British newspapers are predicting that Babayaro has played his last game for Newcastle. | | NEWCASTLE, England (AFP) - Celestine Babayaro has played his last game for Newcastle United, newspapers reported here Monday. The 29-year-old defender and the Premier League club have reached an agreement to pay the remaining months of his contract, which expires at the end of the season. Nigeria international Babayaro has not played for United since the 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on March 31 through a succession of hamstring and back problems as well as a lack of form. As a result Sam Allardyce, who replaced Glenn Roeder as Newcastle manager at the end of last season, has had to field winger Charles N'Zogbia at left back for much of the current campaign with Jose Enrique, a pre-season signing, still adjusting to English football. Babayaro, who played Champions League football for Anderlecht as a teenager, arrived at St James' Park in January 2005 in a one million pounds (two million dollars) move from Chelsea as then manager Graeme Souness looked to strengthen Newcastle's defence. But Babayaro was rarely able to produce his best form on a consistent basis. However, he won praise from Newcastle's fans in February when he played in the 2-1 league win over Liverpool, after which Roeder revealed Babayaro's younger brother David had died just hours earlier. |
