instead of playing out of his position as he used to do in the current season so far.

It should be noted that HSV are currently challenging for the Bundesliga title with Stevens at helm and the current formation is helping the club in both the UEFA cup and the Bundesliga. However, Zidan still can't find his top form which made him score 13 goals in 15 matches for Mainz.

Hamburg v Hansa Rostock
Quote:
Hamburg complete the weekend’s round of matches at home to Hansa Rostock in what will be a strange atmosphere at HSH Nordbank Arena.

The midweek news that trainer Huub Stevens will be leaving at the season’s end, came as a shock to many in Hamburg. Having turned the club’s fortunes around last season and taken the Hanseaten to within a point of Bayern Munich, he will be a hard man to replace.

Thoughts of next season however will have to wait, as important points are up for grabs on Sunday.

Felix Magath makes his return to the Allianz Arena with his Wolfsburg side 10 months after his sacking. Anything less than a win for Ottmar Hitzfeld's side could see either Werder Bremen or Hamburg topping the table come Sunday night.

Mohamed Zidan will return to action after the international break today (Sunday) as HSV face Hansa Rostock. The Egyptian is expected to play as a left winger while Olic will play the role of the central forward in absence of the Peruvian forward Guerrero.

HSV follow suit

Hamburger SV have kept up with leaders FC Bayern and Werder Bremen, thanks to a confident home win over FC Hansa Rostock.

HSV won 2-0 and cemented their third place in the Bundesliga standings.

The "Red Shorts" are just one point behind Bayern and level on points with Werder, who they face next.

13 matches unbeaten

Rafael van der Vaart (19) and Ivica Olic (61) ensured that the hosts extended their unbeaten run to 13 competitive matches.

It was a deserved win ahead of 57,000 fans in the sold out HSH Nordbank Arena and HSV's fifth home win this season, Hansa suffered their sixth away defeat and stay in 15th place.

After 19 minutes captain van der Vaart found the far corner with a low shot from twelve metres after compatriot Romeo Castelen had set him up.

Olic header

Hansa barely had any goalscoring opportunities, but van der Vaart (29), Trochowksi (31), Castelen (32) and Olic (42) all missed further chances to double HSV's lead.

But Olic improved after the break when his flick-on header from Trochowski's cross found the back of the net, and from then on the match was over as a contest.

Zidan scored for Hamburg

Egyptian forward Mohamed Zidan converted a penalty to help Hamburg crush French side Rennes 3-0 at home in the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

Hamburg skipper Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Eric Choupo-Moting doubled the lead eight minutes from time.

Zidan, who started the game on the bench, replaced Dutch playmaker Van der Vaart three minutes later and soon made an impact.

He earned a penalty in stoppage time and notched it home to put the icing on the cake.

The victory put Hamburg on top of Group D with six points, two ahead of Basel and Brann Bergen, who come second and third respectively.

"Jürgen" has a score to settle with HSV

Werder Bremen entertain Hamburger SV in Saturday's top clash, and bundesliga.de focuses its attention on Werder striker Boubacar Sanogo.

It's always a massive occasion when Werder Bremen take on north German rivals Hamburger SV. This time though, the stakes have been raised. First place in the standings is up for grabs, and an intense 90 minutes is expected.

"I'm happy with Werder!"

It'll be a special match for Boubacar Sanogo. The striker joined Bremen from HSV at the start of the season, but the goal-getter isn't getting nostalgic about his past.

"I don't want to talk about Hamburg anymore; it wasn't a good time for me. I just don't want to talk about it. I'm happy with Werder and I'm grateful for the chance to be able to play for such a big club!

Ups and downs with HSV

Sanogo experienced the ups and downs of football while with Hamburg. After a whirlwind start, the forward found the going tough. With HSV in the doldrums last season, Sanogo too felt the brunt of a campaign gone badly wrong. But looking back on it now, Sanogo believes it was a learning experience.

"Football is just like life: sometimes things are looking up, and sometimes they're not. What you think about is most important; self-confidence is crucial. I was so glad when I got the chance to play for Bremen. It's a good team that plays good football, and that has helped me to show my qualities", the striker believes.

Stevens: "A very tough decision"

Over in Hamburg, things are not as settled as you would expect for a team riding high in the standings. Coach Huub Stevens has announced he'll be stepping down and returning to Holland at the end of the season. His move to PSV Eindhoven has overshadowed the big match!

"It was a very tough decision to make. I'm not sure I'll have as much fun working there as I have here with Hamburger SV", Stevens admits.

"It was a shock"

Stevens will look after his sick wife. His decision is an understandable one, and that demands respect from the club, players and fans alike.

"It was a shock to us, but you have to accept and respect that. It's the way it is", Collin Benjamin declared.

Klinsmann for inspiration

When HSV come to town, Boubacar Sanogo gets the chance to settle a score with the team that let him go. The Bremen star is leaving nothing to chance: his training and even his haircut must be optimal. Additionally, he's drawing on role-model Jürgen Klinsmann for inspiration.

"Sometimes I think I will leap like Klinsmann did. I've even tried to run like him, but it didn't work", reveals Sanogo. "I wear the number 18 jersey, just like Klinsmann. I've always said that if I ever make it as a professional, I must play with this number.

Sanogo's reverence of Germany's iconic striker is well known at Werder. They've given him the nickname "Jürgen.

Bremen triumph in Derby

Werder Bremen have assumed the top position in the table for at least one day.

Three days after their 3-2 triumph in the Champions League against Real Madrid, Thomas Schaaf's squad defeated Hamburger SV 2-1 (1-0) and moved ahead of Bayern Munchen, who play Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday.

Hamburg run out of gas

Ex-Hamburg player Boubacar Sanogo put Bremen ahead in the 15th minute after a nice set up by Jurica Vranjes. HSV captain Rafael van der Vaart equalised in the 61st minute with his ninth score of the season, this time by exploiting a mistake by Werder back-up goalie Christian Vander. Petri Pasanen scored the final point only three minutes later.

Despite missing five starters, Bremen were still able to play strong for stretches of the game. HSV were respectable but the exhaustion of the squad was evident throughout the match.
