Default Major League Soccer 2008 ~ General Chat & Latest News

2008 Major League Soccer season

The 2008 Major League Soccer season will be the 13th season in league history. The season will begin on March 29, 2008 and will end with MLS Cup 2008, on November 23, 2008 at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles.

Changes from 2007 Season
* San Jose Earthquakes return to play as an expansion franchise in the Western Conference.

* Glidden will become the jersey sponsor for the Columbus Crew.

* Bruce Arena left as coach for the New York Red Bulls. A replacement has yet to be hired.

* Frank Yallop left as head coach for the Los Angeles Galaxy to become head coach for San Jose. In his place, Ruud Gullit, a highly decorated player with teams such as the Dutch national team, PSV Eindhoven, AC Milan, and Chelsea, and coach of teams such as Chelsea and Newcastle, became head coach.

All-Star Game
The 2008 MLS All-Star game will be held at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, home of Toronto FC.

It will mark the first time that the game has been played outside the United States.

National Competition

* 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup

International Competition

* CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2008

Houston Dynamo and DC United have earned berths in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup by virtue of their MLS Cup and Supporters Shield wins.

* CONCACAF Champions' League 2008-9

Houston Dynamo (MLS Cup winner), DC United (Supporters Shield Winner), New England Revolution (MLS Cup runner-up), and Chivas USA (Supporters Shield runner-up) will be the representatives in this newly created tournament, set to replace the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. New England and Chivas will enter in the preliminary stage and need to qualify for group play. Houston and DCU will go straight to group play, which apparently will be four four-team groups.

* 2008 SuperLiga

Houston Dynamo, DC United, New England Revolution, and Chivas USA are scheduled to be MLS's entrants into the 2008 SuperLiga, based on their top-four finish in the 2007 regular season.

* Copa Sudamericana 2008

It is yet to be determined which, if any, MLS teams will participate in this tournament

* Pan-Pacific Championship 2008

A new international competition planned to begin in the pre-season in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The reported plan is to involve the MLS Cup Champion and A-League champion as well as the Yamazaki Nabisco Cup winner of the J-League. Allegedly, the final spot is intended to go to the champion of SuperLiga though Pachuca declined the invitation and the runner-up LA Galaxy will be invited instead.However, other reports have stated that "LA Galaxy are guaranteed their place on an annual basis" indicating that their invitation is not the result of their result in SuperLiga.

Houston Dynamo will qualify for the inaugural Pan-Pacific Championship as the MLS Cup winner and will be joined by the LA Galaxy.

Pre-Season Competition

* 2008 Carolina Challenge Cup

* 2008 Puerto Rico MLS-USL Challenge

* 2008 Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup

* 2008 Saturn Cup

* 2008 Tom Fitzgerald Memorial
