Allardyce savours Beye´s last-gasp winner
Written by: AFP
Beye's dramatic winner capped an impressive fightback from Sam Allardyce's side, who equalised through Obafemi Martins's penalty after Cameron Jerome had put the visitors ahead at St James' Park. It was a much-needed win for Allardyce after a long barren run brought reports that the Newcastle manager was facing the sack. Allardyce's vigourous celebrations at the final whistle showed how much it meant to him to ease the pressure. After the midweek draw against Arsenal, there are signs he is beginning to turn the tide. Birmingham boss Alex McLeish had seen his team win in the last minute against Tottenham last weekend, but this time it was the Scot who was left to rue his luck after a battling display from the Blues. Allardyce kept faith with the team that played so well against Arsenal. But Newcastle had fallen behind early against the Gunners and they were caught out again in the opening stages here. Only nine minutes had gone when David Rozehnal made a hash of clearing Mathew Sadler's long ball and Jerome rounded Shay Given to open the scoring. The momentum generated by Wednesday's match was in danger of dissipating but Newcastle have a new-found resilience and refused to be thrown off course. James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia combined on 18 minutes, although the Frenchman scuffed his shot well wide. N'Zogbia was the provider ten minutes later as his free-kick reached Martins, who drove in a close-range effort that was brilliantly saved by Maik Taylor. Milner cut into the penalty area before shooting wide moments later, then N'Zogbia fired over the bar, but Newcastle didn't have to wait long for an equaliser. Sadler tripped Martins as he chased a loose ball in the box and referee Rob Styles awarded a penalty. Taylor got a hand to Martins's spot-kick but only managed to push the ball onto a post and it rebounded into the net. Newcastle were straight back on the attack as they strove to end their six-match winless run. Milner forced Taylor to tip his shot over and went even closer on the stroke of half-time with a powerful strike that rattled the crossbar. Birmingham midfielder Fabrice Muamba slashed a speculative effort well off-target soon after half-time. Sebastian Larsson was unable to work Given with a low shot as McLeish's side kept up the pressure. Given was in action again when he saved at his near post from Liam Ridgewell and Allardyce opted to send on Turkish midfielder Emre to try to wrestle back the initiative. It was an astute move. Martins forced a save from Taylor two minutes and then Emre laid on the winner in the 90th minute. His corner arrowed in to the near post, where Beye got free to direct his header past Taylor and spark wild celebrations with his first Newcastle goal. |

Cameron Jerome gave the visitors the lead when he collected a long ball from Mathew Sadler, rounded keeper Shay Given and slotted into the empty net.
Obafemi Martins equalised for Newcastle from the spot after he was judged to have been brought down by Sadler. And with seconds remaining, right-back Beye eluded his markers to head in Emre's corner at the near post. The result was unfair on Alex McLeish's side, who for much of the game made Newcastle look distinctly below average - something Arsenal failed to do three days earlier. The home support had been expecting Newcastle to continue where they left off on Wednesday. And for the first few minutes of the first half, Sam Allardyce's men looked calm and strung together some good passing moves without really hurting Birmingham's defence. The problem was the Magpies were relaxed to the point of being horizontal and that was exploited by Jerome. The hard-working striker pounced on Sadler's raking pass, shook off a powderpuff challenge from David Rozehnal and coolly slotted past the onrushing Given. That goal failed to wake Newcastle from their slumber and they kept needlessly giving the ball away in an effort to find forwards Alan Smith and Martins. Birmingham, on the other hand, looked calm but also alert, with Liam Ridgewell and Brazilian Rafael Schmitz particularly impressive at the back. Gary McSheffrey and Daniel de Ridder were doing their utmost to win the ball for the potent Jerome and Alex McLeish's men looked to have sussed everything Newcastle had to offer. That was until the 30th minute when striker Mark Viduka replaced the struggling Nicky Butt. Viduka did not directly contribute to the equaliser but his presence in the area created space for Martins who was sent tumbling to floor by Sadler's trailing leg. The Nigerian dusted himself off to fire in the resulting spot-kick off Maik Taylor's left-hand upright. That gave the home support and the team a filip and Milner had two chances to put Newcastle into the lead, first with a header tipped over by Taylor followed by 20-yard shot which rebounded off the crossbar. At the other end, Jerome turned centre-back Taylor but had his poked shot saved by Given low down. Jerome's pace caused confusion again in the second half when a long ball caught out centre-back Rozehnal once more before he was bailed out by team-mate Taylor. McLeish brought on Mikael Forssell in a surprise yet positive move as Birmingham looked to go for a win, while Newcastle appeared devoid of ideas to break down the Blues' stubborn resistance. Unfortunately for the battling visitors, they ended up with nothing when Beye sneaked in at the near post to head in substitute Emre's inswinging corner. It was Newcastle's first win in seven games but they will have to play better in order to extend their two-game unbeaten run, while Birmingham can build on what was a superb display in the north-east. |

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce:
"It is a really, really big three points. Nothing else really mattered today but three points, and we got them. "We have worked very, very hard over the last seven days - Blackburn and then Arsenal and now Birmingham - and now finally got what we deserved. "Birmingham, for us, is a winnable game. It would have been a huge disappointment had we not won this game today. I would have had to say 'this is not good enough'. "As spirited and good a performance as Birmingham put up today, by the amount of dominance we showed in the first half - even though we did play a game in midweek and they did not - we should have put those chances away and put it beyond Birmingham." |

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish:
"We were comfortable and they got a penalty which gave them momentum and we're aggrieved at the decision. "But there are a lot of things to take forward to next week. "The decisions went more in Newcastle's favour than ours. They had a lot of territorial advantage but did not really look like hurting us." |

Habib Beye chose the perfect moment to claim his first Newcastle United goal as the Magpies struck at the death to end their seven-game wait for a Barclays Premier League win.
The Senegal international headed substitute Emre's 90th-minute corner past Maik Taylor to snatch all three points as the Magpies completed a gritty fightback. Cameron Jerome had given Birmingham City a shock lead when he went round Shay Given to score with just nine minutes gone. Sam Allardyce's men took their time to get going, but they levelled on 36 minutes when Obafemi Martins converted a penalty after being tripped by Mathew Sadler. James Milner rattled the crossbar four minutes before the break as Newcastle threatened to overwhelm the visitors. However, Taylor twice saved from Martins, the second six minutes from time, and once from Milner, and the home side had to wait until the dying seconds to take all three points. |

finally broke
Newcastle went a goal down after nine minutes when defender Rafael Schmitz's long ball forward was little more than hopeful, David Rozehnal allowed Jerome to outstrip him before rounding keeper Given and shooting into the empty net. The hosts were unfortunate not to be back on level terms on 27 minutes when Martins met Charles N'Zogbia's dipping free-kick just two yards out, but saw Taylor pull off a fine reaction save. Nicky Butt's departure through injury 14 minutes before the break brought Mark Viduka on to the field, and his side finally broke through five minutes later. Martins set off to chase a loose ball inside the penalty area and was tripped by Sadler, and referee Rob Styles pointed straight to the spot. The Nigeria international stroked the ball low to Taylor's left, and although the keeper got a hand to it, it went in off the post to level the scores. Jerome saw a shot on the turn saved by Given on 39 minutes as City briefly rallied, but it was the Magpies who finished the half with the wind in their sails. |

"We are very relieved to win because this was a difficult game against a team playing for a new manager. The character and the fitness of the players came through with us getting a goal in the last minute."
