Van der Vaart draws level with Seeler

A goal from Rafael van der Vaart put Hamburg up among the Bundesliga leaders and equalled a long-held club record set by HSV legend Uwe Seeler.

Van der Vaart's all-important strike in the 49th minute gave Hamburg thre points away to Arminia Bielefeld. It was also the seventh Bundesliga game in a row in which he had found the net.

The last HSV player to achieve that was Uwe Seeler, way back in the first-ever Bundesliga season, 1963-64.

Just like "Our Uwe"

On matchday 9, Rafael van der Vaart equalled a long-standing club record at Hamburger SV, putting him on a level footing with the legendary Uwe Seeler.

The 24-year-old Dutch international's winner in the 1-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld was the seventh consecutive Bundesliga game in which he had scored - a feat previously only achieved at the club by "Our Uwe" in the very first Bundesliga season, back in 1963-64.

"It's a great honour to have done something only accomplished before by such a great player", the HSV captain said after the game.

"His round"

There were congratulations from head coach and fellow Dutchman Huub Stevens, along with best wishes for the upcoming internationals.

Asked the significance of van der Vaart's record-equalling feat, Stevens replied with a grin, "It's his round", adding, "I'll have no objections of course if he keeps banging them in."

Well ahead of schedule

One more goal will see "Rafa" equal his own total from last season.

In 2006-07, he had not netted once at the end of matchday 9. The first of his eight Bundesliga strikes for the season only came on matchday 14.

In other statistical departments, van der Vaart is also well up on his form at the same stage last season. His shooting accuracy is up from 53 percent after 9 games last year to 64 percent, his successful dribbles from 13 to 47 percent, and he has won 50 percent of all tackles as opposed to 42 percent last time around.

Stevens Proud Of Hamburg

Hamburg trainer Huub Stevens was a proud man after overseeing his side beat Litex Lovech 3-1 at home to progress to the group stages of the Uefa Cup.

Despite going a goal behind, goals from Paulo Guerrero and captain Rafael van der Vaart saw the Hanseaten through.

“We were bottom of the Bundesliga last season with 15 points from 20 games, and now we find ourselves in the group phase of the Uefa Cup. We can all be very proud of HSV” the trainer explained.

“I said after the away leg that it was only half time. You could see that tonight against a very organised team in Lovech.

“We had to be patient, play at a higher tempo than our opponents, and use the space available to us” he continued.

Arminia Bielefeld 0 - 1 Hamburger SV

A goal from Rafael van der Vaart put Hamburg up among the Bundesliga leaders and equalled a long-held club record set by HSV legend Uwe Seeler.

Van der Vaart's all-important strike in the 49th minute gave Hamburg thre points away to Arminia Bielefeld. It was also the seventh Bundesliga game in a row in which he had found the net.

The last HSV player to achieve that was Uwe Seeler, way back in the first-ever Bundesliga season, 1963-64.

Fourth defeat in a row

The result puts Hamburg on a four-game unbeaten streak and moves them at least temporarily to within three points of league leaders Bayern München, who host 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday.

Arminia, meanwhile, continue in freefall after their promising start to the season. They have now lost four on the trot, scoring one goal and conceding 14 in the process, and are moving ever closer to the drop zone.

Changed line-up

Coach Ernst Middendorp made four changes to the side thrashed 8-1 at Bremen last week, as well as switching from a 4-2-2-2 system to 4-1-1-4.

The tactic intially seemed to be paying off, with the hosts looking compact early on and creating the first real scoring opportunities through Sibusiso Zuma (11.) and Jörg Böhme (13.). HSV, "fresh" from Thursday's UEFA Cup win over Litex Lovech, started cautiously and only came close to goal for the first time in the 36th minute.

Hain with no chance

Van der Vaart himself looked to be having a quiet game - up until the point, four minutes after the break, when he took a long pass from Jerome Boateng and rifled the ball in at the far post, past a helpless Matthias Hain in the Bielefeld goal.

Arminia battled valiantly for an equaliser after that, but found no way through a solid HSV defence.

Mohamed Zidan's teammate striker Guerrero has been withdrawn from Peru squad for the matches versus Paraguay and Chile because of an injury. The extent of injury is not yet known but the player maynot be able to feature versus Stuttgart After the end of the international break.

Peruvian striker Guerrero has been on a lethal form since the start of this season and this resulted in Egyptian striker Zidan losing his starting spot for the 23 year old Peruvian international.

Zidan started as regular for HSV but he couldn't score in the few opening games of the season and after a 2-1 away loss against Bochum, the coach Huub Stevens decided to make changes in attack and he introduced Guerrero as a lone striker instead of Zidan.

The Peruvian managed to prove himself and established himself as a first team regular and Zizou has been struggling lately to see first team action.

HSV's club website reported a few hours ago that the Peruvian international suffered a groin injury and accordingly, he was withdrawn from the Peru squad which will face Paraguay and Chile on the 13th and 17th of October respectively.

The extent of Guerrero' injury is not confirmed yet and it is unknown if he will be able to feature versus Stuttgart after the end of the international break or not.

On the other hand, Egyptian striker Zidan is one of two of the Egyptians abroad who were called to the Egyptian team who will face Botswana on the 13th of October.

i worship this guy i hope he gets a chnce to prove himself to all the coaches around the world but the problem is that he doesnt play as freely with hamburg as he did with mainz ...

yep winston van der vaart cant get any better at the moment i hope he doesnt consider leaving again ...

on another topic

Mohamed Zidan has been given the title Best Arab Footballer in Europe by a top magazine, which named its top ten. Ahmed Hassan was also awarded 3rd place and Mido 7th. Moreover, Zizou spoke to the magazine in his usual honesty.

NOX Magazine, the top English language men's magazine in the Arab world, looked at the top ten Arab players currently in Europe ahead of the season that has just begun.

Its awards were as follows:

10 Mohamed El Yaagoubi "Moha" - Morocco
9 Hatem Trabelsi - Tunisia
8 Karim Haggui - Tunisia
7 AHMED HOSSAM "MIDO" - EGYPT
6 Radhi Jaidi - Tunisia
5 Nadir Belhadj - Algeria
4 Marouane Chamakh - Morocco
3 AHMED HASSAN - EGYPT
2 Mbark Bossoufa - Morocco
1 MOHAMED ZIDAN - EGYPT

Mido, it said, is still young but must concentrate and mature if he is to match his potential. The writer listed what he called "Mido Madness": a history of the player's more infamous events so far in his career.

Ahmed Hassan was praised for his ten years in Europe and the serious effect he has on every team he plays for, including the Egyptian national side.

The magazine also conducted a huge interview with Zidan, in which he spoke about his past as well as his ambitions for the future.

An extract of the interview is below:

Moreover, he is confident whenever "Zidan" is mentioned in football conversations the question "Which one?" will soon follow. "His name put pressure on me," he says, taking a break from his summer training camp with his new colleagues. "But I don't like to copy anyone. I like to be myself.
I just have him as a role-model because he's the best player I've seen in front of me and his life is full of success. But I too am now famous as 'Zidan' in Europe."

The summer move, which should put more money in his pocket than any Egyptian footballer other than Mido, will give him the platform to prove it. Signing for Hamburg represents the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. "I've loved football since I was really little," he says. "From the age of four or five I used to always play football in the street under our house."

His journey to Europe began when his mother had agreed to take him, then 17, with her to Denmark on a business trip to buy car parts for the family business. "I travelled with a tourist visa to Denmark," Zidan recalls, enabling him to stay for three months. "I went there just hoping to get a chance to play football."

Second Division team B93 took him on without pay, but he needed a professional contract if he was to stay in the country. Staff at First Division club AB Copenhagen were immediately convinced by his abilities. Zidan had negotiated his first hurdle.

Zidan's time at AB demonstrated his potential. At the end of the 2002/03 season, when he was just 21, he was awarded the league's Technical Player of the Year.

He signed for FC Midtjylland for $600,000. But as his fame increased, so did his infamy: Zidan was charged by police for violent conduct against his ex-girlfriend. In 2004, he was spotted on television wearing a stolen watch worth over $25,000, when in fact he had bought it off the streets of
Copenhagen for nearer $500. Speeding convictions also got him walking in and out of court. "These are things that happen," he says, unconcerned. "Am I the first person to have an argument with a lady? Why shouldn't I buy a watch I like it and have money to buy it?"

To him, the press hype didn't threaten his success, it was merely evidence of it. "It's proof that I'm famous," says Zidan, whose face was still front-page material in Denmark for his football.

The full eight-page interview, as well as the 'Top 10 Footballers in Europe' award, is available in August's NOX Magazine and can be ordered from Nox-Mag.com...

i would certainly vote for him as best arab in europe ....

and look at the table three egyptians 7th , 3rd and 1st midos condition last season was awful but hes making up for that this one ..

hope we get 1st 2nd and 3rd next year
