REPUBLIC OF IRELAND'S dream of reaching Euro 2008 is virtually over after they drew with Germany.

Germany duly claimed their place at next summer’s finals, leaving Steve Staunton's men needing a mathematical miracle to join them.

Ireland are now facing the prospect of missing out on playing at a major tournament for the third successive occasion.

They need to win their final two matches against Cyprus and Wales, while hoping the Czech Republic lose their three remaining matches.

Skipper Robbie Keane squandered the best chances and with it went the last realistic hope of qualifying.

The Tottenham striker should have scored when he beat the offside trap in the second half.

But with only Jens Lehmann to beat, the Republic’s all-time leading scorer tamely fluffed his attempted chip from 12 yards into the arms of the veteran keeper.

DANIEL YOU ARE A BLOODY JINX!

Germany used a second string team as they had already qualified. Losing 3-0 at home is terrible, but I like the Czech Republic too and it's good to have two quality teams through to the European Championships.

but frings said after the match that after the first goal came in thier selfesteam went really down so the early goal did also play a role and a greta thing to see the czechs putting the youth in their squad theyve never had a youth squad this good since ages .... fenin and simunek

Germany coach wants big show against Cyprus

Written by: AFP

Germany´s head coach Joachim Loew is insisting on a top-class performance against minnows Cyprus in Hanover on 17 November to wipe out memories of Germany´s Euro 2008 Czech humbling last month.
HANOVER, Germany (AFP) - Germany's head coach Joachim Loew is insisting on a top-class performance against minnows Cyprus in Hanover on Saturday to wipe out memories of Germany's Euro 2008 Czech humbling last month.

The Cypriots have been Group D's over-achievers and drew 1-1 with Germany a year ago in a Euro 2008 qualifier, but the Germans are still smarting from their 3-0 humbling by the Czech Republic on home turf in Munich last month.

Germany qualified with a 0-0 draw against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last month, but Loew inists they finish with a flourish against Cyprus, and then Wales in Frankfurt next Wednesday, to restore some pride.

"We made errors which we have not seen for a long time against the Czech Republic, that is something we still need to talk about, because a performance like that will not be tolerated again," Loew told German sports agency SID.

"We want to finish the two games with wins and then we can take the necessary confidence into our preparations for next summer's European Championships.

"The players have to show good form, not only in the two games, but also in the seven or eight training camps we will have."

Germany unveiled their new strip, which they will wear on Saturday, and has been designed for next summer's European Championships to be held in Austria and Switzerland.

Loew's first-choice goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will win his 50th cap, despite having missed the last 16 games for Arsenal after losing his place at the Premier League side.

Lehmann, 37, hinted this week he is prepared to quit the north London club in a bid to secure regular football and keep his place in the team before Euro 2008.

"I will have a conversation with Jens in the coming days to see what the situation is like at Arsenal," said Loew.

"We had agreed that we would talk about it in more detail at Christmas.

"If he doesn't play at Arsenal, we will talk about the best possibilities for Jens Lehmann.

"Of course, I would prefer if he did play, especially with next year's European Championships."

Striker Oliver Neuville and midfielder Tim Borowski were back in training on Wednesday after being the only ones to sit out training on Tuesday.

Neuville was recovering from playing for his side Borussia Moechengladbach on Monday, while Werder Bremen's Borowski was struggling with flu.

I´ll stay at Arsenal, says Lehmann

Written by: AFP

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, seen here in October 2007, says he will stay with the Premier League side even though he has lost his status as first-choice shot-stopper.

BERLIN (AFP) - Germany's goalkeeper Jens Lehmann said on Friday he will stay with English Premier League side Arsenal, even though he has lost his status as first-choice shot-stopper at the north London club.

"I want to stay with Arsenal until the end of the season," Lehmann told a press conference here head of Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier against Cyprus in Hanover on Saturday.

"I have a responsibility with regard to my family and for my children, even if I were not to regain my place.

"I cannot just leave like that before the season ends," he added.

Lehmann will win his 50th cap against the Cypriots in a meaningless qualifier with Germany already through to next summer's European Championships and Cyprus unable to advance further.

The 38-year-old admitted he has received several offers from other clubs, without giving precise details.

But he again criticised Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who has chosen Spaniard Manuel Almunia instead of the German since mid-August.

"I believe a manager must be honest with his players," said Lehmann.

"During the two talks I had with him about my contract extension he gave me no indication of what he was going to do," said Lehmann, who has been with Arsenal since 2003.

"I would like to be in the head of my manager, but I cannot answer your questions for him," he added in a far more diplomatic stance than his last outburst when he accused Wenger of "humiliating" him.

But Lehmann again disputed whether Almunia is better than him.

"There are situations where you find yourself behind a goalkeeper who is world-class and you have to accept that.

"But I am not in this situation," he added.

German defender Jansen goes under the knife

Written by: AFP

Germany defender Germany defender Marcell Jansen, seen here in October 2007, had an operation to repair the ankle ligaments he damaged training with the national squad.

MUNICH (AFP) - Germany defender Marcell Jansen had an operation on Friday to repair the ankle ligaments he damaged training with the national squad on Thursday.

The Bayern Munich defender, 22, damaged his ankle preparing for Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier against Cyprus on Saturday in Hanover.

He will be out until at least the new year with the Bundesliga set to break for winter on December 15 and Bayern's first game of 2008 is against Hansa Rostock on the weekend of February 1.

Jansen will be in a plaster cast for three weeks and then have intensive physiotherapy for a further three weeks.

The injury ruled him out of Saturday's game against Cyprus as well as Germany's final Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales in Frankfurt next Wednesday.

Germany were the first team to qualify for next year's Euro 2008 tournament in Austria and Switzerland when they drew 0-0 with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last month.
