Shearer: Owen happy at Newcastle

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has insisted England striker Michael Owen is happy on Tyneside.

The 27-year-old has once again found himself at the centre of speculation he could leave St James' Park next summer for as little as £6million - Manchester City have once again been linked with him - amid rumours of a bust-up with club boss Sam Allardyce over his fitness.

And Shearer, who played a key role in persuading the former Liverpool and Real Madrid frontman to make his £17million move to St James', has no doubts about his commitment to the black and white shirt.

He said: "He is very happy here. He loves the area - his family is here and his kids are at school.

"He cannot control what has been said, and he cannot come out every week. He's happy, and he should not have to do that.

"He's frustrated, but he's a tough lad. He will handle it, and he will score goals.

"I don't understand where the criticism's coming from. I don't understand how it's such a crime to first of all get back to playing for Newcastle. He came on and scored and did very well.

"He wants to play for England and I don't see the crime in that either."

Newcastle continue Shearer talks over Allardyce job

Alan Shearer is in line to succeed Sam Allardyce - if the Newcastle United manager is offered Steve McClaren's England job.

The Sunday Sun says with McClaren still in danger of the sack, the Magpies are aware that Allardyce will feature on the FA's shortlist of potential replacements.

And, having already met with Shearer in the summer and discussed the prospects of him entering the United dug-out in future years, Newcastle's new regime will offer him the manager's job if Big Sam gets the call of his country.

Newcastle legend Shearer wants England job

Alan Shearer is a shock candidate for the England job.

The People says the former England and Newcastle skipper Shearer has told close friends he would take the job if it is offered - despite having no management experience.

And that's alerted senior FA bosses who are deliberating over which way to go after McClaren's stumbling attempt to qualify for Euro 2008.

Sources close to Shearer claim his move into management is imminent despite having 18 months left on his Match of the Day contract.

The Geordie legend believes he could do the job and would have the respect of the players. Shearer has also spent three years completing the bulk of his coaching qualifications.
