Leaders Bayern stumble as Leverkusen climb

Written by: AFP

Bayer Leverkusen´s midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta celebrates after scoring against Wolfsburg during their Bundesliga football match in Wolfsburg. Bayer Leverkusen are up to fifth in the table thanks to their 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg.

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayer Leverkusen are up to fifth in the table thanks to their win over VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday while Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich stay top despite their 3-1 humbling at champions VfB Stuttgart.

After their UEFA Cup defeat in midweek at Spartak Moscow, Leverkusen moved up from ninth to fifth with a comfortable 2-1 win at Wolfsburg.

The visitors took the lead when Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta slotted home Stefan Kiessling's pass on 36 minutes before Kiessling bagged one of his own on 52 minutes.

And Wolfsburg were given a consolation goal when German international Manuel Friedrich turned the ball into his own net with 20 minutes left.

Nuremberg sank deeper into the bottom three mire as they were beaten 3-1 at Arminia Bielefeld, who move up to 14th.

The home side had to come from behind after Andreas Wolf headed Nuremberg into an early lead on 43 minutes, before Bielefeld hit back when Rudiger Kauf headed home just after an hour.

Polish striker Artur Wichniarek put his side ahead, before South African striker Sibusiso Zuma sealed the win in injury time to leave Nuremberg five points from safety and third from bottom.

But the shock of the weekend came on Saturday as ten-man Bayern Munich crashed to their first defeat of the season as they were humbled 3-1 by defending Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart.

Two goals by Mario Gomez - scorer of a double in their 4-2 defeat by Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday - and a wonder strike by Turkish international Yildiray Basturk at Stuttgart's Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion meant the leaders were in the shock situation of being 3-0 down at half-time.

Bayern had only conceded four league goals before this game, but they were reduced to ten-men after Brazilian Lucio was shown a red card on 70 minutes before Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni hit a late consolation goal.

This was Bayern's first defeat in any competition this season.

In their defence, this was Munich's second game in less than 48 hours after they drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night.

Werder Bremen are just a point behind Bayern in second-place as Brazilian midfielder Diego struck with two first-half goals as the home side won 4-0 against fourth-placed Karlsruhe.

Hamburg are in third after they drew 1-1 at Schalke 04.

Having struggled earlier in the season, Hansa Rostock are up to 15th as they picked up a much-needed three points after striker Enrico Kern hit a hat-trick in their 3-1 win over bottom-club Energie Cottbus.

Hertha Berlin had Brazilian striker Andre Lima to thank as his goal three minutes from time gave his side a 1-0 win over Hanover at a snow-covered Olympic Stadium as a heavy shower before kick-off made conditions difficult.

Mid-table side Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 at Borussia Dortmund.

On Friday night, VfL Bochum put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three with a 2-0 win over second-from-bottom Duisburg with goals by Canadian defender Daniel Imhof and Danish striker Tommy Bechmann.

German defender Jansen goes under the knife

Written by: AFP

Germany defender Germany defender Marcell Jansen, seen here in October 2007, had an operation to repair the ankle ligaments he damaged training with the national squad.

MUNICH (AFP) - Germany defender Marcell Jansen had an operation on Friday to repair the ankle ligaments he damaged training with the national squad on Thursday.

The Bayern Munich defender, 22, damaged his ankle preparing for Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier against Cyprus on Saturday in Hanover.

He will be out until at least the new year with the Bundesliga set to break for winter on December 15 and Bayern's first game of 2008 is against Hansa Rostock on the weekend of February 1.

Jansen will be in a plaster cast for three weeks and then have intensive physiotherapy for a further three weeks.

The injury ruled him out of Saturday's game against Cyprus as well as Germany's final Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales in Frankfurt next Wednesday.

Germany were the first team to qualify for next year's Euro 2008 tournament in Austria and Switzerland when they drew 0-0 with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last month.

Two of my teams facing off.. I won't be mad if Wolfsburg lose but it would be good for them to beat Bayern..
As for Bayern they have been so poor lately.

Rummenigge: A Win Will Calm Unrest
After a difficult past few weeks, which has seen Bayern’s first league defeat and fan unrest following the AGM, the club are looking for a win on Saturday against Wolfsburg to restore a positive atmosphere at the Allianz Arena.
Quote:

Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is glad that Bundesliga action returns this weekend so that the focus can return to the pitch, rather than off it.

“It’s always better when the focus is on sport. I’m hoping we can win, because winning is the best response to unrest of any sort” he said.

Following apparent criticism of their own fans by manager Uli Hoeneß, Bayern have spent days talking to fans groups over the past few days in an effort to calm any unrest.

“I believe and hope that our fans will get totally behind their team. After all, everyone goes to the ground intending to enjoy themselves. We should all want to support the team, and hopefully cheer them to victory” Rummenigge explained.

“Obviously, we want to stay top of the league and hopefully extend our lead. Our initial target this term is to be top going into the winter break, and we’ll need a win on Saturday for that.”

The Bayern hierarchy are also looking forward to welcoming Felix Magath back to the Allianz Arena. Magath was unceremoniously fired by the Bavarians back in January, being replaced with Ottmar Hitzfeld.

“We had and continue to have a good relationship with Felix, so we’ll greet him as a friend. Nevertheless, we do intend to defeat our friend.

“Wolfsburg have a good team, and in Felix Magath a good coach too. We definitely won’t underestimate them, especially as the away team.”

Bayern Munich v Wolfsburg

Quote:
Former Bayern trainer Felix Magath returns to the Allianz Arena on Saturday with his Wolfsburg side ready to face a Bayern side who have clearly wobbled in their past few games.

Two consecutive goalless draws against Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund were followed in Round 13 by their first defeat of the season 3-1 at the hands of Stuttgart.

Whether this is a good time for Magath’s Wolfsburg to take on his former employees remains to be seen. On the one hand confidence may be lacking and there will be added expectations from the home crowd. But on the other hand, the ‘Wölfe’ may face a Bayern backlash as the star ensemble attempt to return to the sparkling form of the earlier part of the season.

Magath appears relaxed ahead of an emotional return to Munich. As he see things, it won t be the first time he s had to prepare for a game like this.

“You know, I’ve had a lot of these ‘special’ games, because I’ve held training posts at a lot of clubs. I know exactly what it’s like. It’s going be a pleasant challenge for us, because nobody expects a lot from the team, and Bayern will of course be the favourites to win.”

Bayern will be without their influential centre back Lucio who starts his four-match ban following his red card at Stuttgart.

Another busy round of Bundesliga action gets underway this weekend with Bayern Munich going into action just a single point ahead of both Werder Bremen and Hamburg.
