Southgate denies Downing demanded Middlesbrough exit

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has denied reports suggesting England international Stewart Downing has asked for a transfer.

It had been reported that Downing had held talks with Southgate about leaving Teesside after growing tired of some fans' booing of him.

However, Southgate hit back at the stories, telling the Evening Gazette: "He's never asked to leave. No way has he been in and asked me to leave - he's not been in to see me about anything.

"I spoke to him after last weekend's game, but that's all.

"All I have expressed to him this week is the belief I have in him as a player, and that he has produced time and time again for us. The stick he has taken, he takes it on the chin.

"His heart is here and he is a young player who has been a terrific talent for us and has got us so many points and scored us so many goals and created so many goals for us - he is a match-winner for us."

Middlesbrough's Wheater: Gaffer staying calm

David Wheater says there's no tea cups being thrown by Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate as they find themselves at the wrong end of the table.

The young centre-half said: "He (Southgate) is a calm fella, but our chairman is a fantastic chairman as well and I do not think he will put the manager under pressure because that's not what we need right now.

"We just need everyone to be geeing us up and getting on our side.

"The press will say he is under pressure if we are not winning games, but we know what he can do and he is a fantastic manager.

"He is a young manager as well and it is only his second season, so I don't think it is fair to criticise him.

"We want to do well for him. Hopefully we can get a few wins for him."

Middlesbrough boss unhappy with AWOL Mido

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is upset with AWOL Egypt striker Mido.

The Mirror says Mido was allowed to go home for a break after suffering a groin injury but he has delayed his return and will miss the relegation crunch with Bolton today.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate has no idea when the £7m signing from Spurs will return.

Middlesbrough chairman: Southgate right man in charge

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson insists he has not lined up a replacement for under-fire manager Gareth Southgate.

Boro have endured a disappointing start to the season and sit 16th in the Premier League after a run of seven games without a win.

Reports have claimed that Paul Jewell is waiting in the wings to take over at The Riverside, but Gibson is standing by the current boss.

"We have played 12 games in the Premier League, not got the results we have wished for and already there is a noise about the continuation of the manager," Gibson told the Mail on Sunday.

"It is a nonsense. There has even been some trash about us having lined up a replacement. We know that's not true and Gareth knows that's not true.

"I've spoken to Jonathan Woodgate and one or two others to tell them it's c***.

"We gave Gareth a five-year contract because he had to be given a chance to develop. If we go 1-0 down at Bolton I will feel horrendous, but it won't shape what we do at the club."

Gibson also revealed that he considered appointing a German manager before naming Southgate as Steve McClaren's successor in the summer of 2006.

He added: "I looked at a German coach. He wanted to bring in a German fitness coach, German masseur, German players. We were going to become Middlesbrough-on-Rhine.

"It didn't feel right. We had all these kids coming through from our academy. An outside manager might not recognise that, but Gareth knew.

"He is a good man, with integrity and fantastic football experience. He will make mistakes as he's inexperienced, but he has the intellect to learn from those mistakes.

"That is why we went for Gareth over more experienced people."

Middlesbrough chairman Gibson praised for sticking with Southgate

Managers' chief John Barnwell has hailed Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson for continuing to back Gareth Southgate after some poor results.

Boro have taken just three of the last 24 Premier League points they have contested and slipped to 17th place in the table after Sunday's 1-1 draw at Bolton.

However, Gibson remains fully behind 37-year-old Southgate, a stance which has won him the approval of League Managers' Association chief executive Barnwell.

Barnwell said: "When Steve Gibson was appointing Gareth, he put a very strong case for the appointment because he had looked at various domestic mangers who did not satisfy his needs, and he had also considered a foreign manager.

"He felt he had a lot of gifted young players on whom they had spent a lot of time and an enormous amount of money to educate them in the Middlesbrough pattern of life.

"He put a very strong case for appointing Gareth as his manager, and having done that, it is no surprise to us that he will not be swayed by the press or public opinion as to his determination to improve Middlesbrough Football Club.

"Whether that be with Gareth Southgate or anybody else, he has a clear vision of how that club should be run.

"During this period of the season when the culling of managers seems to increase considerably, it is extremely refreshing and a reminder to other clubs that you never achieve your aims if you are continually changing the manager."

Middlesbrough boss Southgate: It's up to us

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has warned his players they cannot expect any help from rivals as they seek to drag themselves away from the wrong end of the Barclays Premier League table.

The injury-hit Teessiders fought out a grim 0-0 draw at Bolton on Sunday, to claim a second point in as many weeks.

That could not stop Boro slipping to 17th place and only a further two clear of bottom club Derby.

Southgate remains confident his club's season will take off once the likes of Jonathan Woodgate, Mido, Julio Arca and Robert Huth are fit again - and Emanuel Pogatetz, who returned from a double bout of knee surgery at the weekend, returns to his best.

Southgate said: "You look to pick up points from every fixture you go into - but certainly in the last four of five games we have had, there have been some particularly tough ones in there.

"We are in the situation we are in deservedly, because we have not played well enough or scored enough, we have conceded at the wrong times - any number of reasons.

"We know as a group of players and staff that we have to get ourselves out of that situation - because we are not going to get help from any other club.

"It is down to us."

Mendieta insists no Middlesbrough problems

Gaizka Mendieta insists he has no problem with Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate despite being frozen out at The Riverside.

The former Spain international has not featured for Boro this season with the club indicating they are willing to let him leave.

"My mission is to work each day and fight for a place in the team," Mendieta told skysports.com.

"The coach makes the decision and I accept it like a professional.

"I insist that I have no problems with the coach. I respect his decisions and that is fine with me."

The classy midfielder believes he could still a job for Boro and remains hopeful that he will figure for them this term.

"I believe that I am still able to play for Boro," added Mendieta. "It is my challenge to play in a match in the Premier League.

"In the summer my situation was worse.

"I aspire to be in the starting XI and the season is long."

Mendieta says he is in the dark about his future and that all he is focusing on is regaining his place in the side.

"In the last weeks I have not spoken to the directors about my future," noted Mendieta.

"I saw some rumours in the press about the winter transfer market, but I have signed a deal with Boro and my dream is to play and help the team."

Middlesbrough boss Southgate angry with job rumours

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is angry with the "Chinese whispers" swirling about his job.

He said: "As with every story at the moment that surrounds this football club, there is half an element of truth and half an element that builds momentum through Chinese whispers.

"Everything gathers momentum at this time and with the internet being how it is now, people can print anything without foundation and a story can build up out of nothing."

Talk that chairman Steve Gibson had telephoned senior players to assure them that Southgate's position was safe came after he gave an interview to former England and Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson for his Mail On Sunday column.

Southgate said: "He (Gibson) has not phoned senior players, he was at the training ground and saw them.

"Steve was here last week talking to Bobby Robson and two or three of the senior players were here.

"I know he was cheesed off with one or two articles that have been written and he just wanted to put them straight.

"Sometimes players can wonder if the manager's position is okay because they see other clubs reacting the way they have.

"I can say it to them, but if the chairman says it, then it has more weight."

Middlesbrough boss Southgate: Mido OK by me

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate insists there's no problems with injured striker Mido.

After a short trip home he has been working on Teesside to recover from the groin injury which has sidelined him since the 2-0 home defeat by Chelsea on October 20.

Southgate told the club's official website: "There have been stories about Mido going back to Egypt without permission, which is nonsense.

"He had an injection into his injury and we told him to go home because he had to rest for a week.

"Most things are a bit of truth, a bit of fabrication and a bit of gloss."

Southgate: Boateng part of Middlesbrough plans

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate says George Boateng remains a big part of his plans, despite using him only sparingly this season.

"George has been a terrific servant for the club. Everybody has looked at his situation and assumed that he wouldn't be involved but he still has a big part to play," said Southgate.

"His response to being left out of the side recently has been first class.

"He has still had a real positive influence around the place, his attitude to training has been good and he wants the team to do well."

Middlesbrough boss Southgate: No Johnson guarantees

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has told Adam Johnson his impressive loan spell at Watford will not guarantee him a spot at the Riverside.

The 20-year-old scored five goals during his spell at Vicarage Road as well as being one of the main suppliers of assists to strike duo Marlon King and Darius Henderson.

But despite his sparkling form for the Hornets boss Southgate does not want to put too much pressure on the latest recruit from the Boro production line.

He told the club's official website: "I'm not bringing him back thinking he's going to start turning our season around for us, he's a young player and I don't want to put any pressure on him.

"But Watford and Aidy Boothroyd have been delighted with his contribution and we're very happy with the way they've looked after him.

"We've always known Adam's talent and being away from home will have done him a lot of good. Playing in a physical league was important too, as well as learning the other sides of the game."

Southgate urges calm at Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has called for calm as his team struggles at the wrong end of the table.

"There are any number of clubs that are panicking, making changes and knee-jerk reactions," Southgate told the club's official website. "But to be a successful club long term you have to have foundations in place and we're trying to lay those foundations.

"Unfortunately that's not sexy and it doesn't excite people overnight, but it's the reality of trying to build a football club.

"Some clubs have given managers 12 games to change things, but how you can change any business round in three months is beyond me.

"I'm realistic about where we are, but I also know we're only three points off 12th place. There's lots to work at and improve upon, but we have to maintain a sense of perspective."

Boro's coach Gareth Southgate spoke to the club official website regarding Mido's injury. The manager mentioned that Mido is on his way to full recovery but it will be hard to set a specific date for his come back.
Frustrated Mido wants a speedy return
As EP reported earlier, Mido was sent home to Egypt in a short vacation following his treatment with an injection to help him recover from groin injury. It appears that some British websites spread a rumour that the Egyptian went AWOL (left the club without permission) and such rumour forced the club coach Southgate to issue an explanation.
Southgate stressed that Mido is just frustrated as he came to Boro to play and to score goals but injury is keeping him away from performing his favorite job. Southgate also confirmed that the Egyptian had the cub approval when he went to Egypt in a short vacation.
Regarding Mido's injury, Southgate believes that the Egyptian is working hard to get back to full fitness but it still hard to expect a certain date for his comeback.
"The lad's incredibly frustrated because he's come here to score goals and he feels he's taking one step forward and two steps back," he said.
"We keep getting rumours circulating about his attitude and this, that and the other but he just wants to get on and play.
"I've read some rumours that are incredible really. We live in a world with the Internet where people don't need to have proof before they say things and there's no comeback on them. It's irresponsible and I don't agree with it but we just have to get on with it."

"He's working hard trying to get himself fit," said Southgate. "The injection he had has helped but it's not the sort of thing you can put a time on. "He's had periods where he felt really good and thought he would be ready then the next morning he's had a reaction.
"That's frustrating for us because we know the talent of the lad. He's very frustrated and down about it because he just wants to play football.
"He's big and physical and a target player for us and we don't have another player in the squad who has the same attributes as he has."

Southgate misses Mido

Middlesbrough coach Gareth Southgate said that life is difficult for the Yorkshire club without injury-troubled striker Ahmed Hossam 'Mido'.

The Egypt striker enjoyed a marvelous start with Boro, scoring twice in his first two games, but has not featured since sustaining a groin injury against Chelsea last month.

"Mido is desperate to get out on the pitch and show the fans what he can do," the Boro coach told the Evening Gazette.

"Apart from his first couple of games when he made a big impact, he hasn’t been able to play to the level he is capable of.

"We’ve missed him because we don’t have another player with his attributes. He’s physically big and a target man, so not having him available has made it difficult for us.

"Some other clubs have had the same problem. Wigan have missed Emile Heskey in the same way as we have missed Mido."

Mido faced a similar groin problem in the 2006 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, but Southgate believes the type of injury is a mystery for the 24-year-old.

"It's not the sort of injury in which you can put a return date on it, like ligament damage or a break," added Southgate.

"It seems to be one step forward and two steps back."

The former England center-half has no doubts over Mido's attitude and willingness to be back in action with the Premiership strugglers.

Mido scored his last goal more than a month ago

"The person who most feels the frustration is Mido himself. I have read some things about our players which are incredible," said Southgate.

"The stories about him are from people who don’t know him. People who spread rumors especially through the internet have no proof and face no comeback, but it’s irresponsible.

"We know how hard he’s working and how much he wants to be back on the pitch."

Missing Fresh Air

On the other hand, full-back Luke Young said he 'has faith' in Boro's injury-plagued strikers, who only managed four goals between them so far this season.

"I have total faith in our strikers," said the England defender, who scored Boro's last goal in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on November 3rd.

The former Charlton Athletic captain bemoaned the injury that sidelined Mido, stressing that it has been a major blow for the Teesside outfit.

"Losing Mido has been a big loss. He came in like a breath of fresh air, played really well for a couple of games and got a couple of goals. But he's been out since then, and that’s been really frustrating," added Young.

"You have to start off by being difficult to beat and we've been that to a degree.
"We have to now take that on a stage, we've got to try and win matches.

Boro's coach Gareth Sougate decided to hit out at rumours that circulated lately and linked Shawky with a move out of Boro. It was claimed that Shawky didn't impress his manager but the latter backed his player in an interview with the club official website.

Southgate: Shawky player for the future
Southgate started with explaining why the Egyptian didn't play with the first team yet:
"He's only been here a couple of months and it's been a very difficult period for the team," said Southgate. "I haven't felt it right to put him in yet and he totally understands that.
"He's taken a little while to settle in to the speed of the game. But he's still a very young player and we're trying to slowly bed him in to English football.
The Boro manager added that Shawky is making progress in training:
"We're very pleased with what he's done up to now, we think he's getting stronger and improving all the time.
However, he stressed that Shawky will have to be patient as the club already have many players in his place and this might delay his introducing him to the starting line-up.
"He's just having to be a bit patient because we have a lot of competition for places at the moment in the area of the field he plays in."
Southgate sees Shawky a player for the future and that the Egyptian knows that his chance will come.
"His training is very good, when I've spoken to him about the decision he totally accepts it and wants the team to do well.
"I'm very pleased with what he's done and I've spoken to him at length and explained why he hasn't been involved.

The Boro coach also added that it was hard to introduce new players while the club is on a bad form.
"With the team not doing so well it's hard to throw people into the fray straight away and, as we've seen with the likes of Tuncay and others who come from aboard, it takes people time to adapt.
"He's been in and around the squad for us and we're hoping he can make that step up soon.
"We think he's adjusting very well, he realises that as a strong player in the league he was playing in that doesn't necessarily follow into the Premier League because it's a different style, all the players are fast and the games very intense.
"He can see that in the training sessions and even the reserve games he has played in.
"You can see that he's an intelligent player and he's got qualities. In more recent weeks it's just been a case of George Boateng and Fabio Rochemback have been outstanding and we've got Julio Arca coming back from injury so that area of the field is very strong for us."
"He understands he's here not just for a couple of months but for the longer term and he wants to know all the time what he has to do to get into the side, which is great.
"He's very keen to make a success of his move to England and these things take time.
"He's still a young player, he enjoys living here and wants it to work out and given time we will see a player there."
According to these comments from Southgate, Shwky will remain a Boro player at least this season. The Egyptian will unlikely get involved in games though before the ACN. However, he may get his chance in the 2nd half of season...
