Hoeneß speaks his mind

In reality, Hertha BSC manager Dieter Hoeneß wanted to keep more distance between himself and the players this season.

But the worries and recent woes meant that he could no longer remain seated in his office. He simply had to speak his mind to the players.

20 minutes speech

Hoeneß, accompanied by his assistants Michael Preetz and Jochen Sauer, strode over the Hertha complex for a meeting inside the changing rooms at the training complex.

Hoeneß talked for 20 minutes, not loud as had been the case in the past, but straight to the point: "You must all pull yourselves together and battle hard during the final two games of the year against Nürnberg and Bayern," the manager told the players.

"The time had come"

After only taking 19 points from 15 games, and of course the disappointing 0-3 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, Hoeneß felt it was time for some straight talking.

The manager again: "The time had come for me to say some choice words."

Interview with Nürnberg's Andreas Wolf

On Sunday (07.12.2007, 5 pm) Hertha take to the pitch inside the easyCredit-Stadion in Nürnberg for a round 16 Bundesliga game against the former capital city club interim coach Hans Meyer and his DFB Cup holders Nürnberg. herthabsc.de spoke to their defender Andreas Wolf ahead of the game, about the current situation at the club and of course Sunday's clash against Hertha...

herthabsc.de: After your victory over Dortmund and a good performance in the UEFA Cup, it seems that Nürnberg have stabilised the ship so to speak. Was the game in Duisburg (0-1) a case of repeating bad habits or just a hiccup?

Andreas Wolf: Neither of the two, condidering the situation we find ourselves in at the moment. We have experienced many games like the one in Duisburg this season. It is a difficult situation, but moaning doesn't help, we just have to carry on working hard on our game. We proved that out character and attitude is intact by coming from behind to beat Alkmaar on Wednesday night. But enough talking has been done now.

After enjoying a superb 2006/07 season. Nürnberg have struggled this term. Did you expect it to happen?

Wolf: No, not in the way that it happened, but we are not the only Bundesliga club to experience such things; just look at HSV. So why should a club with much less resources and possibilities like us be an exception to the rule. We knew from the start that we were not going to repeat our feats of last season, as we punched above our weight and had some of the luck which has deserted us this season.

Your side were a force at home last season, that has all changed. Why can't you do the business in your own stadium?

Wolf: Our home strength was the basis for our sussess last season. This season we are chasing lost points at home. We have recently improved somewhat, with victories over Dortmund, Frankfurt and Alkmaar. Our tremendous home support helps us a lot. It is amazing how our fans stay behind us even when things are not going as well as we would like.

Hertha are the visitors to Nürnberg on Sunday. They are also struggling. What kind of game are you expecting?

Wolf: I hope that we will keep all three points in Nürnberg. We will have to be patient, but was desperately want a home win.

How do you rate Hertha? Hans Meyer knows the team well. Has he been giving you all tips about them?

Wolf: Hertha are struggling to fulfil the expectations of being a capital city club, but we would love to have their kind of problems. They know that should they win their final two games before the winter break, they will be on the verge of the UEFA Cup places in the Bundesliga table, and they will be keen to underline that fact on Sunday.

Will you give us a tip?

Wolf: No I don't tip games, but I want to win …

Angelos Charisteas opened the scoring after five minutes, Zvjezdan Misimovic (39) added a second. Fabian Lustenberger (65) replied for the disappointing Berliners.

Nuremberg linked to their good performance in the UEFA Cup in midweek, outplayed Hertha right from the start and could have scored more goals.

Greek international Charisteas scored into the far corner with his right foot after a good ball from Dominik Reinhardt.

Misimovic then found the back of the net with a volley from Nicky Adler's right-wing cross.

Hertha coach Lucien Favre made two substitutions at half-time, but Nuremberg still were the better team.

Lustenberger pulled one back for Hertha after a goalmouth scramble, but FCN held on.

FC Bayern have secured the "half-way championship" with a draw at Hertha, but the Berliners made life tough for FCB.

The German record champions were held to a goalless draw in Berlin, but the better goal difference keeps them above Werder Bremen.

Bayern are on top since round 1 and have secured the 16th "half-way title" in the club's history.

Still FCB have won only two out of their last eight matches, and they need at least a draw against Aris Saloniki in the UEFA Cup on Wednesday to end the year on a high.

Michael Rening kept goal for suspended Oliver Kahn in front of 74,220 fans, and Bayern's starting line-up also included Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Bayern shaded the first half, but Miroslav Klose (10), Daniel van Buyten (16) and Podolski (38) failed to capitalise.
