LONDON - A 10-year-old boy suffered leg injuries after he collided with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's car, the BBC reported.

Media reported that the accident happened near the England midfielder's home.

"The Liverpool captain was distressed over the accident and has been in contact with the boy's family to check his progress and plans to visit him in the next couple of days," his spokesman was quoted as saying on the BBC website.

The spokesman added that Gerrard had spoken to police at the scene and had been driving very slowly before the accident when the boy ran out.

Liverpool's Gerrard: You can't axe Barry

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits axing Aston Villa's Gareth Barry from the England starting XI would be harsh.

Barry stepped into the side when Frank Lampard was injured last month and formed an impressive partnership with Gerrard in the Wembley encounters with Russia and Israel.

Chelsea midfielder Lampard is fit again and could return to displace Barry as Gerrard's partnership.

But the Liverpool skipper, who will captain his country in the absence of John Terry against Estonia, said: "Gareth was fantastic in both games and I'm sure he'll feel hard done by if he was dropped. He was man of the match in those two games."

Liverpool's Gerrard handed England captaincy

Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard will captain England against Estonia in John Terry's absence.

With usual captain Terry out of Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier, head coach Steve McClaren has asked Gerrard to take the armband.

Gerrard is hopeful Terry will be fit enough to return against Russia on Wednesday, but is happy to be captain in his absence.

"I think JT's got a bit of a knee problem. Hopefully he'll be able to play on Wednesday," he said live on Sky Sports News.

"The manager has told me I'm skipper. To be captain at the new Wembley will be a special day for myself."

Liverpool boss Benitez eager to pick up Gerrard after England setback

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says he'll speak with captain Steven Gerrard after his disappointing performance for England in midweek.

Gerrard fluffed a sitter that would have put England 2-0 up against Russia and on the way to the Euro 2008 finals.

Liverpool face rivals Everton tomorrow and boss Benitez said: "For sure, I will speak with him and I will see how his mentality is. But I think he will be OK.

"Steven has experience and character. If he has another chance like that, I am sure he will score.

"All the players need help at times but Steven has enough strength of character to pull through."

Liverpool boss Benitez: I'd haul off Gerrard again

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says he won't hesitate to haul Steven Gerrard off again after his controversial decision in Saturday's win at Everton.

"Normally you can understand the reaction because it's a derby and it was special," said Benitez in a press conference broadcast on Sky Sports News.

"Stevie is a key player and I think everything will be the same, in terms of if I need to use him I will use him for sure, and if I need to replace him he knows that it's thinking about the best for the team.

"After talking to him he knows my idea. As a manager you need to make decisions in the moment.

"In this case Lucas Leiva was a big part of the victory, so I think that everything was okay."

Liverpool's Gerrard unsettled by derby hook

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is unsettled after his controversial substitution in Saturday's victory at Everton.

Publicly, Gerrard has accepted his manager, Rafa Benitez's viewpoint, but privately it is believed he is still concerned by the situation.

A source close to the player told PA Sport: "Do you think he is concerned? What do you think?"

It is also believed that when Gerrard handed Jamie Carragher the captain's armband, he was asked "are you injured?"

Liverpool boss Benitez gushing in Gerrard praise

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is delighted with the form of skipper Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard has complained in the past that Benitez rarely offers him praise, but the gaffer gushed yesterday: "Stevie's form has been much better over the past few games and I hope that will continue over the next few.

"He is scoring and lifting the team and everyone knows how important he is to us.

"When he was not playing well, the team were not playing well. Now he is showing his many qualities and you can see the team are playing much better. That tells you what he gives us.

"I would like to give him a rest, because using him for every minute of every game is not the best situation. He is fit now, so it is not a problem. But keeping him fit for the entire season is the concern.

"He must play at the moment, because of injuries and illness, particularly with Xabi Alonso missing. I always feel Stevie is important to us when Xabi is playing. When Xabi is not, he becomes even more important."

Liverpool's Gerrard: Foreigners hurting national cause

Steven Gerrard admits he fears for the long-term future of the England side unless more homegrown talent is allowed to develop and flourish in the Barclays Premier League.

The stand-in England captain is concerned about the bigger picture given the dearth of English talent getting the chance to make an impact in the top flight due to the massive influx of foreign players.

The Liverpool player said: "I am sure the quotas idea won't do any harm. I am sure it will help the national team if that is the case. We want as many homegrown players playing in that league as possible.

"As an England player, we want top players involved in the squad and I am sure the quotas will help.

"I think there is a risk of too many foreign players coming over which will affect our national team eventually - if it is not doing it now.

"I am all for getting good young English players through. It has happened to myself and all the other English players and it is important we keep producing.

"It is pointless having the best league in the world if our national team is going to suffer in the long run."

Gerrard added: "There is a concern that this talent will stop coming through if foreigners do take over our league. We are proud to say we have one of the best leagues in the world.

"The most important thing is we have one of the best national teams as well and that will only happen if we keep producing good young talent like we have done over the years.

"I am all for there being a rule change. Something has got to happen otherwise there will be more and more foreigners and they will take over."

Liverpool's Gerrard: Biggest game of our lives

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard admits he's grateful to Israel for handing England a Euro2008 qualification lifeline.

Steve McClaren's side find their destiny back in their own hands after Israel's shock 2-1 win over Russia in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening.

And the picture became even brighter when group leaders Croatia were beaten 2-0 in Macedonia.

Now a draw will be sufficient against Croatia on Wednesday to ensure England book their place in Austria and Switzerland next summer.

Stand-in England skipper Gerrard said: "We have been given another chance to qualify and that has to motivate every player on Wednesday evening.

"Every player's performance against Croatia has got to show that we have been lucky to be given another opportunity. Everyone must give everything to try and be there next summer.

"If we don't get there it will be so frustrating and we have to make sure we have the right mentality on Wednesday."

Gerrard admitted: "Since we lost the game in Russia it has been difficult to be an England player to be honest.

"To be in a situation where it's been out of our hands, and you are relying on other people, is not a situation you want to be in - and not a situation we should have been in.

"I don't think I've ever been in a situation like this before and I have found it hard but now we've got another opportunity.

"England want to be in the big tournaments and that's where we need to earn the right to be by getting the right result on Wednesday.

"Now we are going to be looking forward to one of the biggest games of our lives."

Gerrard rides to Reds rescue

Written by: AFP

Liverpool´s English midfielder Steven Gerrard celebrates after scoring the winning goal against Derby Count during their English Premiership football match in Derby. Liverpool won 2-1.

DERBY, England (AFP) - Steven Gerrard scored a last-minute winner as Liverpool kept their Premier League title bid alive in dramatic fashion against bottom side Derby County here on Wednesday.

Jay McEveley's first goal of the season, in the 67th minute, looked to have salvaged an unlikely draw for Paul Jewell's battling side after Fernando Torres had opened the scoring in the 12th minute.

But a frantic finish saw Gerrard bundle home the decisive goal from close range after Lewis Price had spilled Torres's initial shot and McEveley had fired his clearance straight to the England international.

The defeat stretched Derby's winless run to 12 games and left Jewell still searching for his first victory since succeeding Billy Davies last month.

Jewell was dealt a blow before kick off when first choice goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was forced to withdraw with a shoulder problem.

Bywater had an injection to numb the pain of the injury he suffered at Newcastle United last time out but felt some discomfort in the warm-up and was replaced by Price, who made his Premiership debut in somewhat daunting circumstances.

Benitez, meanwhile, made four changes from the side that thrashed Portsmouth last weekend, among them being recalls for Xabi Alonso and Ryan Babel while Andriy Voronin partnered leading scorer Torres in attack.

It took Liverpool less than 12 minutes to take the lead with a goal of genuine class.

Derby lost possession in the process of going on the attack and it proved costly when Torres found the ball on the edge of the penalty area.

He nutmegged the helpless Darren Moore with ease before cutting inside Dean Leacock and curling a sublime finish into the far corner.

Babel was the next to threaten on 17 minutes but the Dutch international failed to hit the target having beaten McEveley with ease on the right flank.

Moments later McEveley made amends with a crucial challenge on Torres as the Spaniard was about to double his side's lead from a strong shooting position.

Babel should have made it 2-0 in the 24th minute when John Arne Riise picked him out with an accurate cross but the winger, unmarked at the back post, could only send his volley over the crossbar.

Derby's problems went from bad to worse two minutes later when Stephen Pearson was forced to leave the field with a dislocated shoulder following a collision with Moore.

He was replaced by Michael Johnson, making his first appearance of the season.

Johnson's arrival at the heart of Derby's defence made them look more secure yet Jamie Carragher should still have doubled Liverpool's lead before half time yet shot wide when it seemed easier to hit the target.

While Liverpool's lead remained so slender Derby always had hope of salvaging something and the equaliser finally arrived in the 67th minute and owed as much to good luck as skill.

Eddie Lewis fired a low free kick into a crowded goalmouth and when the ball deflected off Torres to McEveley the defender kept his head to side-foot past Jose Reina and send Pride Park delirious.

Alonso thought he had snatched a late win for the visitors eight minutes from time only to see his curling shot superbly saved by Price, while Gerarrd hammered another shot against the crossbar in the dying minutes before his luck changed for the better at the death.
