Hansa Rostock 2-1 VfB Stuttgart

Quote:
Hansa Rostock 2-1 VfB Stuttgart

ROSTOCK, September 29 (Bundesliga) - Hansa Rostock maintained their impressive recent form with a home victory over Bundesliga champions Stuttgart.

Two goals in two first-half minutes from Tobias Rathgeb and Alves Orestes proved decisive for the top-flight new boys, who have nave now won three consecutive games.

Mario Gomez pulled a goal back with 17 minutes remaining but it proved to be no more than a consolation for Armin Veh's side, who have already lost four games this term.

Clearly full of confidence following back-to-back victories against MSV Duisburg and Hertha Berlin, the home side started positively and took the lead in spectacular fashion 16 minutes in.

Midfielder Rathgeb lined up a free-kick from 25 yards out and let fly with an unstoppable strike which flew into the top-left corner of the net, giving Raphael Schafer no chance.

Frank Pagelsdorf's side were in no mood to rest on their one-goal advantage and just two minutes later they stunned Stuttgart with a second goal.

With the visitors' defence napping Brazilian defender Orestes rose highest and headed home from close range.

Veh clearly had some harsh words to say at half-time, as Stuttgart came back into the game after the break.

Serdar Tasci forced a fine reflex save from Stefan Wachter after 61 minutes.

And Gomez set up a tense finale by halving the deficit with 73 minutes on the clock.

Substitute Ciprian Marica was the architect, with his through-ball setting up Gomez, who rounded Wachter before slotting the ball home from a tight angle.

Wachter produced another fine save to deny Gomez with eight minutes remaining and Cacau saw his late effort strike the woodwork, but the home side held on for all three points.

Rostock celebrate their third win on the trot and beat a superior Stuttgart team thanks to a solid defensive performance and outstanding set-pieces.

For coach Armin Veh´s team it means that they lose contact to the upper third of the table. The defeat is also a serious setback for Stuttgart before their match in the Champions League against Barcelona coming Tuesday.

Rathgeb and Orestes on target

Tobias Rathgeb (16) with his first goal of the season put Hansa in front, defender Orestes (17) with his second goal of the season extended their lead. German international Mario Gomez (73) could only reduce the deficit. For the hosts the win means that they move out of the relegation zone.

In front of 19,000 Stuttgart in the beginning controlled the match and had chances to go in front through Cacau (4) and Ludovic Magnin (13). But Hansa - just like in their match at Hertha BSC Berlin four days ago - stayed cool and waited for their chance.

Former Stuttgart player scores

In the 14th minute Enrico Kern missed the target by inches when he curled the ball over the crossbar. Two minutes later his college and former Stuttgart player Rathgeb showed his dead-ball abilities by whacking a free-kick into the angle from 20 meters out thus crowning his excellent performance.

Stuttgart´s defence, lead by their skipper Fernando Meira, revealed a number of frailties. Just before the 2-0 the ball twice went unhindered through their 6-yard-box before Oreste tapped in from close range. In the 35th minute VfB-coach Veh brought on another striker with
Ciprian Marica who replaced Sami Khedira.

Confident Wächter

At the end of the first half the guests stepped up their efforts but both Mario Gomez (43) und Cacau (45) were denied by the excellent Hansa-goalie Stefan Wächter.

In the second half Stuttgart (who rested their midfielder Yildiray Bastürk before their match against Barcelona) pushed for a goal to reduce their deficit but couldn´t overcome the impressive Wächter. Hansa always remained dangerous and even had chances to increase their lead through Marc Stein (55) and sub Benjamin Lense (65).

I expected a higher score than 2-0!

But still, Barca has a lead!
