Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney will be in the squad to face former club Everton on Saturday.

Rooney returned to training this week after recovering from the broken foot he sustained on the opening day of the season against Reading.

Despite being named in the squad, Ferguson is still unsure if he will unleash Rooney against Everton.

Advice

"I would just assess it [Rooney's fitness] and take medical advice from the doctor," said Ferguson.

"He has trained very well this week. He is a terrific trainer."

Ferguson also revealed Owen Hargreaves is likely to miss out on the trip to Goodison Park as he struggles to shake off a groin problem.

Hargreaves, who missed England's two Euro 2008 qualifiers with the injury, took part in training on Friday, but will likely be rested ahead of next week's UEFA Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon.

Risk

"There's not a lot wrong with Owen," added Ferguson. "He trained well today (Friday). But I don't know whether we'll risk that against Everton. It's more likely he'll play in Lisbon on Wednesday."

Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea both face spells on the sidelines after picking up injuries on international duty.

Fletcher limped out of Scotland's 1-0 win over France with a leg injury and he is expected to be ruled out for up to six weeks.

O'Shea picked up a knee knock in Republic of Ireland's defeat to Czech Republic and the versatile performer faces a couple of weeks on the sidelines.

He already recovered? Is it just me or was it fast?

I want to see Rooney back, no matter what.

Pretty good stats there, they need to win more games.

If we win the next game and Arsenal either loses or draws their next two, we are first!!

Boss hopeful on injuries

Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated that United’s injury situation may not be as bad as first feared despite losing Nemanja Vidic, John O’Shea and Louis Saha through injury against Wigan.

Saha aggravated his knee in the warm-up and was forced to withdraw from the squad after initially being down as a substitute.

Vidic lasted 21 minutes before being replaced by Anderson after receiving a bang to the head, while O’Shea, who temporarily took Vidic’s position in the centre of defence, left the fray eight minutes later with a dead leg.

The additions of Saha, Vidic and O’Shea to United’s seemingly ever-growing injury list, means there are now enough players in the stands to field a complete side. But with the international break now upon us, Sir Alex is hopeful things will be looking up when domestic action resumes on 20 October.

“Louis felt his knee in the warm-up and in Louis’ situation we had to withdraw him unfortunately,” the boss revealed on MUTV.

“Nemanja’s been taken to hospital and he has concussion so they’re giving him some tests. John O’Shea has just got a dead leg. He’ll be OK in a couple of weeks I’m sure.”

The United manager also revealed that both Darren Fletcher and Owen Hargreaves are making good progress with their recovery from leg and knee injuries respectively.

“Hopefully Darren will be back soon,” said Sir Alex. “He starts full training on Monday which is good news.

“I hope Owen Hargreaves will be available in two or three weeks time as well.”

Queiroz considers leaving Man Utd

Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has hinted that he is considering leaving the club.

The 54-year-old is in his second spell as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, having rejoined the club in 2004.

But Queiroz told the Sun: "I need to reflect on what I want to do in this last part of my career.

"In December I'm going to stop and think about myself. My contract is perpetual and caters for various options but I have only one life."

Queiroz was Ferguson's number two from June 2002 until he left to become manager of Real Madrid in June 2003.

However, he was sacked as manager of the Spanish club in May 2004 and returned to Old Trafford in the summer of the same year.

"I am going to think about him and go for the route that makes me most happy," he added.

"I read Sir Alex said that one day he would like me to be United's main coach. That is one reason I am in this project but I'm not desperate about it.

"In your personal and professional life you always have more ambitions."
