His decider against Hansa Rostock came in the 89th minute. Prior to that, Wolfsburg's best opportunity had fallen to playmaker Marcelinho, who saw his 40th-minute penalty saved by Hansa keeper Stefan Wächter. Wolfsburg in control from the start Wolfsburg dominated possession from the off, but were unable to make much headway up front and for the first half-hour there was little to excite the crowd of 26,127 at either end. The first clear chance fell to the visitors, however, on the 30-minute mark. Christian Rahn's ball found Sebastian Hähnge free in front of goal and the striker should have done better from close-range than fire straight at Wolfsburg keeper Simon Jentzsch. Wächter saves penalty That seemed to galvanise the home side and from then on they upped the pressure on the visiting defence. In the 33rd minute, Grafite broke down the left but played the ball in behind the supporting Marcelinho. Soon after that, Wächter blocked a header from Marcel Schäfer following a Marcelinho corner. But the Hansa keeper's party piece was yet to come. Five minutes before half-time, he pushed Marcelinho's spot-kick over the bar. Rough justice, perhaps, as the award had been a soft one - given against Orestes for a seemingly accidental handball after he had been pushed. Rostock solid at the back Wolfsburg continued to dominate play after the break, but, as before, were unable to unduly trouble a solid Rotcok defence. For their part, the guests restricted themselves to the occasional harmless counter-attack, a tactic which seemed to have earned them a point until Dzeko struck at the death to send them home empty-handed. |
