MICHAEL OWEN’S rift with Sam Allardyce deepened yesterday when the England striker refused to apologise to his Toon boss.

Owen denies he is gambling with his Newcastle career by rushing back from a major op to play for England against Estonia on Saturday.

In a clear message to Allardyce, defiant Owen said: “I’m not going to apologise for wanting to play for England.”

Owen also insisted he WAS ready to start for Newcastle against Everton on Sunday — but it was Allardyce’s choice to make him a sub.

Owen, 27, said: “Being on the bench was the manager’s decision. It was a decision I respected but I was definitely available to start.”

Allardyce last week expressed concern about Owen rushing back too quickly after a double hernia op.

But Owen said: “If anything I’ve always pushed, even when I have been hurt, to play for my club, my country.

“Your career is so short and I’m hungry to play in any game and score any goal. So to get labelled as someone who’s ‘Just trying to do this to play for England’ is wrong.”

Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright -Phillips are available after injury for Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley.

And Owen clearly feels he has been singled out unfairly.

He said: “Looking at other examples, Shaun had a hamstring injury, not played for a couple of games and he is fit for England.”

The Sun revealed tensions between Owen and Allardyce have simmered for nearly two years. But Owen said: “I have no problems with the manager.”

SHOLA AMEOBI insists nothing will stop his pal Michael Owen playing for England against Estonia.

The Newcastle striker revealed his Toon team-mate is over his injury problems and is desperate to fire his country into Euro 2008.

Ameobi, 25, said: “Michael’s fine now he’s back and is always keen to play in as many games as possible for England.

“I am sure he’ll want to play in these games and score goals for his country.

“That’s what he has done for the last 10 years and he’ll want to do the same to make sure England get through to Euro 2008.”

Ameobi knows the pain Owen has been through after spending most of last season in the Magpies’ treatment room alongside the England star.

He added: “I really respect Michael for what he has done and what he has been through.

“He has been unfortunate with injuries of late so it’s great to see him back for Newcastle.

“Hopefully, he can put it all behind him and start scoring goals on a regular basis again.

“He is a world-class striker and he proved that with his goal at the weekend.”

Ameobi hopes to return to action himself from a groin strain against Tottenham on October 22.

Newcastle's Owen angry with England row

Newcastle striker Michael Owen insists he's not putting England ahead of his club career.

"People who label me as someone who is just trying to do this or that are wrong," he argued. "I have always pushed myself. I have played when I have been hurt for club and country. My career is short, so I am hungry to play every game and score every goal.

"I just cannot fathom the way things have snowballed. I thought people would think it was fantastic that I had got back in eight days. I thought they would be talking about how I had gone through the pain barrier to get back so quickly.

"Instead, it has been turned into a negative. Maybe the speed of my recovery has contributed to people thinking it cannot be right.

"If I was only interested in playing for England, I would not have bust a gut to get myself fit and be available for Sunday."

Although a succession of injuries have restricted Owen to just 17 starts for Newcastle so far, nine goals emphasise his value to manager Sam Allardyce.

Yet, he still cannot understand why such a fuss is being made of his presence with the England squad when other players' international commitments are not being questioned at all.

"It was the manager's decision to put me on the bench on Sunday but I was definitely up for starting," he said.

"I look around for other examples and I see Shaun Wright-Phillips. He has missed a couple of games with a hamstring injury but he is fit for England. And I saw John Toshack talking about Craig Bellamy possibly being available for Wales' game next Wednesday. He has had the same injury as me but no-one seems to be mentioning that.

"I would play in any game, for Newcastle or England, and I thought pushing myself to get back on Sunday the way I did would have dispelled any thoughts that I was just trying to get myself right for England.

"I know I am under the spotlight but it has got to be fair."

BOBBY CHARLTON insists he will be happy to hand over the record of England’s leading scorer to Michael Owen.

The Manchester United legend notched 49 times for his country during his 106-cap career.

But Owen, 27, has now got 40 to his name and will be looking to close the gap even further in the two games over the next week.

And Sir Bobby is full of admiration for what Owen has achieved for the Three Lions since he burst onto the scene nine years ago.

He said: “Just now Michael is certain to beat my record as long as he keeps fit and does not get any injuries and that pleases me immensely because he’s a great little player.

“He’s a proven goalscorer and is sure to score more England goals than me and I certainly have no grudge as he’s a superb striker.”

Charlton is also impressed by Owen’s comeback from cruciate knee damage sustained last year.

Sir Bobby added: “I admire anyone who has bounced back from a career-threatening injury.

“I never had a serious injury so I don’t know what it’s like but it must have been lousy.

“And I’m pleased he is working very hard and making the England team tick again.”

MICHAEL OWEN has made a career from shooting with his feet.

Yesterday, however, he showed he can be just as sharp with his tongue.

Angered by accusations that he is more interested in England than Newcastle, strike star Owen came out with all guns blazing.

He rubbished suggestions that he was risking his fitness for his club by playing for his country.

And he insisted he will always put his body on the line — no matter what shirt he is wearing.

Owen, 27, fumed: “If anything, I’ve always pushed — even when I have been hurt — to play for my club or my country. Your career is so short and I’m hungry to play in any game and score any goal. That’s the case with me.”

The Newcastle forward is clearly hurt by the whispering campaign which has questioned his motives for a return to playing so soon after a double hernia op.

It took him just eight days to go from operating theatre to the pitch at St James’ Park last Sunday.

He explained in detail his recovery and his frustration that it should be seen as negative — especially as he scored the winning goal for the Magpies against Everton.

Owen said: “The injury is no longer. I flew over a week last Thursday, had the operation on Friday. Went home on Saturday morning. Walking on Sunday, jogging on Monday.

“I did everything — sprints, blasting balls — on Thursday, trained Friday and Saturday with the team and was obviously available for Sunday.

“By Thursday the injury was obviously fine, I could continue playing just like the surgeon said I would be able to. I was available.

“The manager could have started me but he put me on the bench. I came on, played quarter of an hour. I’m fit.

“I can’t fathom any of it out, really. Sky TV even went to the lengths of going out to Germany to interview the surgeon. She said on TV exactly what has happened. Somewhere along the line, people have gone the opposite way, questioning the surgeon.

“It is strange that people ask the questions when you have a specialist who has done thousands and thousands of operations who is saying I could be back in a matter of a few days.

“If it was not the case I would not have pushed myself as hard as I did to be available for selection on Sunday.

“Considering I pushed myself to play in a record time for Newcastle that should dispel any doubts that I was just getting myself right for England.

“Everyone knows I will burst a gut to play in any game, for Newcastle or England.

“I am just disappointed with the way things have snowballed in a certain way. I thought people would say how has he got back in eight days, that’s fantastic. They’d be talking about how I’d gone through the pain barrier to get back so quickly.

“But people have turned it into a negative, saying ‘you’ve only done it for England’. You can’t ever win.”

Owen is used to it. He recalled a story from his Liverpool days when the Anfield faithful failed to adopt him straight away and the way Jamie Carragher explained it.

Owen added: “The label has carried with me since I was at Liverpool.

“It was then that I scored a goal for England in the World Cup in 98 and it was at such an early age.

“At the time Liverpool were coming fourth or fifth in the league and my room-mate was Jamie Carragher. His family are all Liverpool or Everton fans, in the thick of things in the city.

I'LL B OK ... Owen returns for England in the
B clash against Albania at Burnley in May
“He said then, ‘It’s because you made your name with England, people associate you with England. Until you win something with Liverpool, they will think you are England’s player as opposed to Liverpool’s’.

“That label has probably stuck with me through my career and that’s unfortunate.

“Until we won the Treble at Liverpool — then I definitely had a warmth from the fans.”

The England fans who pack Wembley on Saturday for the Euro 2008 Group E showdown will give Owen a hero’s welcome — especially after his scoring feats in the last two qualifiers.

Against Russia last month, he hit the magic 40 mark in terms of goals for his country. Yet he insists he is not yet thinking of closing in on Bobby Charlton’s all-time record of 49 for the Three Lions.

The Toon hitman said: “It’s in the back of my mind but not the forefront.

“The forefront is qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals next summer.”

A trip to Switzerland and Austria would go some way to making up for lost time after his disastrous World Cup last year — when he was carried off during England’s final group match, against Sweden.

He added: “I sat back and watched the first half of the qualifying campaign with itchy feet and a brace around my knee and I’ve been wanting to get out there. It’s great to play.”

England and Newcastle should be thankful.

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON will plead with his board to sign Michael Owen in January.

The Newcastle striker has been rowing with boss Sam Allardyce about whether he is fit to play two games for England in four days after recent operations.

Manchester City manager Eriksson hopes to capitalise on the unrest with a bid but Owen’s fee could be a whopping £15million plus £110,000-a-week wages.

That could be too much cash for former England boss Eriksson, even though he has been told by owner Thaksin Shinawatra there will be cash available in January.

Owen, 27, has failed to settle on Tyneside and the fans have never truly taken to him.

They feel he would have rather returned to Liverpool or signed with another big English club when he joined Toon for £16m from Real Madrid in 2005.

But Newcastle were the only ones prepared to take the gamble.

The perception in the North East is Owen loves his country more than his club, having made just 17 starts for the Geordies.

Owen was also slow to pledge his commitment to Newcastle when it was revealed he could leave last summer due to an £11m get-out clause in his contract — which has since expired.

He was booed when he came on in the 3-2 win over Everton last weekend — and cocked an ear towards the fans when he scored.

A move to City may not be his ideal choice but Manchester United refused the chance to sign him in the summer.

United are unlikely to change their minds — and the same goes for Liverpool.

During his time as England boss, Eriksson told a fake sheik in a newspaper sting that Owen was not happy at Toon. But both men will forget the matter if it suits their purposes.

If the hitman moves to City, Allardyce will raid former club Bolton for Nicolas Anelka.

Shearer: Owen happy at Newcastle

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has insisted England striker Michael Owen is happy on Tyneside.

The 27-year-old has once again found himself at the centre of speculation he could leave St James' Park next summer for as little as £6million - Manchester City have once again been linked with him - amid rumours of a bust-up with club boss Sam Allardyce over his fitness.

And Shearer, who played a key role in persuading the former Liverpool and Real Madrid frontman to make his £17million move to St James', has no doubts about his commitment to the black and white shirt.

He said: "He is very happy here. He loves the area - his family is here and his kids are at school.

"He cannot control what has been said, and he cannot come out every week. He's happy, and he should not have to do that.

"He's frustrated, but he's a tough lad. He will handle it, and he will score goals.

"I don't understand where the criticism's coming from. I don't understand how it's such a crime to first of all get back to playing for Newcastle. He came on and scored and did very well.

"He wants to play for England and I don't see the crime in that either."

Allardyce admits Newcastle defensive concern

Sam Allardyce is worried Newcastle's traditional defensive problems may see his first campaign at St James' Park deemed a failure.

Five away games have yielded just one win, and three defeats, with Newcastle's backline failing to keep a clean sheet in the process.

And it is a situation that is clearly worrying the former Bolton chief.

"We are still conceding too many goals, especially away from home," he said in the Northern Echo.

"That's my main area of concern. We have not kept a single clean sheet away from home.

"It did not matter at Bolton on the opening day because we scored three goals and won the game but we can't afford to keep doing that.

"The Man City game was the perfect example. We could not hold on to draw, even though we went a goal up. We have to play a bit tighter when we are a goal up.

"It's been a problem for Newcastle teams in the past. It's something we have to get right if we are going to be successful."

Robinson ruled out for Spurs clash with Newcastle

Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson is out of Monday's clash with Newcastle United with a calf strain.

Opinion has been divided over whether Robinson was at fault for Roman Pavlyuchenko's winner at the Luzhniki Stadium, with defeat leaving Steve McClaren's side on the brink of failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

Spurs boss Martin Jol has stuck by the 28-year-old this season following a series of mistakes - but because of his injury, Robinson will be replaced by Radek Cerny on Monday in the Barclays Premier League clash against Newcastle.

"Paul was assessed, and it showed that he had picked up a calf strain while on England duty that will prevent him playing for us on Monday," confirmed the Dutchman.

Jol added: "Paul is playing for us - and when he played for England he always did well.

"They were very satisfied with him - otherwise he would not be number one because at international level you can pick five, six or seven England goalkeepers.

"I'm a realistic man - you can come up with all the criticisms, and it's not my business. I want to focus on the Newcastle match."

Spurs striker Bent fit for Newcastle clash

Tottenham striker Darren Bent is confident of being fit for Monday's clash with Newcastle - after missing the game against Liverpool.

"I woke in the morning with a headache and a high temperature," Bent told the Spurs website. "The doctor told me I had a chest infection and couldn't play so I came straight home and luckily enough we have had the two weeks off with the international break and feel a lot better now.

"It wasn't nice, I wasn't sleeping too well and I didn't leave the house much in the following days. I'm getting over it now, still a bit bunged up, but as far as physical fitness goes I feel great."

Newcastle boss Allardyce: Owen OK

Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce was relieved to see Michael Owen come through international week unscathed.

Back on Tyneside, Allardyce was taking the view that no news is good news ahead of Monday night's Barclays Premier League clash with Tottenham at St James' Park.

He said: "I have not had a call, so it sounds like he's okay."

Newcastle boss Allardyce delighted with Martins' Nigeria goals

Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce was delighted to hear of Obafemi Martins' two goals for Nigeria in their friendly victory over Mexico this week.

Allardyce's decision to withdraw the former Inter Milan striker against Everton to send Michael Owen on was greeted by boos, and he may now have to choose between the two for the visit of Spurs.

The manager said: "It was great to see Oba score two goals in Mexico.

"Obviously the long trip to Central America was my main concern for him.

"He will be delighted to get two goals, but after trailing all of the way to Mexico and back, I am just glad he didn't have a game in midweek and it was over by the weekend.

"Scoring two will give him a lot of confidence because he missed a couple in recent games.

"Hopefully it will help him to improve that area of his game and his ratio of chances and goals increases. He would then be a major force in the Premier League."

Newcastle boss Allardyce: Barton temperament just like Keane

Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce is confident of getting the best from Joey Barton.

Barton will be on the bench for Monday's clash with Tottenham and Allardyce told The Times: "He is almost a nuisance, but the right sort of nuisance, if you see what I mean. He is training 24/7 and he is always bothering and pestering the staff about what else can he do to maintain his fitness and improve his chances of coming back as quickly as he can. He is actually so into getting back into football that he persists in badgering the staff."

The midfield player has also been cajoling his new teammates, attending away fixtures even when hampered by crutches. "While being hugely frustrated, he has also been chirpy as hell," Allardyce said. "He has shown tremendous commitment, especially in his support for the rest of the team. That builds a really good spirit - you only have to look at the England rugby team to see what that means."

Allardyce also revealed he is using the example of Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's handling of Roy Keane to man-manage Barton.

"Like every top actor, every very top player has standards at this level which affects them and, for whatever reason, they can lose control. Occasionally, in his younger days, that is where there has been a problem.

"But I think he has taken a lot of advice and spoken to a lot of people about it and is moving along the right way in that area. You cannot take the devil out of top players too much. Sir Alex [Ferguson, the Manchester United manager] used to talk about Roy Keane in that way. He was just as volatile as Joey Barton, if not more. You are hoping, with years of maturity, he gets over that."

Newcastle owner Ashley linked with Tottenham takeover

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is planning a stunning takeover bid of Tottenham.

The Sun says Paul Kemsley is ready to launch a bid for Tottenham with Ashley.

Multi-millionaire property developer Kemsley quit as Spurs vice-chairman this week after being blamed for the Juande Ramos fiasco.

Old friends Ashley and Kemsley are currently working together on a project to build a casino in Las Vegas.

And while billionaire Ashley bought a controlling interest in Toon in June, he is a lifelong Tottenham fan.
