In the end, they were a hair's-breadth away from losing their hard-earned point in the capital, Hertha striker Marko Pantelic seeing his 90th-minute penalty crash against the bar. The home side's poor recent form continued (two defeats in their last two games), and their aim of a place in Europe next season will require a radical return to form. Edgy opening More than 48,000 fans in the Olympic Stadium watched a game unfold between two teams clearly lacking in self-confidence at the moment. Hertha's first noteworthy attempt on the opposing goal came in the 42nd minute, Pantelic seeing his effort from the edge of the box saved by Energie keeper Tomislav Piplica. Highlights few and far between From the start, the visitors looked the livelier of the two sides, but were unable to translate their dominance of midfield into scoring opportunities. A cautious first-half littered with stray passes on both sides was greeted by a chorus of whistles from the fans at the break. Both teams pepped up somewhat in the second half. Pantelic, put in by Gilberto, was once again foiled by Piplica in the 51st minute. The game was marked by a preponderance of fouls as the pace quickened, culminating in the last-minute penalty for Hertha. But here, too, the fans were destined to be denied their goal. |

The Hertha midfielder appeared to catch Rost in the face with his elbow when the two side's met on Saturday, leaving the Cottbus man needing three stitches to a lip wound. The incident was not seen by the referee, but similar events have previously been investigated retrospectively by the DFB and Rost has also asked them to intervene this time. "Okoronkwo has often been seen to do such fouls," he told a Berlin television channel. It was a moment in time that Hertha fans won't forget in a hurry, because it was painful just watching. During Hertha's 0-1 Bundesliga defeat away to Schalke, midfielder Lucio went into a challenge with Schalke's Lövenkrands and came off worse. The Brazilian laid on the pitch in enormous pain, and the rest as they say, is history. The soul-shattering diagnosis: Cruciate ligament damage and at least a six month break from football: "Of course the diagnosis was a huge shock for everyone", said the Hertha team physician Uli Schleicher at the time. Slow recovery A day after sustaining the injury, Lucio was flown by plane and helicopter to a clinic in Schruns in Austria. There he was operated on by Dr. Christian Schenk, who specialises in ski accident patients. Two days later Lucio said: "I am happy with the support being given to me and I am grateful to Hertha for the treatment being given to me." Return flight to Berlin Now the 28 year old midfielder has returned to Berlin, where he was met at the airport by sporting director Dieter Hoeneß, who welcomed him with a huge bouquet of flowers, before wishing him a speedy recovery: "We believe in you", Hoeneß told his player. __________________ |
