He is expected to be able to play against the French club, however, after coming through a training session at Melwood on Sunday.
A Liverpool spokesman told the club's website: "Sami has a broken nose but will be available for the second leg of our Champions League qualifier.
"Jamie underwent a series of investigations on Sunday morning which confirmed he has a broken rib and has also developed a pneumothorax.
"He will continue to be monitored on Sunday but at this stage no further treatment will be required."

The club confirmed that Carragher will miss the second leg of Liverpool’s Champions League third qualifying round tie at home to Toulouse tomorrow, when his team start with a 1-0 lead, but he may face a longer layoff. A pneumothorax, caused by an accumulation of air in the pleural cavity, could have been more serious. Carragher was described last night as being “in good spirits”.
Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, will be relieved that Sami Hyypia has been declared fit to face Toulouse after breaking his nose against Sunderland. Central defence is an area where Liverpool’s much-vaunted strength in depth is lacking, which is one reason why Benítez was so disappointed to see Gabriel Heinze, who can operate at left back or in central defence, move from Manchester United to Real Madrid last week.
It is possible that Benítez will intensify his search for reinforcements before the transfer window closes on Friday, having sold Gabriel Paletta, the Argentine defender, to Boca Juniors for an undisclosed fee. As part of the deal, Emiliano Insúa, the 18-year-old left back, turned his loan move to Anfield from Boca into a permanent transfer.

Jamie Carragher has been declared fit for Liverpool's visit to Portsmouth this weekend.

The influential defender has recovered from the broken rib he picked up at Sunderland last month.

Carragher has come through training this week with no ill-effects and Reds boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed the former England international is back in contention for the trip to Fratton Park.

"Carragher has been training normally with the rest of the players who've been here all week," Benitez told the club's official website. "He is okay and I think he will be available this weekend, which is good news for us."

Benitez also revealed that Harry Kewell and Fabio Aurelio are stepping up their comebacks from injury.

Fingers crossed

"Fabio Aurelio is now getting closer to the squad after playing 45 minutes for the reserves. Harry Kewell is also running again and is nearer to fitness," added Benitez.

"Today, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the safe return of all our internationals. It's not going to be easy for us to travel to Portsmouth tomorrow to play without one training session.

"All you can ask the players to do when they return is some running, so it's always a difficult time."

Carragher: Liverpool must start winning

Liverpool must improve their form - beginning with Blackburn tomorrow - if they're to win the league, says Jamie Carragher.

Carragher told The Sun: "We want to be in there fighting with six or seven games to go. We had a great start but we have dipped a bit and it's something we need to sort out.

"The Premier League, without doubt, is the priority.

"A lot of people question the manager on that because we've done well in the Champions League.

"But if you are nowhere in the league at Christmas it becomes the priority, the Champions League, if you're still involved in it.

"But if we're still in the Champions League and fighting for the title in February or March, the evidence will be there if we are prioritising the league more than that."

Liverpool's Carragher admits he couldn't handle rotation

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher he's happy to have avoided being part of manager Rafa Benitez's rotation policy.

"I don't think I'd like it too much if I was getting chopped and changed. Players want to play every week," said Carra.

"Touch wood, I do that and hopefully that will continue."

Liverpool's Carragher has no England regrets

Jamie Carragher insists he has no regrets over his decision to retire from international football.

The Liverpool defender blamed a lack of opportunities as a major reason for quitting the international stage in the summer.

But with McClaren's squad for Friday's friendly with Austria and the Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday having been hit by defensive injuries and suspensions, it was thought Carragher may have had a role to play.

The 29 year old, though, is adamant he has not considered returning to the international fold and is looking forward to Liverpool's next Premier League game away to Newcastle on 24th November.

"No, I've got no regrets," Carragher told Liverpool's official website.

"I'm enjoying it very much. Obviously there's just four or five of us training and that's pretty enjoyable.

"I also get a lot more time at home with the kids, so that's great.

"Hopefully I'll be fresher than most of the lads by the time Newcastle comes around. The whole idea was to help my Liverpool form. Hopefully it's doing that."

Liverpool's Carragher: Reina inside top 3 in world

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Jose Reina is one of the world's top three goalkeepers.

"Pepe (Reina) is the best goalkeeper I have ever played with."

The Spanish stopper has again established himself as one of the top 'keepers in the country this year, keeping seven clean sheets in Liverpool's 12 Premier League games.

Carragher continued: "I've always thought Pepe is a great goalkeeper. I have been here at Liverpool a long time now and he is the best 'keeper I've played with.

"He has beaten some records at this club already and that is testimony to what a top class goalkeeper he is.

"For me he is in the top three in the world. I think Cech, Buffon and Pepe are the best around and you can put them in any order you want, there is not much difference between them.

"It is great as a defender to have a goalkeeper you can trust and who you know you can rely on. I think if we were nervous about the goalkeeper and worried that any mistake you made would end up as a goal, then it would affect your play."

DERBY, England (AFP) - Jamie Carragher has urged his Liverpool team-mates to keep their nerve as Rafa Benitez's side battle to stay in the title race.

Despite defeating Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield at the weekend, Liverpool travel to bottom club Derby on Wednesday still 10 points adrift of leaders Arsenal in the table.

It's another must-win game for Benitez, who faces an even trickier game at Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City next Sunday.

With the midway point of the season looming, long-serving defender Carragher remains confident Liverpool can claw back the deficit, but the former England defender has warned there can be no slip-ups.

"It does not really matter who the leaders are, as long as we keep them in sight," said Carragher.

"At the moment it is Arsenal up there, so we just need to make sure that we keep hold of them for now. I'm sure a time will come this season when they start to find it difficult, especially with all the young players they have in their side.

"There is no secret they are a great side, but I'm sure they will be tested at some point. We just have to make sure we are there to capitalise when it happens.

"I'm sure Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea will keep winning, so it's up to us to prove we can stay with them. It would be really exciting if it's a four-horse race with 10 games to go."

Liverpool now play Derby, Manchester City and Wigan in a week, games they must win if they are not to fall further adrift of the leaders.

"Christmas is always a crucial time of the season," added Carragher. "You can look at this period almost as a separate group of games in that sense.

"From these three games we would always say that seven points would be fine, but nine would be excellent.

"That would make a massive difference heading into the new year, hopefully we can them be a lot close to Arsenal by then."

Benitez can be expected to shuffle his side for the trip to Derby ahead of the tough away trip to fourth-placed City.

Dutch international Ryan Babel, Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin, Fabio Aurelio and Lucas are all in the running for a starting berth. Youngster Jack Hobbs could also get a run-out in defence while Xabi Alonso could continue his comeback from injury.

Derby have won just one of their 18 league games since winning promotion and look certain to make a sorry return to the second tier.

They are seven points adrift of safety despite a creditable 2-2 draw at Newcastle on Sunday.

Striker Kenny Miller, who scored Derby's second goal against Newcastle, believes that result can act as a springboard for the rest of the season.

"We stopped the rot and it is always pleasing to come away with at least a point when you go to a place like Newcastle," said the Scottish international.

"We are making progress. We know if we do the right things and cut out the mistakes then we have got a chance."
